Lady in chair eyes close practicing meditation on a sunny weather.

As our brain struggles to process the incredible amounts of data it receives on a daily basis, it’s only natural that it will get tired, and that’s when it can affect our concentration, ability to sleep, relationships, emotional and physical health which can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

5 Common Myths

  1. I need to sit cross-legged on a cushion. Not true! You can sit on a chair, lay down, either on your bed or the floor if you prefer. You can be standing up, and there are even walking meditations too!

  2. It takes hours. Not true! Research shows that meditating for just 10 mins a day can improve memory and focus, BUT, when you first begin practicing meditation, aim for just a few minutes and gradually increase the time until you get a time that is comfortable for you.

  3. You have to be religious or spiritual for it to work. Not true! Meditation is for anyone who wants to find peace and focuses through breathing to quiet the mind.

  4. Your mind has to be completely blank. Not true and almost impossible! When we try to think of nothing, we actually start to think of more things. The trick with meditation is to acknowledge those thoughts and let them go. The more we practice meditation, the easier it is to bring our attention back to our breathing and to the NOW.

  5. There’s a right way and a wrong way to meditate. Not true! There are many ways to meditate, so do try different methods. Some will feel more comfortable to you than others, and meditation should feel good for you, if it doesn’t, try another but give it a fair go first!

So, now we've cleared the meditation myths, why not give it a try? There are lots of free meditations on the internet so don’t be afraid to try different ones, guided meditations are often easier to start off with. Have fun and enjoy taking a little time out – just for you!
