How Derek Candelore Built Success Through Systems, Not Luck

Ask Derek Candelore what has had the biggest impact on his career, and he won't point to an award, a championship, or even the business he built. He'll point to the systems behind them. Whether he was competing as an undefeated regional Golden Gloves heavyweight boxer, setting football records, coaching athletes, or growing Roman Paint Pros from the ground up, Candelore learned that lasting success comes from the habits and processes that happen long before anyone sees the results.

Just as important as the systems, however, is the reason behind them. For Candelore, success has never been about collecting titles or recognition. It's about creating opportunities for the people who matter most to him. "Providing for my wife and kids, taking care of Mom, and giving back to the community. That's what drives me," he says.

Those priorities were shaped through adversity as much as achievement. After losing his father at a young age and growing up without financial stability, Candelore understood early that success would have to be earned. Today, as a third-generation painting contractor, national business mentor, and franchisor, he believes talent may create opportunities, but systems are what turn those opportunities into lasting success.

Resilience before results

Long before he entered the painting industry, Derek found purpose through competition. Sports gave him structure, discipline, and the opportunity to test himself. He became a record-setting wide receiver, a distinction he still holds through the PIAA and WPIAL for average yards per catch. He later retired as an undefeated regional Golden Gloves heavyweight champion.

Those experiences taught him lessons that carried far beyond the field and the ring.

"I had to recreate myself as somebody that nobody believed could," he says. "I needed to fail hard in order to have the drive I have. Otherwise I might not have appreciated the success if it were just handed to me. Failure is a part of the process because on the other side of darkness is a world that few will know."

Rather than viewing failure as something to avoid, Derek came to see it as an opportunity to grow. When he eventually made the move into entrepreneurship, that same mindset helped him navigate challenges, adapt, and keep moving forward even when success wasn't immediate.

Building systems instead of chasing motivation

After owning Apex Fitness Center and coaching high school football, Derek founded Roman Paint Pros in 2010. From the beginning, his goal wasn't simply to build a successful painting company. He wanted to build a business that could consistently deliver the same high-quality experience for every client.

"I run a real business with systems, proven marketing, and we absolutely deliver to the clients' expectations without exception," he says.

Rather than depending on talent or hard work alone, Derek developed repeatable processes that guide everything from customer communication to project execution. He believes systems create consistency, and consistency builds trust.

"Everything I do has a systems-based approach now," he explains. "I'm self-taught. I hire nationally respected mentors."

That philosophy has helped him expand beyond being a business owner. Today, he mentors entrepreneurs, serves as a national instructor for the Small Business Development Center, and continues growing Roman Paint Pros through franchising.

Great leaders invest in getting better

Derek doesn't believe experience alone is enough to build a successful business. As Roman Paint Pros has grown, he's continued looking for ways to improve, even if that means learning from people who have already achieved what he's working toward.

"Everything I do has a systems-based approach now," he says. "I'm self-taught. I hire nationally respected mentors."

For Derek, seeking advice isn't a sign of weakness. It's part of the process. Rather than trying to figure everything out on his own, he surrounds himself with experienced mentors who challenge his thinking and help him continue refining the business.

That mindset has supported his long-term goal of growing Roman Paint Pros into a multiple seven-figure company while maintaining the same high standards that built its reputation.

Consistency creates trust

For Derek, quality isn't something that should change from one project to the next. It's a commitment that clients should be able to expect every time.

"We have the highest standards in the painting industry. Our only goal is to deliver the highest-end product with great service, never cutting corners while implementing premium products."

That commitment has earned Roman Paint Pros recognition, including the SBA Small Business of the Year Award in 2021 and Best of Westmoreland in 2023. While he appreciates those honors, Derek says awards are never the end goal.

"Keeping level-headed and reminding myself that delivering high quality to the client is the most important thing."

He believes businesses build strong reputations by consistently doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Remembering why the work matters

Although Derek has built a successful career, he says the biggest motivation behind everything he does isn't business growth.

"Providing for my wife and kids, taking care of Mom, and giving back to the community. That's what drives me."

He and his wife, Laura, have been married for 18 years and are raising their four children: Natalia, Carter, Giana, and Zayne. He also says the happiness of his children, caring for his elderly mother, and helping those who are less fortunate are the accomplishments that matter most.

Those priorities shape the decisions he makes as both a business owner and a leader. Beyond his company, he supports organizations throughout the Pittsburgh area, including the Easter Bunny event at Westmoreland Mall and the Latrobe Soccer League.

"Confidence in business carries over to personal life. My business and personal life go hand in hand."

Success was never about luck

Looking back, Derek doesn't point to one defining moment that changed his life. Instead, he credits the habits he built over time. Learning from failure. Seeking mentorship. Creating systems that produce consistent results. Staying focused on the people who matter most.

His career has taken him from athletics and boxing to coaching, business ownership, and mentoring entrepreneurs across the country. While each chapter has been different, the lesson has remained the same.

Success isn't built by chance. It's built through discipline, consistency, and a willingness to keep improving.

For Derek, those principles have never been just about growing a business. They've allowed him to provide for his family, care for his mother, support his community, and help other entrepreneurs build businesses of their own.

"I'm always continuing to learn, always joining mentoring groups, always being better than I was the day before."

It's a mindset that continues to shape both his business and the legacy he hopes to leave behind. For Derek Candelore, success has never been about luck. It's about building the right systems, staying committed to continuous improvement, and remembering why the work matters.
