Q&A with Katie Smetherman Holmes – Personal Branding for Entrepreneurs

In today’s crowded digital world, your brand is no longer just a logo or a tagline, it’s you. Entrepreneurs are realizing that personal branding isn’t optional, it’s the magnet that attracts the right clients, collaborators, and opportunities. To dig deeper into this topic, Brainz Magazine sat down with Katie Smetherman Holmes, Founder & CEO of Brand Studio Creative and Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine. Known for her empathetic and purpose-driven approach, Katie shares how entrepreneurs can stop blending in and start standing out authentically.

Smiling woman with long hair sits on a pink couch, wearing a blue dress. Bright, minimalistic background adds to the cheerful mood.

Katie, let’s start with the big question: What exactly is personal branding, and why does it matter so much for entrepreneurs today?

Personal branding is the art of intentionally shaping how people perceive you and your business. It’s not about creating a fake persona; it’s about amplifying your authentic self so the right people connect with you.

Think of it this way: people do business with people they trust, not faceless logos. For entrepreneurs, personal branding is the bridge between who you are and the value you provide. When you invest in it, you’re not just marketing, you’re building credibility, trust, and connection.

A lot of entrepreneurs struggle with visibility. How can a strong personal brand help them get noticed without feeling “salesy”?

This is such a common concern. No one wants to feel like they’re shouting into the void or turning into a walking sales pitch. The good news is that strong personal branding does the heavy lifting for you.

When your message, visuals, and values are aligned, your brand starts to speak for you. That’s when opportunities begin to come your way: clients, partnerships, speaking engagements, because you’ve built a recognizable brand presence. It’s not about being everywhere, it’s about being memorable in the right places.

For entrepreneurs just starting out, what are the first steps to building a personal brand?

First, you should start with clarity. Ask yourself these three important questions:

  • What do I want to be known for?

  • Who am I serving?

  • What values drive my work?

From there, you can share your visual identity, your brand voice, and your online presence. I always tell my clients: don’t jump straight into designing logos or websites before you know your core story. A polished brand without a strong foundation is like a gorgeous house with no plumbing; it looks nice, but it won’t hold up for long.

You often say “authenticity over aesthetics.” Can you expand on that?

Absolutely! Don’t get me wrong, I love beautiful design, but design without substance falls flat. If your brand looks amazing but doesn’t reflect who you are or how you serve, it won’t resonate.

Authenticity is what people remember. If your audience feels like they know you, they’ll trust you. And when trust is there, sales follow naturally. It’s not about perfection, it’s about showing up consistently and honestly.

What are some common mistakes entrepreneurs make when it comes to personal branding?

Here are the top mistakes I see over and over again:

  • Copying others. It’s easy to look at successful entrepreneurs and think, “I’ll just do what they’re doing.” The magic comes from being yourself, not from following a formula. When you copy, you blend into the noise instead of standing out. Your competitive advantage is your uniqueness, so don’t water it down.

  • Inconsistency. One week you’re posting motivational quotes in neon colors, the next week you’re sharing finance tips in muted neutrals. That confuses people. Consistency in voice, visuals, and values builds recognition and trust. If your brand feels scattered, your audience won’t know what to expect, and that’s when they move on.

  • Neglecting their story. Too many entrepreneurs hide behind their business. But people don’t just buy products or services; they buy into people. Sharing your journey, the messy moments, and the lessons learned creates an emotional connection. Vulnerability, when done with intention, makes your brand human and magnetic.

  • Focusing only on aesthetics. A polished logo and a sleek Instagram grid are great, but if the substance isn’t there, your brand is just surface-level shine with no staying power. Visuals should support your message, not mask the lack of one.

  • Ignoring personal branding. Some entrepreneurs think branding is “something I’ll get to later” once the business grows. But here’s the truth: without a strong personal brand, growth is slower and harder. Your brand is your growth strategy.

How does personal branding evolve as an entrepreneur grows?

Just like we evolve as people, our brands evolve with us. The key is to keep checking in: “Does my brand still reflect where I am and where I’m going?” Entrepreneurs who embrace this growth stay relevant and authentic. It’s about refining, not reinventing, every time you level up.

For entrepreneurs reading this who feel overwhelmed, where should they start today?

Start small, but start now. Share your story on LinkedIn. Update your headshot. Write down your brand values. Every small step counts.

Remember, personal branding isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being visible, relatable, and intentional. The earlier you begin, the sooner you’ll see your brand working for you instead of the other way around.

Katie Smetherman Holmes is proof that personal branding is more than a marketing buzzword, it’s the foundation of entrepreneurial success. By blending authenticity, strategy, and creativity, she helps entrepreneurs build brands that connect and convert.
