In my previous article, I shared how my e-commerce business transformed my life, providing the environment, flexibility, and purpose I needed to thrive despite the challenges of bipolar disorder and PTSD. By focusing on my strengths and circumnavigating my shortcomings, I was able to build a successful e-commerce company specializing in music memorabilia. However, while passion drove me to start, it is only through technical prowess and a well-planned system that I was able to build a sustainable venture. “Dynamo Dan’s Music Market” is built not only from love but also from practicality and profit. If the first article was about the 'Why,' this is the 'How', the particulars that keep the market running smoothly even when my mental health isn't.

Design a flexible blueprint

Before I began my e-commerce journey, I thought about the entire process of how to acquire, store, present, preserve, and ship products to consumers. I thought about every small step in the process, and over time, fine-tuned every micro-process to create an efficient, profitable business. As I designed a better system and became more knowledgeable about how to handle potential problems, the job became more predictable, enjoyable, and started to become a life-fulfillment amplifier. Better planning beforehand helped prevent future headaches and improved my stress load and mental health. As I began selling items, I continually thought of ways to improve the business, thinking of every misstep as a potential improvement in the future, making “Dynamo Dan’s Music Market” a work in progress that is continually updating and improving. Learning from every improvement and misstep, I eventually started to design an elaborate system to help my business function even when my mental health isn’t.

Building guardrails within a bulletproof system

Managing a business with PTSD and bipolar disorder has its own set of unique obstacles. To best circumnavigate these obstacles, I built a bulletproof system to help me manage my business when my executive functions and mental health were affected. By designing a system and a set of standard operating procedures, I was able to make the job more predictable and understand how to handle every problem that arose. I built this system so that I could act accordingly, even when my thinking and judgment were clouded by emotions and triggers. This system I designed is flexible and a constant work in progress, but these guardrails help me to manage the store better and maintain better control.

What to sell?

When I first started selling online, my mind was naturally drawn toward what I love most. Music has been a lifelong passion, calming my nerves in the roughest of PTSD and bipolar storms and nurturing me when I was most vulnerable. Choosing to sell music-related items wasn't just an obvious choice, it was a practical engineering of my career to align with my deepest interests. There are many music-related items I could have sold on eBay, and after much thought, research, and trial, I decided upon specializing in vintage concert tickets and sealed vintage audio CDs. Audio CDs, particularly sealed ones, have a surging user base that blends nostalgia and a desire to own physical media. The product is specifically desirable among the Gen Z generation, which is tired of streaming services and the revolving catalog of songs on its platform. Likewise, vintage concert tickets are exploding in demand, as they are no longer made in the age of digital technology, where QR codes have replaced the paper ticket. Furthermore, behind each ticket, there is a “story” to be told, representing a unique point in history, whether it be a sold-out crowd, a noteworthy performance, or a canceled event. Through marketing, technology, and advertising, it is possible to unveil this story to potential customers, who might want a deeper understanding of the history behind their product. As I’ll discuss later, leveraging AI has become my primary tool for unearthing these historical narratives.

Acquiring the product

Once I decided upon the products I would specialize in, I networked with various wholesalers and online sellers, building a rapport and symbiotic relationship with them. I would buy large collections of audio CDs, sometimes numbering in the tens of thousands, from major wholesalers in warehouses and move them in U-Haul trucks to my business location to be later resold through my online eBay store. With vintage concert tickets, I would mostly network online and have the items mailed to me, given their lesser weight. Buying in bulk from major wholesalers gets you a better price, and the massive amount of products you buy is less likely to be carefully sifted through, increasing the probability that you will find the occasional high-value gems. As you acquire products from sellers, you will learn which sellers are honest, reliable, and offer the best value for your money. Think of every misstep as part of the learning process to help give yourself a positive outlook. If working with a certain seller isn’t working out, find someone else, be flexible, and remember that it is OK to walk away. If you aren’t getting the results you want, work on refining your technique, making the system more efficient, and building your reputation as an honest, reliable seller.

Storing your products

Having acquired a large amount of audio CDs and vintage tickets, I needed to effectively store them in a temperature-friendly, dry, and safe environment where they wouldn’t be damaged prior to shipment. It is possible that some of your products will remain in storage for years, and it is imperative that your products aren’t damaged prior to shipment to avoid “negative feedback” from customers that can damage your reputation. If any of your items arrive damaged or are damaged in storage, you should discard them to provide better service and improve your reputation as a seller of quality goods. Make sure you are providing the best quality service to reduce stressors like complaints, returns, and eBay policy violations that can increase your stress and damage your mental health.

Presenting your product

As an e-commerce business, my primary vessel for presenting the item to customers is through my online eBay store in the form of “eBay listings.” Each listing on eBay should contain quality photos, a thoughtful title, and a useful description that describes the title. The speed and quality at which you are able to list eBay products is a critical factor in creating a successful eBay store. To do this effectively, you need to utilize the latest technology and best equipment. To do so, I invested in a document camera that takes quick, high-resolution snapshots of smaller items (like CDs and vintage ticket stubs) for my eBay listings. This makes your store look more professional and makes your items more appealing to potential customers who are perusing your products. Make sure to take quality photos with proper lighting that are properly cropped for eye appeal. Each eBay listing needs a quality title and description of the item, and it can be very mentally exhausting and time-consuming writing titles and descriptions for thousands of items. To make this process quicker and less mentally cumbersome, I utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to research items, devise titles, and write thoughtful descriptions. This speeds up the process of listing eBay items, increases the quality of the descriptions, and makes the work less mentally exhausting. Additionally, by utilizing AI, I am able to unlock the historical significance of each ticket and other interesting facts that the buyers might find interesting. AI can quickly research each ticket and explain any significant events that happened during the concert, what tour the performance was part of, what members were present, and other details that purchasers might be interested in. By combining a quality photo with a well-laid-out title and description, I was able to increase my sales, appease buyers, and handle fewer complaints. Furthermore, I took pride in knowing that I was providing a quality service to my customers, who were likely to purchase from my store in the future.

Shipping your products

Once my store was running, I started to receive a steady stream of orders that needed to be shipped to customers. I thought carefully about the products I was shipping and how to package them. The two products I specialize in are vintage concert tickets and sealed audio CDs, and I needed a cost-effective way to package them so they would arrive undamaged. For lower-value CDs, I shipped them through padded envelopes, and for vintage tickets, I decided upon shipping them in plastic top loaders and standard envelopes. By utilizing effective and safe shipping methods, I was able to ensure the item was received undamaged by the customer, reducing the number of refunds and stressful complaints. Shipping vintage concert tickets in top loaders also helps with the overall presentation of the item and helps the customer preserve their item for further enjoyment in the future. The positive customer experience is also reflected through the emails and feedback I receive, thanking me for the quality service and goods, which inspires me and helps me connect with my customers on a deeper level. Even the complaints I receive, though they can be stressful, still allow me to understand the weaknesses of my business and adapt to provide better service in the future.

Dealing with complaints

Working with dissatisfied customers can be difficult for someone with PTSD and bipolar disorder, triggering symptoms that can damage your mental health and potentially your business. To best handle complaints, I devised a system to help remove some of the stress and ambiguity from the situation. I offer an immediate solution to customers that involves either a refund or replacement for the item without being drawn into a heated conversation. Knowing what to do beforehand helps me remove some of the emotional aspects of the situation and helps me focus on providing quality service and managing other less stressful aspects of my business.

Manufacture your ideal business

By creating a system that circumnavigates my weaknesses and amplifies my strengths, I have been able to build a successful business that bypasses my PTSD and bipolar symptoms. This self-designed system allows me to “autopilot” when my mental health has been affected, enabling me to handle complaints better, be more efficient, and understand how to handle every problem that arises. Molding a business to meet my personal specifications and unique needs has allowed me to escape the rigidness of the 9-to-5 workweek and given me the flexibility needed to succeed. Ready to delve into your own personal business venture? By harnessing your strengths and circumnavigating your weaknesses, you can build a successful business that fits your needs and requirements. Design a system that works for you and devise a strategy for coping with every conceivable issue that may arise. Doing so will transform your unique challenges into a custom-fit business that gives you the stability and peace of mind to thrive.
