Practical strategies to help leaders guide their teams through adversity and emerge stronger together. Leadership is tested most during turbulent times, when uncertainty looms and challenges seem insurmountable. Whether it’s an unexpected system outage, navigating a global pandemic, or facing high employee turnover, how leaders respond shapes the trajectory of their team’s morale and effectiveness. Drawing from my personal experience of leading teams through crises—including a week-long system outage, the COVID-19 pandemic, and workforce changes—I’ve discovered actionable strategies that help foster resilience, trust, and forward momentum even during the toughest times.

In this article, I’ll share insights on how to lead through adversity with empathy, clarity, and purpose. These practical solutions can help any leader guide their team to not just survive but thrive through uncertainty.

The reality of turbulent times

Turbulence in the workplace is often marked by fear, confusion, and a sense of helplessness. In my journey as a leader, I’ve encountered significant challenges:

  1. System hacking and downtime: When our system was hacked, employees feared losing access to vital data and tools, and we faced the daunting task of regaining functionality.

  2. Employee turnover: Losing key team members created instability and gaps in our ability to support the facilities reliant on our services.

  3. The COVID-19 pandemic: This unprecedented global crisis brought immense strain to our team. Constant turnover, absenteeism, and grief from resident deaths in facilities we supported added to the uncertainty and emotional toll.

Through it all, I learned the importance of staying calm and focused. Clear thinking enabled me to strategize and find solutions, ensuring my team had the guidance they needed.

7 key strategies for leading through turbulent times

  1. Remain calm but stern: A leader’s demeanor sets the tone for the team. By remaining calm, you create a sense of stability. However, adopting a stern, decisive approach reassures your team that you are in control and taking action.

  2. Advocate for your team’s needs: Turbulent times often bring new challenges for employees. Advocate for the resources, adjustments, or support your team needs to stay effective and maintain morale.

  3. Foster open communication: Keep the lines of communication open. Regular updates and educational discussions about the situation reassure employees that they’re informed and involved in the solution.

  4. Be transparent to build trust: Share as much as you are allowed about what’s happening and what actions are being taken. Transparency shows your team that you’re in the trenches with them.

  5. Offer flexibility: Adjust goals and deadlines to reflect the realities of the situation. Flexibility demonstrates understanding and helps employees focus on achievable outcomes.

  6. Lead by example: Treat your team as you’d expect to be treated by your own leaders. Show empathy, accountability, and a commitment to collective success.

  7. Be authentic and accountable: Authentic leadership builds respect. Acknowledge mistakes, share lessons learned, and take responsibility for your actions and decisions.

The outcomes of strong leadership in tough times

Through these strategies, I’ve seen teams emerge stronger, more cohesive, and resilient. During the system outage, remaining calm and transparent kept my team focused as we worked together to restore functionality. During COVID-19, advocating for flexibility and fostering open communication helped us navigate constant uncertainty with a shared sense of purpose. These approaches not only kept us afloat but also strengthened trust and morale within the team.

Conclusion

Turbulent times are inevitable, but they don’t have to derail your team. By leading with empathy, clarity, and strategy, you can guide your team through any storm.
