In this exclusive interview, Ayla Nova shares how rest was more than recovery. Rest became a radical act of transformation, a beacon of hope in the face of adversity. From surviving a rare cancer diagnosis to creating the fastest growing Yoga Nidra channel, she has transformed her own healing into a path for others, offering Nova Nidra as a practice of resilience, authenticity, and deep rest.

Ayla Nova, Trauma-Informed Yoga Nidra Educator

Introduce yourself, tell us about you and your life.

My story begins with yoga in 2013 and deepened when I travelled to India to study traditional Tantra Yoga. But the defining moment came in 2018 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and was given a terminal prognosis. While preparing for a stem cell transplant, I returned to the one practice that gave me both rest and resilience, Yoga Nidra.

I first turned to Yoga Nidra for creativity and to reconnect with my dreams. However, it became a lifeline, helping me settle my nervous system, recover from deep exhaustion, and make peace with life as it was. Over time, Yoga nidra evolved from something I used to survive into a pathway of self-discovery, a way of remembering who I truly am, beneath it all.

What inspired you to create Nova Nidra?

Nova Nidra came from necessity. I felt compelled to share the medicine I had discovered that we do not deserve rest, rest is essential. It is a revolutionary act of healing. People are tired, wired, and longing for permission to stop. Nova Nidra exists to provide that a safe, trauma-informed space where rest can take root, and people can recover the energy to live more fully.

I first started writing Yoga Nidra scripts for myself. At the time, I was preparing for death, attempting to make peace with my life. Writing was my way of facing the truth. I kept returning to those practices again and again. Over time, my world shifted. I realized how much of my life I had spent drifting, hiding behind masks. Through Yoga Nidra, I found forgiveness, release, and an invitation to be my most authentic self, finally.

Death taught me something unexpected, how to be alive.

Eventually, someone saw the stack of scripts I had kept private and said, “You’re sitting on a mine of healing.” At that moment, something opened. I had been holding my healing for so long, but here I am now, sharing how pain can transform us for the better, too. What began as a means of survival has evolved into a service. Today, I share Yoga Nidra on my YouTube channel and podcast (Apple and Spotify), inside the Peace in Rest program, and through Nova Nidra Teacher Training.

What challenges do your clients face, and how does your work help?

Most arrive carrying stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness that have become chronic. Many are in survival mode, hoping to cope but unable to truly reset. Others are navigating grief, trauma, or illness.

Yoga Nidra helps guide the nervous system into states where healing can occur naturally. It doesn’t demand focus or effort. You lie down, listen, and allow. For many, it’s the first time they feel permission to rest without guilt. That shift alone can be life-changing.

What sets Nova Nidra apart from others?

Three things:

  1. Lived experience. I don’t teach this as theory. I lived it through illness, recovery, and rebirth.

  2. Trauma-informed safety is at the core of Nova Nidra. Every practice is invitational, offering choice and agency, empowering individuals to take control of their healing journey.

  3. Poetry and science. My language is crafted to soothe, yet grounded in an understanding of the nervous system.

This unique blend of lived experience, trauma-informed safety, and the artful integration of poetry and science makes Nova Nidra a practice that feels both secure and profound, inviting you to explore the depths of your being.

What’s next for you and Nova Nidra?

We’re expanding Peace in Rest, a comprehensive program that offers resources for sleep and resilience. It includes guided Yoga Nidra sessions, educational materials on the science of rest, and practical tips for incorporating rest into your daily life. The guided sessions are designed to help you relax, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. The educational materials offer insights into the science behind rest, helping you understand its importance and how it can positively impact your overall well-being. The practical tips provide simple yet effective ways to integrate rest into your daily routine, empowering you to prioritize your health and resilience. We're also continuing to grow the Teacher Training and inviting anyone interested into the Nova Nidra Community.

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be?

If I could change one thing, it would be the overemphasis on ‘love and light.’ While positivity has its place, it often bypasses the depth of our human experience. True healing asks us to sit with the dark as well as the light to acknowledge grief, pain, and shadow as teachers, not enemies. When we avoid the dark, we avoid the richest inner wisdom. Rest creates the space to face both the tender and the difficult, and that’s where transformation really blooms.

For readers inspired by your journey, what first steps would you recommend?

Start with a simple routine. Dedicate twenty minutes of guided Yoga Nidra each day for a week. Create a safe space, a cozy blanket, quiet surroundings, and soft lighting. Repeat the same practice for depth and consistency. Remember, the journey to rest begins with a single step.

And if you want companionship on your rest journey, join the Nova Nidra Community. It's a supportive space where you can connect with others who are also exploring the transformative power of rest. In the community, you can share your experiences, learn from others, and receive support and encouragement. It's a place where you can feel understood and inspired, knowing that you're not alone in your journey towards rest and healing. Remember, resting is always easier together.

Closing invitation

Rest is not escape, it’s returning home. Explore practices, join the Nova Nidra Community, or begin your journey with the Peace in Rest program. For those who feel called to guide, Nova Nidra Teacher Training opens the way to share this work with the world.
