Netflix has revealed to CNN that Korean dystopian drama, Squid Game, has been viewed by 111 million accounts since debuting on 17th September. To put this figure into context, Bridgerton was watched by 82 million households in its first 28 days.

The Korean drama is Netflix’s biggest-ever series at launch

The figure is based on the number of people who have watched at least two minutes of a show, but Netflix has not revealed how many people watched full episodes or, indeed, the whole series.

However, there is no debate that Squid Games’ impact has been huge. Bloomberg, which has had eyes on an internal Netflix data document, reports that the streaming service estimates that the show will create almost $900 million in value for the company. Bloomberg added “shares in the company have climbed nearly 7% since the release of “Squid Game”, valuing the company at $278.1 billion.”

The series follows desperate and indebted contestants compete in a brutal games –twisted versions of children’s’ games – to win a cash prize. It cost 21.4 million to produce, which works out about $2.4 million an episode. There is no news, as yet, on whether there will be a second series.
