Understanding our energetic subtle body can have a profound effect on our physical health and wellbeing. This ancient wisdom and knowledge have been a key stone in holistic healing for centuries. However, in our current world, it can often be completely disregarded in a reductionist health care system. With holistic care becoming more widely accepted in the mainstream, the ability to look and understand yourself on all levels of your being is becoming increasingly the way forward for many. Is connecting with your subtle body the missing piece in your puzzle?

Many traditions and modalities focus on the energy systems of the body. Reiki is one of those complementary therapies that can have profound effects on your health and well-being.

Understanding Reiki

For many, Reiki healing can be a hard concept to grasp. It is an intangible force that can leave the logical mind completely in knots and begging for hard evidence to be presented.

The truth of the matter is, even though science is starting to provide us with tangible results, you have to be open-minded enough to trust in the intangible.

We have two sides of our brain. We have the logical, scientific, driven, masculine side, and we have the intuitive, playful, creative, free-flow, peaceful, feminine side. Both sides are equally important, and if both are active, you can drive and take action on your creative thoughts and ideas and bring them into this world. You will be able to see things from a different perspective. A dead end for the logical left side of the brain can be a beautiful opening and beginning for the right side of the brain.

There are many things in this world that we can not touch but know to be there. A good example can be if you think about your thoughts. Thoughts are not a tangible aspect, but you have had the experience of having a thought. Thoughts are merely a frequency and vibration, they are an energy.

Any form of intuitive healing is tapping into this frequency and vibration. What a wonderful gift it is when you open past your physical.

How does Reiki work?

Firstly, it helps to understand from a physics perspective what makes up the whole being. These layers are not simply restricted to the human experience, these layers make up everything we can see in the physical world.

  • There is the physical aspect, which is the physical body or object.

  • Molecular level

  • There is the atomic level

  • There is the sub-atomic level

  • There is the Wave level, vibration, and frequency

  • Then we step into pure awareness, which is everything that ever has been, will be, and is. This is the collective consciousness. A total experience of oneness. Within meditation, we call this samadi.

The art of Reiki is working on the wave level of consciousness, and it will have a direct impact on all the other levels of the being. Like any energy-based modality, this is deep healing that will impact your physical body and life.

Through a deep meditative state and a process of coregulation, universal healing energy flows during a reiki session, creating a symphony of physiological responses. Increasing research has provided beautiful insight into the ability of Reiki to promote autonomic nervous system homeostasis, generating parasympathetic dominance. By reducing sympathetic arousal, deep relaxation, self-healing, and equilibrium can be established within the mind-body connection.[1]

Another Reiki study suggested that there is a direct link to the nervous system, which provides positive results for the management of pain relief and anxiety. Reiki sessions have been proven to alleviate pain and improve quality of life with reductions of anxiety, depression, and perceived stress levels in the individual.[2][3]

Reiki has a strong focus on the energetic chakras that are located along the spine of the physical body and are at points where energy channels called Nadis meet. There are seven main chakras, all of which can influence your basic behaviors and attitudes. Energy acts like a magnet, what each chakra is vibrating, we are attracting.

What chakras make up the lower triangle?

There is a sea of information out there about chakras, how they function, what they are, and how we can work with them. To really grasp a true understanding of each chakra, you, yourself, must personally experience and develop your own personal awareness of the area. Only then will you be able to truly learn your divine makeup and how you can help yourself move through life’s ebbs and flows.

With healing modalities like Reiki, you start to have that experience. You allow yourself to be open enough to start to view your life from a different perspective and to truly start releasing what is no longer serving you so you can be healthy, happy, wise, and rise.

Each chakra corresponds with a particular level of consciousness, and it also has a close association with the endocrine system within the body. Traditionally, chakras govern certain emotions, thoughts, and desires. When in balance, the chakras will reveal our gifts. When out of balance, we will begin to take on the polarity effects of the chakra or shadow aspects of self. Neither is right nor wrong, as both provide you with exactly what you need to go through as you evolve in consciousness.

If you start to become aware of your thoughts, these can reveal to you where your consciousness is residing. With this awareness and understanding, you can decide whether or not you want to start consciously working on areas of your life that can and will help you through your health journey.

Our chakra system is made up of two triangles. The lower three chakras are the most important because if these areas are not balanced, we can not successfully move into our higher triangle. Our heart centre is the bridge between the two.

The lower triangle houses our root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras. With awareness of these chakras, you can truly move towards empowering yourself forward in your health, life, direction, wants, and needs. You start to take responsibility and understand that by fine-tuning your energetic body, you can be the driver of your life, not the passenger. By no means is this an overnight process, but with dedication and self-love, you will start to embody your intentions.

The root chakra

The root chakra is our security, safety, trust, it's our foundation. It reflects more of our relationship with our mother. This can be our biological mother or, on a macro level, can represent Mother Earth. If you are constantly stuck in fight/flight, are in survival mode, or feeling like the world is on your shoulders, you will find it harder to open up to the creative flow within you. If you have addictive behaviour, avoid intimacy, are a workaholic, or are driven by a lack of self-worth, then anchoring into the self and allowing yourself to become vulnerable to your truths can help you step forward. Asking yourself truthfully, "Do I feel safe in my life, and if not, where?" or "Do I feel scared in any aspect of my life?". These questions start the process of self-enquiry. Addressing the lack in our lives and asking what lessons can be learned from adversity can bring you to the present moment and can allow you to trust in your healing process, which will bring balance to this area.

The sacral chakra

The sacral chakra is your emotional aspects, it houses your creativity, sexuality, and your fire for life. It represents our relationship with our Father. Our personality is really developed in this chakra. It is our passion for life, and when balanced, you will feel a generosity and willingness to share with others and will have mutually empowering relationships. If there is an imbalance in the chakra, you may develop shallow relationships and have a shame of the body, and will always seek the desire to be seen. Expressing your true self can feel like a fair reach, and you will constantly change yourself or your personality to fit into your present situation. Ask yourself, "How do I truly want to live in this world?".

The solar plexus

The solar plexus is all about our personal power. It is our sun. Our light. When this chakra is in flow, we digest everything in our lives. From the food we eat to the news we watch, to the thoughts, emotions, and feelings we experience. We will have willpower and control over our own lives. If this area is unbalanced, we will need external validation, we might give our power away to fit in, or we might have dogmatic thinking where we are rigid and inflexible in the ability to take on new information, viewpoints, or changing circumstances.

Ask yourself, “How can I create balance in my life today?”

When the lower subtle body is balanced, we will flow, and there will be an opening that can naturally occur in the upper triangle. This is not to say that there are no polarities in the higher chakras, but when you are anchored in the lower triangle, in trust and worth, moving through the upper triangle can be easier. This is where our unique individual wisdom and spiritual gifts can shine in our lives through an open, loving, compassionate heart.

Bring balance back to the masculine & feminine

With the way the world is operating right now, it can be glaringly obvious that, as a collective, we are stuck in aspects of the lower two chakras. The balance between the feminine and masculine aspects of self. With this awareness, we have a divine opportunity to correct the imbalances of the masculine and feminine aspects personally, which will ripple a positive effect in the outer world, our physical world, health, and wellbeing.

Health and wellness do not reside when you are stuck in the sympathetic nervous system, when we are stuck in fear, isolation, separateness, anxiety, and numbness. Although difficult in a highly dominant logical world, choosing to tap into your feminine aspects can energetically start to bring balance back to your whole body and life.

Let's be really honest here, you will move up and down your chakras as you move through life. We are human, and this is meant to happen. We are here to learn. The beauty of doing the work on our lower chakras means when the going gets tough next time around, you might not stay stuck in the polarities of the lower chakras, which allows energy to move more freely during challenging times rather than becoming stuck and stagnant, which provides the space for dis-ease to settle in.

In conclusion

When you start to ground your foundations in your life and integrate the dance between mind, body, and spirit, you have the wonderful opportunity to consciously choose growth, surrender, and deep healing. The transformative power of Reiki is an ancient healing art that is now paving its way through our modern way of holistic healing, which is an exciting health integration moving forward. By grounding your lower triangle, you can embrace your health and wellbeing through a deep knowing and trust of self, where you can release with love the emotions that have drained your energy and have created stress and imbalance in your life, so you can move forward with less pain, anxiety, and fear.
