When the doors of his family’s manufacturing business closed after two decades, Dustin Stanley didn’t just lose a jobhe lost the future he thought he was building. “I wanted to retire from there someday,” he recalls. “But when it closed, I found my perfect career.”

Smiling man with a beard in a blue suit and white shirt against a plain white background.

That unexpected ending became the start of something much bigger. Today, as the Founder and President of Stanley Wealth & Retirement in Sarasota, Florida, Dustin has become a nationally recognized financial advisor known for transforming complex challenges into clear strategies that help others find peace of mind in retirement.

From the shop floor to the boardroom

Dustin grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, surrounded by family and hands-on work. At Hytec, the family’s business, he learned every step of the tradefrom machine operation to executive leadership. “My dad taught me everything,” he says. “From how to weld to trigonometry.”

That early education shaped his view of work and leadership. He rose from machine operator to executive vice president, spending 24 years helping grow the business. “I was always a numbers guy,” he says. “I loved math, problem-solving, and figuring out how things fit together.”

When Hytec closed, Dustin faced an identity shift. But instead of stopping, he went looking for what came next. “I walked into a friend’s retirement planning firm and asked if he was hiring,” he says. “That one conversation changed everything.”

Reinventing a career and finding his niche

What started as a chance opportunity turned into a fast-moving career. Dustin entered the financial services world in 2013 and quickly proved he had the skillsand the driveto succeed. “I loved meeting with people and taking their financial stresses away,” he says. “It felt natural to help them focus on the fun things they’ve always wanted to do.”

Two years into his new career, his mentor made him a partner at Strategic Wealth Designers, recognizing both his talent and his potential. Together, they helped grow the company from about $20 million under management to nearly $3 billion by 2025.

“It wasn’t overnight,” he says. “We built it by working hard and earning trust. My dad used to say, ‘No matter what, we just work harder,’ and that stuck with me.”

Launching a new vision in Florida

By 2025, Dustin was ready for a new challenge. He launched Stanley Wealth & Retirement, a firm focused on helping retirees and pre-retirees create financial strategies built for clarity, security, and confidence.

His vision was simple: bring education to the forefront. “Most people don’t get taught how to plan for retirement,” he says. “So we decided to teach them first.”

That idea led to the Academy of Retirement, a program that offers classroom-style education before clients ever sit down for a one-on-one meeting. “Our classes are about giving people the tools to make informed decisions,” Dustin explains. “If you understand your plan, you’re less likely to make mistakes.”

It’s a model that’s grown beyond Sarasota, reaching across Florida with offices in Orlando, Naples, and Fort Myers. But at its core, the firm still operates on one principle Dustin repeats often: listen first, advise second.

“You need to understand what worries people and what their goals are,” he says. “Most advisors think one solution fits everyoneit doesn’t. Every family needs their own plan.”

Lessons from family and faith

Behind Dustin’s professional drive is a strong sense of family and faith. He and his wife, Kristin, split their time between Florida and Kentucky, where they raised their two sonsJake, 27, and Skye, 16.

Skye, who is on the autism spectrum and a talented chess player, keeps Dustin grounded. “He’s one of the most beautiful souls you’ll ever meet,” he says. “He reminds me every day what matters most.”

When he’s not working, Dustin enjoys boating, golfing, fishing, and riding motorcyclesa mix of reflection and adrenaline that balances his busy schedule. He also volunteers with Samaritan’s Purse, a nonprofit that helps families rebuild after major losses.

Faith, too, plays a steady role in his life. He attends Grace Family Church in Tampa and says his beliefs guide how he leads and serves others. “It reminds me that everything we build is temporary,” he says. “But how we treat peoplethat lasts.”

A mindset for growth

Each December, Dustin sits down to write his goals for the next yearsome professional, some personal, some spiritual. “I like to think in two-to-three-year increments,” he says. “You can do a lot more than you think in that time.”

That forward-focused habit reflects the same mindset that’s driven his success from day one. “Success is never owned,” he says. “It’s rented, and the rent is due every week, month, and year.”

His approach to business and life is simple but effective: stay humble, stay hungry, and help others win. “I measure success now by how many people I can help,” Dustin says. “That’s the real reward.”

A legacy of building and believing

From working the factory floor in Kentucky to leading one of Florida’s fastest-growing retirement firms, Dustin Stanley’s journey is a story of resilience and reinvention. His career proves that big ideas often start with simple valueshard work, honesty, and a genuine desire to serve.

“I’ll never get to a point where I feel like I’ve made it,” he says. “Because there’s always someone else I can help. And that’s what keeps me going.”
