Life is all about balance: achieving a work-life balance, working hard, playing hard, and finding that perfect equilibrium between how much we save and how much we spend. But have you ever looked at it from an energetic perspective? Masculine energy versus feminine energy, the yin and yang of life.

A woman in a pink top and jeans is balancing on a fallen tree trunk in a sunlit forest.

When I began my work as a spiritual teacher, this subject held great significance for me, and it took me some time to fully understand it.

Why? I believed my energy was feminine, but it was more masculine. I was always doing, moving, and going, very logical, to be honest. I never allowed myself to relax into the present moment (or instead, to relax my nervous system) to enjoy the present moment. I was almost always anxious, and my body was here, but my mind was thinking about the next moment. I also did not trust my intuition; I ignored those cues when things didn't feel right and overrode them with logic.

My mind was focused on goal-setting, reaching the next goal at work, at the gym, or in life in general. I wanted to do it all, and it was exhausting.

Even as I write this, I cringe at the fact that I once believed this was how my life was to be lived. Now, goal-setting is not a bad thing, nor is being in your masculine energy; it is how you get things done. It keeps you organized and on task. It helps you reach your goals, so this is a good thing.

However, understand this one thing: if your energetic makeup at a core level is predominantly masculine, then that's perfect. The issue for me was that, at a core level, my energetic makeup was dominantly feminine. My soul did not want to be doing all the time; it just wanted to be. It craved nurturing and receptivity, and I was struggling to trust my intuition. In realizing this now, I see that I was entirely out of alignment with who I truly was, and I was fighting it.

I was disconnected.

I was disconnected from myself, from who I truly was at a core level, and most importantly, I was disconnected from the Creator.

What does disconnection mean?

When we navigate life fearing the unknown, doubting ourselves, and worrying about what's to come, we can develop a disconnection from ourselves and our Creator. Disconnection can drive us to become reactive to the world around us. Disconnection can also occur when we ignore our physical, emotional, and spiritual cues in favor of what is familiar and known.

Over time, if you continue on this path, it can lead to burnout and stress. Life is meant to be balanced, and we can achieve that by balancing our masculine and feminine energy. When we do this, we develop a strong sense of self, and most importantly, we strengthen our connection to the Creator.

Masculine vs. feminine energy

Some traits of masculine energy include:

  • Logic

  • Strength and courage

  • Decision-making ability

  • Leadership

  • Goal-oriented mindset

  • Protector

  • Provider

  • Discipline

  • Willingness to take risks and embrace new opportunities and experiences

Feminine energy, however, includes:

  • Intuition

  • Empathy

  • Nurturing

  • Creativity

  • Collaboration

  • Flexibility

  • Vulnerability

  • Emotional expression

  • Sensitivity

  • Receptivity

  • Mindfulness

Men and women possess both energies within their physical vessels, and these energies have nothing to do with gender. Some women can be predominantly energetically feminine, while others may have more masculine energy at a core level.

Why is this important? We need to operate in life from our core energy to live a balanced life. Therefore, if your energy is predominantly feminine, as is the case for me, you cannot manifest the life you crave by continually operating from your masculine energy all the time; it cancels each other out.

It's about finding that sweet spot between doing and being, the balance.

How do you find your dominant energy?

There are several ways to connect with or find your dominant energy.

Meditation is one of the best ways to connect with your inner and authentic self. It can help you tune into your intuition and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. A great way to communicate in meditation is to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are my core values and beliefs?

  • What brings me joy and fulfillment?

  • When do I feel most like myself?

  • What is my soul yearning to express or experience?

  • What activities make me lose track of time?

  • How do I feel when I am in alignment with my true self?

Taking the time to inquire within can help you gain deeper insight into your dominant energy and the essence of who you are.

How I transformed my energy

For most of my life, I was operated from my masculine energy. I never took the time to relax and be present. I felt guilty if I didn't finish a project I set for myself. I was always seeking the next goal to achieve or exploring the next place to go. I would overextend my energy because I could, but over time, I was emotionally drained, and I never understood why.

I recall one specific time when I slept for approximately eight hours, woke up around 8 AM, and remained awake until noon before taking a four-hour nap. My body and my energy were in overdrive.

Following my spiritual awakening, I have come to understand, from an energetic perspective, that my energy is predominantly feminine. I needed to allow myself and my vessel time to relax, to flow, to receive, and to nurture not just others but myself as well. I needed to permit myself to say no and not feel guilty for taking a mental health day.

This is the balance that we all seek.

The giving and receiving, the strength and empathy, the logic and intuition, the doing and being.

When we find the balance that suits us best, life becomes truly fulfilling. This balance between masculine and feminine energy enables us to embrace both adventure and risk while incorporating playfulness. This equilibrium creates abundance, safety within oneself, and, most importantly, joy. Our job in life is to find ways to enjoy the present moment because we know it is enough right now. Life works well when we are balanced. Remember, a balanced body is a happy body.
