A new term is becoming popular lately. What does spiritual wellness mean and where does it come from? Spiritual wellness comes from a holistic approach to wellness. If you think about it, there are 5 dimensions to wellness: physical, spiritual, mental, emotional, and existential. Our focus until now has been mostly on physical wellness.

Spiritual wellness is defined as the process of expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life, including individual morals and ethics. We consider how our values influence society. This process and analysis doesn’t need to involve religion. It isn’t about following a guru but developing into being your own guru. It is about having a relationship with yourself and your soul, living your life's purpose. The prerogative to spirituality is exclusivity. Scientists across disciplines agree that human consciousness is subjective, and is characterized by a kind of privileged first-person access (Overgaard, 2017). Exclusivity means that each person has access to their own. To experience spirituality, we have to be “conscious of''. Being conscious doesn’t still make us spiritual. Even micro-organisms can be seen in medicine as being “conscious”. We are witnessing a wonderful trend at the moment. People who are highly oriented to succeed are more and more interested and focused on their spiritual development. Why so? They know firsthand that money isn’t everything, relationships with their loved ones are not easy because we all have trauma and part of us we didn’t or don’t want to explore because of fear. Energy medicine comes to their help because we don’t need any more years of therapy to solve trauma. At the core of that is who we really are and how we really live when we are by ourselves, to start with. Can we be alone and do we like being in the company of ourselves. The power of being alone can be understood only if lived. In my own existential experience, I have been on a personal journey in the last 2 years where I have spent a lot of time discover the depth of my spirituality. This started after leaving a suddenly life-threatening relationship.

There was never a moment where I regretted leaving. That was already a start. It was one of those decisive moments in life. It was about living in the truth and asserting who I am and how I can be treated. It involved loving myself first. When I took that decision I had no idea where it would bring me. I didn’t know if I would profit from it and if it was wise to do it at that moment but at least I took the step to take action. A decision so radical which is leaving and stepping into the unknown, and I was following it purely guided by my intuition. I have since then met a lot of people who like me want to strengthen the connection with themselves and be there for themselves and that convinced me to go into coaching. I thought my experience might be of service to someone because there are a lot of people who are living their lives using purely logic. Living the intuitive way might seem scary if you consider it done by a very logic-oriented person. I considered myself self-confident and assertive but on the unconscious level I was just existing. Even if I considered myself self-aware from an early age, I had no idea of the reality of my real self-confidence level. I was nurturing everyone but me and helping another human succeed in his mother’s ambitions. I was not trying to reach my goals and my stars. Far from it. In my daily healings, I am now solving blockages faster and helping people in their journey to be the best they want to be. From the standpoint of Chinese medicine it’s only logic: where the energy flows, disease bends its bows. People who are already working on their personal development and seek coaching, already have the answers within them. There is often no health concern yet; they simply need guidance on their journey. It is beautiful that we are seeing more and more people interested in enriching themselves with spirituality. Starting from the individual level, expanding to a company level to arrive to western medicine which can benefit from analyzing humans at 360 degrees, as pure but layered beings in the universe. Let’s analyze now why spiritual wellness is useful in the workspace.

We need spiritual wellness not only on the individual level but also at the enterprise level.

Corporations, as well as small businesses, need to empower their employees. Companies need to be more sharp about mental health, which has a significant impact on the costs. Giving employees 15 minutes workout-break outdoors where they energize themselves and come up fresh has to become a standard. When I need to support mental health, I never forget 70% of serotonin production is controlled by the gut. That makes a huge difference on how a company can support an employee. Moreover, increasing positive social interactions has profound effects on people’s happiness. That is just science. Spiritual wellness brings positivity into the spaces we occupy. Being aware of our energy allows us to succeed in being mindful. It is a new tool to practice our connection to the higher life source and helps us be more self-compassionate and better cope with adversities. Our choices in life are more resonant with who we are as individual humans and we can respond to life with creativity. We come up with new solutions. Research shows that spiritual practices augment resourcefulness. Spirituality enhances creativity therefore it has to be facilitated in the workplaces where creatives are working. Let’s now consider how can spiritual wellness be useful to western medicine.

Can holistic medicine help with our machinery?

The biggest problem one can have on the physical level of existence is pain. Purely the musculoskeletal machine called human is more than muscles and the skeleton, the science is clear. The perception of pain is often more important than the tissues generating the pain in the first instance. Unconscious behavioral programming accounts for the majority of lifestyle habits and perceptions and a plethora of systemic and visceral conditions are known to contribute to the so-called “central sensitivity”. Yet, it is neglected in western medicine when treating pain. Let’s ultimately consider the most prevalent of painful musculoskeletal conditions, chronic low back pain (CLBP). There is indisputable evidence in the recognition of the multidimensional nature of it (O’Sullivan, 2011). In a study of persistent musculoskeletal pain, several factors have been shown to play important contributory roles. These include the patients beliefs around pain (especially fear-avoidance behaviours) (O’Sullivan, 2011), disrupted sleep patterns ( Jank et al., 2017), life stressors/emotions (especially anxiety and depression) (McBeth et al., 2007), gender (females are more affected) (Dodds et al., 2016), age (sensitivity to pain increases with age) (Kato et al., 2017). Many ancient cultures recognized a combination of complexity, integration and upward/downward causation in their traditional medical systems. Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and many forms of Indigenous or Shamanic medicine embrace the interaction of the organs with the soma, with the emotions and with the life-force. Soul cannot be studied by medicine because it’s there unapologetically. We can however analyze the concept starting from its definition. The psyche can be defined as “A spiritual-imaginal-somatic spectrum. It is a system that can't be studied by dividing it into parts like instincts and drives. It is moreover partly autonomous. Pain science has long ago moved from sterile Newtonian principles. Did you know that belly dancing increases the quality of life, fatigue, and depressive symptoms in women with breast cancer? A pilot study of a non-randomised clinical trial has revealed that Zumba dancing can improve the pain and functional capacity in women with fibromyalgia.

Dance as Medicine

Let’s first question whether it can be that dancing is a medicine. We have certainly danced since the beginning of time but why? Why do we do and why some of us choose to not dance? Dance is a universal expression. It is “upwards” in its expression and “downwards” in its inspiration. Upwards because art connects us with the divine and it is down because it connects us with the earth and our basic instincts. While we dance our feet create art connecting us also directly with the ground. When people choose not to dance, it is most frequently because they feel self-conscious. They are conscious of self. To dance is to let go of self-consciousness. We can all benefit now and then from letting go. Not taking ourselves too seriously. Dance is an instinct in action. We are drawn to movement intuitively. Movement offers us mobilization and expression, freeing blocked mental and emotional energies. Dance is how we express our soul. It is where and who our true being is. To others, it is invisible until it is. Even people who don’t dance have it in their lives, inhabiting them like a ghost. What does it mean? The definition of ghosts in Merriam-Webster (2018) is “the seat of life or intelligence”). It is our deepest and truest self. What is unclear is if we are living following our higher self or our shadow side. That can be revealed now by a spiritual wellness assessment. Are you ready to upgrade your operating system?
