David Hao is a dynamic, multitalented professional whose career bridges law, innovation, and cultural patronage. Hao is a seasoned entrepreneur and legal expert, and he launched his first tech venture at just 15 years old. The email marketing company quickly rose to a $5 million valuation, setting a new standard in digital outreach. He later earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Ottawa and an LL.M. from UC Berkeley, specializing in law and technology.

His legal acumen and entrepreneurial drive converged in his role as co-founder of DA Technologies Inc. (operating as “Troovy”), a platform that redefined how educational creators monetize their work. Beyond his business achievements, Hao is an avid supporter of the arts, philanthropy, and gastronomy.

He holds certifications as a Certified Chef de Cuisine (CCC) and a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), and his culinary pursuits are deeply influenced by his appreciation for Renaissance and modern art. He actively supports institutions such as the San Francisco Symphony and the Asian American Foundation and lends his voice to causes like The Hunger Project and SF SPCA. Drawing inspiration from cultural icons like Dostoyevsky, Verdi, and Picasso, Hao exemplifies a holistic approach to success, one that values creativity, impact, and meaningful contribution.

Where did the idea for Troovy come from?

That's a very insightful question, particularly because this initiative took place well before the rise of TikTok and the global shift brought on by the pandemic. Around 2017, a close friend and I co-founded a venture with the goal of empowering creators to earn a sustainable income through educational video content. At the time, the creator economy was still in its infancy, and monetization pathways were limited and often inconsistent.

Our vision was to build a platform that would democratize access to income generation for content creators, especially those focused on sharing knowledge and expertise. The idea resonated deeply, and we were fortunate enough to be accepted into Y Combinator, which gave us the opportunity to further develop and validate our concept.

At its core, we imagined a future where all a creator would need to succeed financially was a smartphone and access to our platform, removing traditional barriers and offering a streamlined way to reach and monetize an audience. Looking back, it was a forward-thinking effort that anticipated many of the trends that are now central to the digital creator space.

Why did you decide to pursue building monetization solutions for educational creators?

The world is in a constant state of evolution—shifting, expanding, and redefining itself with each passing day. As a first-generation immigrant, I vividly remember the drive I felt to make an impact, to leave a mark that mattered. If a platform like the one we envisioned had existed during my childhood, it could have completely transformed my life.

Just imagine the number of students or young professionals who take on teaching roles or side jobs to support their academic or career aspirations. Now imagine if they no longer had to commute or drain their energy juggling multiple responsibilities.

What if they could earn a meaningful income by sharing their knowledge and passion on their own terms, from anywhere in the world? That’s the kind of change we set out to create. It wasn’t just about building a product but about reimagining access, opportunity, and agency for people who have something valuable to teach.

You've successfully built companies from a young age — what mindset or daily habit do you think made the biggest difference in scaling your early ventures?

I believe that maintaining a deep sense of gratitude for every single blessing is essential. It grounds you and brings clarity to every endeavor. Gratitude fosters humility, and with humility comes the ability to approach challenges with a level head. When building anything, it's crucial to center others: to truly consider their needs, their struggles, and their aspirations.

How can we make their days a little lighter, their paths a bit clearer? That question should guide the process. At the heart of it all, the mindset has always been simple yet powerful: just get up. Take action. Don’t overthink. Show up consistently. Progress doesn’t come from grand, dramatic gestures; it comes from steady, intentional effort, day in and day out.

How do you stay ahead of emerging trends when it comes to technology and digital innovation?

Never allow yourself to remain stagnant. Growth requires movement, even when it’s imperfect. The act of trying and failing is often far more valuable than it seems in the moment. Every misstep carries within it a lesson, an insight, a refinement of your path.

Failure isn’t a setback; it’s a signal that you’re in motion, that you’re learning, evolving, and pushing beyond your comfort zone. In the long run, the courage to try and to try again builds the resilience and wisdom that success ultimately demands.

What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs who are trying to balance making an impact with building a successful company?

Establishing a consistent routine. Structure is the foundation of sustained progress. Prioritize physical health by making time for the gym or regular movement; it sharpens both body and mind. Eliminate distractions that don’t serve your growth and stay disciplined about where your energy goes. Most importantly, remain steadfast in your convictions. In moments of doubt or difficulty, it’s your clarity of purpose and commitment to your values that will keep you grounded and moving forward.

What would you say to others who find themselves in a similar position, balancing multiple professional passions?

Pursue what nourishes your soul, contributes meaningfully to the world, and sustains you in the process. The path may not unfold exactly as you envisioned—it rarely does—but that doesn’t make it any less valid or fulfilling.

True happiness and contentment come from alignment and doing work that feels purposeful, that uplifts others, and that also supports your well-being. When all three intersect, you’ve found something worth holding onto.

What are some key takeaways you would like to share with aspiring entrepreneurs?

Always remember the climb, the late nights, the doubts, the quiet resilience it took to keep going when nothing was certain. Those moments of struggle, when you were pouring everything into a dream as yet unrealized, will become the most cherished memories. They are the foundation of your story, the chapters that shape your character and fuel your gratitude once things begin to fall into place. Ironically, it’s often those hardest times you’ll look back on with the deepest sense of pride, and even joy, because they’re proof that you gave it your all and kept going anyway.
