I’ll never forget this. One of my mentors told me that if I don’t want to be doing what I’m doing now in 2-3 years, what am I doing, and why am I doing it? If the thought of running your business three years from now fills you with dread, it’s time to reevaluate what you’re doing. Your business should be something that excites you, something you can see yourself growing with over the long haul. Let’s break down how to determine if you’re on the right path and what to do if you’re not.

How to know if your business has longevity

1. Do you love what you do?

The first sign that your business has staying power is whether you genuinely enjoy what you do. Passion is the fuel that keeps you going through the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship. If your current business isn’t something you’re passionate about, it might not be sustainable in the long term.

2. Is your business aligned with your values?

Ask yourself if your business aligns with your core values and what you want from life. When your work resonates with your beliefs and lifestyle, staying committed and enthusiastic is easier. If your business feels disconnected from who you are, it may be time to pivot or redefine your goals.

3. Are you still learning and growing?

A business that challenges you and provides growth opportunities is one that you can stick with. If you’re not learning new things or feeling inspired, boredom and burnout can quickly occur. Ensure that your business allows for continuous development, both personally and professionally.

What to do if you’re not excited about your business’s future

4. Re-evaluate your business model

If you can’t see yourself in this business in the next few years, it’s time to take a hard look at your business model. Does it need a refresh? Could you pivot to something more aligned with your interests? Sometimes, minor adjustments can reignite your passion and give you a renewed sense of purpose.

5. Delegate and outsource

One reason you might feel stuck is because you’re doing everything yourself. Delegating tasks that drain your energy can free you up to focus on what you love. Consider hiring a Virtual Assistant or Online Business Manager to take over the day-to-day operations, so you can spend more time on the aspects of your business that excite you.

6. Set new goals

Stagnation often comes from not having clear, inspiring goals. If you’re feeling unsure about the future, set new, challenging goals that push you out of your comfort zone. This can rekindle your enthusiasm and give you something exciting to work toward.

7. Explore new opportunities

Sometimes, the problem isn’t the business itself, but the lack of variety. Exploring new opportunities within your current business—like launching a new product, targeting a different market, or learning a new skill—can make your work feel fresh and exciting again.

How to ensure you’re building a business you’ll love long-term

Building a business that you’ll love for years to come requires intention and self-awareness. It’s about creating something that not only pays the bills but also brings joy and fulfillment to your life. To ensure your business has staying power, make sure it’s something you can see yourself growing with, something that aligns with your values and keeps you learning.
