In today’s fast-paced, 24/7 world, burnout is becoming more and more commonplace. Whether you’re a committed professional, a business owner, or a student, the weight of performance can result in unbearable stress and fatigue. But how can you tell when you’re on the cusp of that tipping point?

6 warning signs to watch out for, so you can take action before it’s too late
Chronic fatigue
Are you tired all the time? If you wake up tired even after a full night of sleep, you might be experiencing burnout. This is not just "ordinary" fatigue; this is pervasive fatigue that won’t leave, even if you sleep a great deal. You might find yourself surviving on endless cups of coffee and energy drinks to get through the day.
More cynicism
Are you starting to feel more cynical or negative about your job or responsibilities? Growing detachment or disillusionment may indicate that something isn’t right. This shift in perspective can affect your work, relationships, and your interactions with co-workers, friends, and family. There might be other telltale signs, such as rolling your eyes more than usual.
Decreased performance
Are you finding it difficult to get through the day and, at times, can’t complete the tasks you used to handle easily? Burnout can cause productivity to plummet; one day, you may feel ineffective as the little things begin to mount and your to-do list becomes overwhelming. If you’re struggling to focus or recall things, that’s a warning sign.
Physical symptoms
Burnout doesn’t only affect your mind; it can manifest in your body too. If you suffer from headaches, stomach issues, or a weakened immune system, it could mean chronic stress is taking a toll on your body. If you notice these signs increasing in frequency, it may be time to reconsider your workload and the level of stress in your life.
Emotional exhaustion
Feeling emotionally drained? With burnout, you might reach a point where you feel like an empty shell, overwhelmed by emptiness and emotional exhaustion. This can lead to irritation, anxiety, or even depression. If you're finding that you're isolating from friends, family, or colleagues, it could be a sign you're burning out. When the pressure is on, it’s easy to retreat into your own shell, but that can exacerbate feelings of isolation and tension. Remember, asking for help is an important step toward protecting yourself against burnout.
Dismissing self-care
If you’ve brushed your wellness and health to the side, it’s likely a sign that burnout is lurking around the corner. Missing that workout, meal, or activity that makes you happy can lead you down a slippery slope. If you’re finding that you’re numbing yourself with TV shows or social media as a replacement for self-care, it’s time to take some actionable steps.
Prevention starts with identifying these symptoms. If any of these signs feel familiar, take action. Talk to a good friend, seek a professional, or even inject some de-stressing practices like mindfulness and exercise into your daily routine. You don’t need to burn out. Get back to yourself by refocusing on your physical and mental health. And remember, you are allowed to take a pause and ask what should come first for you and your well-being. After all, a better you is a more productive, satisfied you!
You can find a good therapist, whether employed or a student. Many universities and workplaces offer free, confidential counseling sessions. If you run your own business, consider business coaching and delegate tasks to a virtual assistant to minimize your workload.
