Currently, I own and manage a thriving e-commerce store that specializes in vintage music memorabilia, with over ten thousand listings. However, for years, I was defined by a different set of numbers, the highs and lows of bipolar disorder and the weight of PTSD.

The pivot to purpose

For years, I struggled with the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder, wrongfully thinking that these would limit my success and define me as a person. These illnesses brought many challenges, including intense mood swings, hypervigilance, delusions, and periods of poverty, unstable housing, and unemployment. Despite having experienced the darkest corners of the mind, with proper treatment and lifestyle changes, I slowly let the light in, finding solace in small positive steps. Over time, I was better able to manage my PTSD and bipolar disorder symptoms, allowing me to live a more normal, productive life. Eventually, I found stability and was able to rechannel my creative energies into employment that fit my mental wiring and unique needs. I sought self-employment as a way to free myself from the constraints of the traditional work environment, and after much trial and error, I found success and fulfillment by creating my own eBay store. The business succeeds in its core mission of bringing joy and music to the world while providing me with purpose, identity, and income. “Dynamo Dan’s Music Market” is more than just a store, it is a testament that mental health recovery is possible.

Prioritize flexibility

Working a 9-5 job with stringent rules can be difficult for someone with PTSD and bipolar disorder. For years, I went through cycles of unemployment, unable to match my talents and shortcomings to a suitable workplace environment. Navigating the highs and lows while avoiding triggers was daunting, and it took many years until I discovered my path to success through self-employment. Through eBay, I am able to work on my own terms, in a quiet, safe place free from triggers, on a schedule that I create. When I am low on energy and feel fatigued, I need only work the hours I feel comfortable with, free from the quotas and stress of the standard workplace. When I am feeling more energetic and capable, I can channel that extra energy toward creative output in an environment where I will not be judged. Through my online store, I am able to work in a flexible environment that fits my needs, rather than having to mold myself into a pre-existing box.

Seek purpose

By channeling my mind away from negativity towards my e-commerce store, I am able to refocus on productivity and positivity and rebuild my confidence and self-esteem. Every sale I make is a win that pushes me away from my illness and rebrands my identity into that of a successful business entrepreneur. I am no longer simply a mental health diagnosis but a proprietor of music memorabilia and concert history. The work is satisfying, and the feedback I receive reminds me that I provide a valuable and much-loved service to many.

Engineer your environment

This is a business where I have almost complete control over my environment and schedule, liberating me from the rigidity and stress of the typical workplace. Working at home on eBay, I am able to avoid unnecessary triggers and take extra vacation time when necessary. The ability to take breaks when needed is also vital, and I use this extra time to exercise through brisk walks in the park or by enjoying fitness games on my VR headset. Integrating exercise into my work schedule also releases endorphins and serotonin into the brain, making the job more enjoyable and therapeutic for managing my symptoms.

Create your fit

There are many jobs that are unsuitable for me because they exacerbate my PTSD and bipolar disorder symptoms and can damage my mental health. For years, I viewed this as a limitation to my success, but eventually, I began to view it much like a roadmap. Through experience, I started to see the best path forward, and eventually, I found my destination as an eBay reseller through my own personalized route. This job fits into my unique needs and allows me to work in a comfortable, flexible environment that I control. On your next job search, consider employment that fits your personalized, unique needs and strengths. Think of it like finding the right blueprint. If you can’t find a position that fulfills your requirements, consider creating a business that is molded to your specifications. If you can’t fit yourself into a business, then create a business that fits into you.

Create your own success story

Ready to turn your personal journey into professional success? I transformed my challenges with bipolar disorder and PTSD into a thriving e-commerce venture by building a business on my own terms. My journey proves that mental health recovery and entrepreneurship can function together when you create a workplace that is tailored to your unique needs. Your unique challenges can become a blueprint for success, so start by designing your own today.
