Abdullah Boulad is the founder and CEO of The Balance Rehab Clinic, one of Europe’s leading destinations for luxury mental health and addiction treatment. Headquartered in Mallorca with locations in Marbella, Zurich, and London, The Balance offers highly confidential, integrative care to high-profile individuals seeking transformation across mind, body, and life.

Born in war-torn Lebanon and raised in Switzerland, Abdullah’s life was shaped by early adversity and continual reinvention. A natural entrepreneur, he launched his first tech company at the age of 17 and quickly rose through the Swiss business ranks before establishing his own consultancy firm. But after a traumatic family crisis and subsequent heart attack, he was forced to confront the cost of success.

That turning point led him to an entirely new mission: to create a clinic that goes beyond traditional treatment to address the full human experience. Abdullah brings the same drive that once built businesses to now build balance: for himself, his team, and every client who walks through the doors.

With a multidisciplinary staff of Swiss medical experts and holistic practitioners, Abdullah has redefined what high-level care can look like: collaborative, deeply personal, and rooted in the belief that the most powerful form of leadership is being human first.

Abdullah, you run the top mental health clinic in Europe. What inspired you as an entrepreneur to enter the healthcare field and eventually launch The Balance?

It started from my personal story. I was running a venture capital firm out of Zurich when my wife fell down the stairs seven months pregnant. She was rushed into emergency surgery. Our son survived, but due to the medication she was given, his growth was stunted.

The year following his birth was the hardest of my life. It was a vicious cycle of stress, pressure, and exhaustion. I was trying to keep everything afloat for everyone else, that I forgot about myself. The stress caught up with me and I ended up in the hospital with a heart attack.

During my recovery, I started questioning everything. I became deeply curious about how we approach mental health care and how fractured the healthcare systems are. There was nowhere that offered truly integrated, personal care. I had to connect the dots to my own health story and seek out specialists in isolation.

As an entrepreneur, I saw a clear gap. I knew my purpose was in health. I didn’t know exactly which direction to take, but I knew the world was leading me there. I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Sarah Boss, who is currently the Clinical Director of The Balance. We wanted to build a clinic that treated the whole person physically, mentally, and emotionally, with true personalisation, expertise, and dignity. We created the clinic that I wish had existed during my life crisis.

Why did you choose to cater towards high-performing individuals?

Because I was one. I started my first company when I was sixteen years old. I spent years leading businesses and working in the finance industry. High-net-worth individuals and family offices surrounded me throughout my entire adult life; I understood their lifestyle, their expectations, but more importantly, their unique struggles.

I asked myself: how would I have wanted to be treated? That kind of personalised, compassionate, and integrated care didn’t exist when I went through it. I wanted to create the solution. That’s the entrepreneurial spirit. I had this problem, I saw this problem in my network, and I set out to solve it.

What is the most misunderstood aspect of the UHNW demographic?

People assume that because they have money, they have access to everything. But actually, it’s the opposite. Due to their status, they’re limited in where they can go and who they can trust. They can’t just walk into a local GP or seek help anonymously. Every step comes with exposure, risk, and scrutiny.

There’s also an immense empathy gap. There is so much shame about struggling, and that narrative is reinforced by society. So many of these individuals carry this internal belief that they are not allowed to ask for help. But we learn, time and time again, that money doesn’t protect us from emotional pain. No amount of wealth can prevent trauma, loneliness, addiction, or burnout. These are human experiences. And the higher someone climbs, the harder it becomes to admit they’re struggling, let alone get the support they truly need.

What are the biggest mental and physical health trends you see amongst this demographic?

I spoke with a potential client a few days ago who is a top CEO in the United States. He runs a major business, travels extensively, and has completely burnt out. He can’t stop ruminating about work, world events, everything. And he cannot turn off the responsibility towards his team and clients. The pressure he lives under daily is unbearable.

When that pressure becomes chronic, people turn to coping mechanisms. They self-medicate with cocaine, prescription drugs, and sleeping pills. These are survival strategies for individuals who have lost the ability to self-regulate.

This is the entrepreneurial dilemma. It’s really easy to glorify the success. The media only show you one picture - the wins, celebrations and milestones on social media. The story behind what the public sees is far more complicated. When you choose to be at the top, you increase the probability of mental health issues or addiction dramatically. Starting a company is a high-risk factor.

How does The Balance approach the treatment of mental health & addiction? Why is it different from other clinics?

Anyone can stay in a luxurious environment. You can fly a top doctor or psychiatrist to your home. You could even recruit an entire team of people to take care of you, but these are only the ingredients. It’s about how they come together. It’s about orchestration. This is what we do at The Balance.

We take a multidisciplinary, integrative, and holistic approach. But more than that, we are profoundly personalised. And I don’t just mean customised therapy sessions. Every aspect of care—from psychotherapy to personal training to sound healing—is tailored to that individual. Our therapists write daily internal reports. The team is constantly in communication. The treatment evolves as our clients do. That level of coordination is impossible to duplicate.

This, combined with our empathy, is what sets us apart. Our clients are some of the most intelligent people in the world. They can sense if people are authentic within milliseconds. Trust is the foundation of healing. Only when real trust and safety are present can transformation occur. Our team knows how to build that connection better than anyone. That’s what allows us to change lives.

What have you learnt about mental health & entrepreneurship since starting The Balance?

I’ve learned how vital employee mental health is. If your team isn’t well, your company won’t be either. That’s why we prioritise the well-being of our staff as much as our clients. We provide regular supervision for all team members who work with clients. If someone is struggling or feels stuck with a case, we provide them with access to complimentary internal therapy sessions with a psychotherapist. We also meet consistently as a team to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t, and we grow together, both clinically and personally. That’s something truly unique to us.

I also don’t count hours. It’s irrelevant how long someone sits at a desk. If someone is having a hard day, they should take time off, reset, and talk to someone. I’m always available to speak with them personally, or I’ll connect them with a therapist. I believe in compassionate leadership. We all share a common purpose, and we have each other’s backs.

What’s been the most significant shift you’ve ever seen in a business leader at The Balance?

We had a senior executive come to us addicted to benzodiazepines. He was carrying deep emotional pain he had never been able to process. The media had portrayed him in a harsh and inaccurate light, and that disconnect between public perception and his inner reality was devastating. He had fallen out with his business partner. He told us plainly: he didn’t want to live anymore. This was his last chance - he needed a bridge back to himself.

He went through a complete detox with us. At first, he was resistant to any complementary therapy. But slowly, things changed. By the end of his stay, he was doing everything. He was in the gym daily. He discovered yoga, mindfulness, and even started playing paddle. He learned to listen to his body. To slow down. He healed his relationship with his wife. And he’s now been sober for three years.

To this day, he checks in with me. He sends me videos and photos from around the world of him hiking, playing sports, and spending time with his family. He’s reconnected to life. And years later, his gratitude still deeply moves me. There is nothing like this feeling.

What advice do you have for all high performers to balance their ambition with their peace of mind?

For me, it comes down to this: live a simple life, but hold big ambitions. Don’t let your life become a performance. When you remove the pressure to constantly prove yourself, it becomes much easier to manage everything. Many people chase the concept of success: a house, a car, a boat. But these are material goals. Real success is knowing the lifestyle you want to live. Maybe it’s having a home, a stable income, and the freedom to take a holiday. Build a secure base for yourself. Then pursue your ambition from that place, not out of fear, not out of pressure. Because if you chase your dreams under pressure, you’ll always lose. And from there, it’s about rhythm and regulation. Find a structure that helps you reconnect with yourself every day. That’s what sustains you.

Where do you see artificial intelligence (AI) making an impact in healthcare over the next ten, twenty, or thirty years?

AI will have a massive impact. On the research side, we’re going to see enormous progress. AI will accelerate how we develop new medications and therapy modalities. It’s going to supercharge innovation and help us understand diseases in ways that were previously impossible.

Then there’s the daily service side: appointments, assessments, even parts of therapy. AI will eventually be integrated into every touchpoint of healthcare. Everyone will have their own health advisor in their pocket, or in their brain. It will replace many routine human roles, and that’s a good thing. We do not have enough mental health support to meet the demand. Right now, doctors are limited in time, knowledge, and scope. Everyone will be able to access more personalised care, and this is a net positive.

What AI will never replace is human connection. You can do a yoga class with an AI assistant, but it will never feel the same. That sense of being seen, of being held in community - that cannot be programmed. It has to be experienced. You can watch a documentary on wild animals in Africa but going there, hearing the sounds, feeling the ground - that’s something else entirely. It’s embodied. AI will transform a lot, but we will cherish human connection in a whole new way.
