Cornelius Alig has dedicated his life to shaping Indianapolis through a deep connection to its history and a commitment to community-driven development. From urban planning and historic preservation to leading regional growth initiatives, Alig’s vision has revitalized neighborhoods and contributed to the city’s growth. With over 15 years of service on nonprofit boards, his leadership is grounded in service and collaboration, ensuring that his impact on Indianapolis is felt for generations to come.

A lifelong connection to Indianapolis
Cornelius Alig has called Indianapolis home his entire life, save for time in New Orleans and New York City). He grew up surrounded by the city’s history, architecture, and neighborhoods that shaped his sense of place. That connection never faded.
“I know this city as well as anyone,” he says. “Every block tells a story from when it was originally platted in 1821, until now.”
That initial interest in history led him to architecture and planning with urban redevelopment eventually becoming his focus. Through planning, vision and teamwork he was able to bring big ideas to life.
From developer to community builder
“Development isn’t just about buildings,” he explains. “It’s about people, neighborhoods, and history. You have to respect what’s already there and imagine what could be.”
That perspective pushed him to take on projects tied to historic preservation and downtown revitalization. Each decision balanced growth with community needs. The results can still be seen in the renewed vitality of Indianapolis and nearby cities.
Leading regional planning efforts
Alig’s leadership skills caught the attention of city leaders. Under Mayor Bart Peterson’s administration, he was appointed Vice Chairman for the Regional 2020 Plan. This initiative set long-term goals for growth and development across Central Indiana.
“It was a chance to think bigger than one project or one neighborhood,” Alig recalls. “We were asking what this region should look like twenty years down the road.”
The plan focused on infrastructure, sustainability, and economic development. Alig worked with city officials, business leaders, and community advocates. His ability to bring people together around shared goals proved invaluable.
A legacy of service on nonprofit boards
Alig’s professional work is only part of his story. Over the years, he has served on more than 15 nonprofit boards. These roles have ranged from cultural organizations to community service groups.
“I’ve always believed you give back where you can,” he reflects. “Sometimes that means lending expertise, sometimes it means just showing up and doing the work.”
His contributions have supported education, the arts, and local service initiatives. Each role reflects his broader philosophy: leadership is about service.
Staying engaged in community projects
Even today, Alig continues to stay active in social service projects across Indianapolis. He works on efforts that provide resources to families, improve neighborhoods, and create opportunities for residents.
“These projects keep me grounded,” he says. “They remind me that development isn’t just about land or policy. It’s about improving everyday life for people right here.”
Lessons from a career of big ideas
Looking back, Alig sees a common theme in his career: turning ambitious ideas into practical results. Whether shaping city plans, preserving historic landmarks, or serving nonprofits, his approach blends vision with action.
“You can dream big,” he notes, “but you also have to roll up your sleeves and figure out the details. The real impact comes from making those ideas work on the ground.”
For Indianapolis, that impact has been lasting. Downtown revitalization projects, regional planning initiatives, and preserved historic sites all bear his influence. For Alig, the reward has been seeing his hometown thrive.
“I’ve been lucky to spend my career doing work that matters to the city I love,” he says. “That’s all I ever wanted.”
