Chartering a yacht remains a distinct hobby, now increasingly evolving into a fast-growing lifestyle movement that combines luxury, freedom, and flexibility. While most holidaymakers still prefer hotels, boutique resorts, or luxury villas, a growing number of both experienced sailors, digital nomads, and travelers, in general, are exploring the world of bareboat yacht charters, luxury catamaran rentals, and even full-season superyacht sabbaticals.

A yacht cruises on a dark blue sea. Text reads "Explore new horizons on board our premier yachts!" Images of various regions below.

Each year, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean become seasonal hubs for charter yachts, ranging from family monohulls such as the Dehler 38, sleek new Lagoon 51s, to iconic Sunreef catamarans, Princess motor yachts, and Heesen or San Lorenzo superyachts. For a select few, however, sailing isn't just a holiday, it's a long-term journey, a sabbatical at sea, and, in some cases, a viable alternative to owning a yacht.

Long-term yacht charters and sabbaticals: From 4 weeks to 18 months of bluewater living

While most charters last one to two weeks, a rising trend is the long-term yacht charter, often spanning entire seasons or even crossing oceans, all done within 2, 6, or 12 months at sea. The clients at A2A Yachting have embarked on journeys that last anywhere from two months to over a year, sailing through the Ionian Islands, Balearics, Leeward and Windward Caribbean islands, and even transoceanic routes through the Panama Canal to the South Pacific, all the way since 2009.

Imagine spending five months on a 40-foot sailing catamaran, such as a Bali 4.2, starting in Cannes, exploring Corsica, sailing to Sicily via the Amalfi Coast, island-hopping through the Cyclades, and then wrapping up in Turkey's Turquoise Coast. That's exactly what our clients do. Others may charter a Lagoon 51 in the Baltic Sea, exploring Northern Europe, while others will pick a 58-foot Hanse yacht in the Caribbean, sailing from St. Barths to St. Lucia through the Grenadines for the full winter season. In comparison, the most adventurous will also consider a long-term charter on a 55ft catamaran towards the ABC Islands, cruising Colombia's coastline, before finally reaching the remote San Blas Islands of Panama or even crossing the Panama Canal to reach the Galapagos. It's been done with A2A YACHTING already.

A life-changing journey: When a five-week charter turned into a year at sea

In 2009, an Australian family of four set out for a five-week sailing vacation in Croatia aboard a 45ft monohull. As they explored the Dalmatian coast, from Dubrovnik to Vis, Hvar, and Mljet, their lives changed. Enchanted by the sea's rhythm, they decided to buy a bluewater sailing yacht and spend a full year sailing from the UK to Australia.

Their route took them across the English Channel, the Bay of Biscay, the Canaries, the Atlantic Ocean, through the Caribbean, and across the Pacific, from the Galapagos to French Polynesia, eventually arriving at the Great Barrier Reef. While they did this as boat owners, their story has since inspired us at A2A YACHTING to enable many others to explore similar routes through long-term sailing charters, avoiding the risks and responsibilities of full yacht ownership.

Why more sailors are choosing to charter, not buy

Weighing options before a decision is an important step

At A2A Yachting, we've specialized in premium bareboat, luxury, and superyacht charters since 2002. Whether it's a bareboat charter of a Dufour 530, a crewed Sunreef 60 in the East Med, the new Lagoon Eighty 2 in the Red Sea, or a charter on a 130ft Sunseeker superyacht or a 300ft Lürssen mega yacht in the South of France, we guide clients through personalized itineraries worldwide, from the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Indian Ocean to the Baltic Sea, French Polynesia, and Southeast Asia, among others.

However, the latest trend is long-term chartering, which is increasingly viewed as a smarter alternative to yacht ownership. It eliminates, or considerably reduces, the burdens of maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and complex mooring logistics. This model has seen steady growth in recent years as an alternative to boat ownership. Clients can charter for just 4 weeks, 6 to 12 months, or up to 18 months, sail multiple regions, and even do transatlantic crossings, depending on their goals. By doing so, our clients benefit from the financial flexibility and expert guidance that long-term chartering offers—often at a fraction of the cost of buying and outfitting a vessel for offshore sailing.

Some rent. Some buy, others build. All sail smarter.

What would you do given the choice?

For some, long-term chartering is a gateway to yacht ownership. After chartering for 9 months, a couple might decide to purchase a second-hand Oyster sailing boat or even commission a new build from CNB, Nautor's Swan, or Privilege Marine. At A2A Yachting, we offer consultative support not only for charters but also for yacht acquisitions, helping clients select the right builder, negotiate price, and oversee delivery within 6 to 18 months. And if you want to build your own bespoke yacht, a unique project, or a new type of yacht, we can also assist by advising or choosing the most suitable shipyard.

Hybrid and remote work have taken over; take advantage!

With the rise of remote work and satellite internet like Starlink Maritime, more professionals are working from the sea. Some are even homeschooling their children while sailing and living aboard yachts for extended periods. Retirees are downsizing to the sea, trading traditional routines for solar-powered catamarans, hydro-generators, and bluewater adventure. Whether you dream of crossing the Atlantic, exploring the South Pacific, or island-hopping through the Indian Ocean, a long-term charter offers access to remote areas accessible only by boat, yet without ownership. A2A Yachting can make it happen, usually without the financial burden of boat ownership, or on board your own chosen yacht, delivered to your preferred location and designed in part by yourself if needed. Adventure is no longer limited to one or two weeks a year. With the right planning and the right charter partner, it can last for months, or even a year or more.

At A2A Yachting, we don't just rent boats; we help you design your ideal sailing lifestyle, whether that's a one-month skippered catamaran charter, a 12-month sabbatical across oceans, or a custom-built yacht delivered to your desired port. The freedom of the open sea awaits. Are you ready to set sail?

Even if not, maybe it's time to start exploring.

You can therefore consider all options, as long-term charter can indeed replace boat ownership in many real-life scenarios. And, if in your specific case, it does not, we can explore a new build or the acquisition of a boat for your family, until we agree on which is the best.

Let us help you create your once-in-a-lifetime itinerary or build your dream yacht to start living it.
