We have more choices than ever at our fingertips when it comes to time consumption. There are constant streams of media in front of us based on our scrolling habits, text messages, emails, etc. All throughout the day, our attention span is challenged. While there is definitely a lot of good content that flows our way, there are also numerous distractions. So how can we best control our habits and be mindful about what we are consuming?

Hand writing "WEEK" on a sticky note on a teal wall, beside notes reading "friday," "TO DO," "GOAL." Mood is organized and focused.

Determine your priorities

Does the media you are consuming align with your priorities and values? For example, if you are focused on improving your eating habits and managing your stress, are you reading content that will benefit you in these areas? While you do not have to dedicate 100% of your scrolling time to just these two areas, the majority of the time you allocate to consuming content should be aligned with your priorities.

Identify the right sources

There are so many options and “experts” to follow, and it can be overwhelming. As you determine your priorities, finding the right content providers is important. For example, if you want to focus on gaining muscle while not gaining weight, identifying credible sources for both nutrition and exercise will help to narrow down which publications you decide to follow.

Create boundaries

Our time is precious and if we are not careful, we can spend more time consuming rather than executing. If we are too distracted by media and not actually setting aside the necessary time to execute and enjoy our priorities in life, than we are not managing our time well. Identify time during the day to eliminate distractions, be in the moment and execute what it is that you want to accomplish.
