After a year of dealing with a worldwide Pandemic, I am sure many individuals have either been unable to work because they are in contact service-type jobs or have worked remotely, rather than working in a “bricks and mortar” setting and interacting with colleagues all day.

Whatever is true for you, and whether you continue to work remotely or are now getting back to work as before, career and fulfillment are still fundamentally very important aspects of your life. So, this might be a great time to ask yourself whether you are considering options in your career, or maybe you enjoy what you do. Still, there are areas where you feel change is needed, or you may be feeling a sense of being stuck, and need new and fresh challenges to create the motivation of doing your best work?

Fulfillment is important. We spend many hours of our life at work, so ask yourself, are you truly happy and motivated in the career you already have, or are you contemplating the next move you want to go forward to, are important questions?

The questions below are some suggestions to ask yourself and think about how you are feeling and the areas holding you back.

Fulfillment: Does the work you do challenge you and utilize your talents? Are you able to stretch yourself to an even greater version of yourself? Or are you finding the work draining, dull, and simply a paycheck to meet life’s demands? If it were not for the paycheck, would you still want to spend your time and energy there?

Engagement: Are you actively engaged with your work, co-workers, and environment, or are you physically present but scrolling through Facebook and other social media platforms? Thinking, perhaps, about other challenges in your life rather than your work challenges?

Energy: Are you finding enough energy to meet each day’s demands while still having reserves at the end of the day to feel fulfilled in your personal life? Are you generating healthy amounts of energy through daily actions, or do you have to get energy from external sources, such as coffee and energy drinks?

Authenticity: Do you feel a sense of alignment with who you are and how you show up in and outside of work? Are you working congruently with your values, and what those values stand for?

Ambition: Are you striving for more in your career, or are you content with your current position and salary? If so, what lets you know you feel comfortable, and what might be at risk if you were to have a different level of ambition?

Communication: How is your overall communication with your colleagues, boss/manager? Are you able to clearly and fully express thoughts, ideas, and challenges? Does your work environment feel safe and inviting enough to bring up uncomfortable topics that can be discussed? Or do you feel that you have to keep to the status quo and not express anything which might be construed as awkward about something that may have happened in the workplace?

These are just some questions you can ask yourself, and writing down the pros and cons in each section, it can really help you organize your thoughts about where you are right now and where you would like to be in the long term. Making inroads with your true feelings also helps you understand confidence levels, motivation, and fulfillment in your career path toward ambition and success.

I hope the above helps to implement some fundamental truths in your career and also increases your own awareness of what it is you want. Change is never easy, but taking the first step to realize your goals can give you better choices and create a better and more successful career.
