For years, my mornings looked the same, wake up early, start my “mom routine,” make breakfast for the household, and get my son ready for school. I did this for 13 years straight. And while it worked for a while, eventually I realized something was missing.

Ornate brass key on stone heart with ribbon, lying on mossy ground. Heart has faintly inscribed text, evoking a vintage, romantic mood.

It reminded me of that airline safety announcement, when the flight attendant tells you to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. As mothers, caregivers, and professionals, we so often forget that lesson. We pour into everyone else before filling ourselves up.

Right before the pandemic, I decided to flip the script. I started small. Each morning, I wrote down 10 things I was grateful for. Then I added 10 “attractions,” things I wanted to invite more of into my life. Over time, I layered in prayer, which deepened my faith and set my mindset.

I also changed my workout routine. Instead of waiting until after school drop off (when it cut into my workday), I began waking up at 4:30 a.m. to pray, write my gratitudes and attractions, and head to the gym. By the time my son woke up, I had already filled my cup, spiritually, mentally, and physically, before putting on my “mom hat.”

It wasn’t easy at first. But like any habit, consistency turned it into a natural rhythm. And the payoff was huge. I started my days with positivity, focus, and energy. It made me more present with my family, more effective in my work, and more joyful in daily life.

Your morning routine doesn’t have to look like mine. It could be meditation, journaling, stretching, or simply enjoying coffee in silence. What matters is intention. When you choose to begin your day with practices that ground you, you show up for others as your best self.

So I’ll leave you with this question. What small changes can you make in your mornings to bring more joy, clarity, and resilience into your life?
