Vijay Muni, Occupational Therapist

Hello, Vijay! Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us today. Let's start by getting to know you better. Could you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become an occupational therapist? "Hello! Thank you for having me. My journey into occupational therapy began when a dear family member suffered a stroke and lost the use of her right arm. Her occupational therapist (OT) taught her how to use her right arm to put on clothes and make a cup of tea. Both activities were essential to her, and her reaction to realizing the impossible turn possible was inspiring. Witnessing the transformative impact of occupational therapy on individuals' lives, I drew to this 1eld's ability to empower people and improve their daily functioning. I then pursued my master's in Occupational Therapy from The City University of New York. As an OT, I gained experience in outpatient orthopedics, stroke rehabilitation, fall prevention, and chronic pain management. I am so proud to be in a career dedicated to helping others achieve their fullest potential.

Those are crucial areas of expertise. What sets your approach to occupational therapy apart from others? My approach is grounded in empathy and collaboration. I 1rmly believe that clients should be active participants in their rehabilitation journey. By understanding their goals and aspirations, I tailor evidence-based treatment plans that address their specific needs. This personalized approach fosters meaningful outcomes and empowers clients to succeed in rehabilitation.

That sounds truly inspiring! With your experience and expertise, could you tell us about the areas in which you specialize and the services you offer at Empire City Occupational Therapy? "Certainly! Over the years, I have focused on several areas within occupational therapy. My specializations include outpatient orthopedics, stroke rehabilitation, fall prevention, and chronic pain management. At Empire City Occupational Therapy, we offer comprehensive services tailored to your unique needs. Our team is dedicated to providing top-notch care, encompassing evidence-based practices, empathetic approaches, and collaborative treatment plans." Empathy and collaboration are essential qualities for a successful therapist. Can you elaborate on your approach to occupational therapy and how you actively involve clients in their rehabilitation journey? "Absolutely. My approach to occupational therapy is rooted in empathy and understanding. I believe in forming a strong therapeutic relationship with my clients, which helps me comprehend their goals, aspirations, and challenges. Through this collaborative partnership, I found that we develop personalized treatment plans that resonate with their needs and desires. Empowering clients and making them active participants in their rehabilitation journey is essential. We can achieve more meaningful and sustainable outcomes by involving them in decision-making and setting achievable milestones. For example, I had a patient who suffered from a shoulder injury that prevented her from playing swimming. After a thorough physical examination and interview, I prescribed her with appropriate treatments. She found that she returned to swimming within two months with less pain! We included many simulated swimming activities so she would be less nervous with swimming."

It's wonderful to hear about your client-centered approach. How do you incorporate evidence-based practices into your treatments? "Evidence-based practices are the cornerstone of effective occupational therapy. Staying up-to-date with the latest research and developments in the field is crucial to providing the best care possible. I continually educate myself by attending workshops, conferences and collaborating with other professionals. By integrating the latest evidence into our treatment plans, we can ensure that our clients receive the most effective and appropriate interventions."

That dedication to continuous learning and improvement is commendable. Lastly, tell us about your motivation to establish Empire City Occupational Therapy PLLC and your vision for the future of the practice. "The establishment of Empire City Occupational Therapy PLLC was born from a desire to make rehabilitation more accessible and impactful for the community. I wanted to create a space where individuals could receive top-tier care personalized to their unique needs. Our vision for the future is to expand our services, reach more individuals, and contribute to the overall well-being of our community. We aim to be a beacon of hope for those seeking to improve their lives through occupational therapy. Please visit Empire City OT's YouTube channel for home exercise programs you can do at home!
