Are you the kind of person who carries all 12 grocery bags from the car to the house by yourself? Even when your spouse offers to help, “Nope, nope, I got it!”

What about when you’re feeling overwhelmed and overloaded, running around like a chicken with your head cut off, and a team member kindly asks if there is anything they can do to take something off your plate?

“All good!” You reply, despite feeling like you’re drowning.

Okay, how about this one. When a friend compliments you, do you graciously accept the praise, or do you shrug it off and think to yourself, “Oh, she’s just saying that?”

Take some time to think about these questions and answer honestly.

These are small examples of not receiving or accepting help, but it goes much deeper, and I see it often, especially with women.

What if I told you that the inability to receive could actually be blocking you from everything the Universe wants to bring into your life.

What if by simply opening yourself up to receiving — saying yes to help, accepting compliments, and asking for what you want — you could, in fact, be paving the way for more abundance? More ease? More feelings of worthiness?

Are You Blocking the Flow?

Chances are if you’re anything like I’ve been in the past, you have a hard time simply RECEIVING. Receiving is an art form! I’ve learned over the past year that when we’re willing to receive, we show the Universe that we are open and receptive to even MORE! More peace, joy, freedom, whatever it is that you want to have in your life!

So, how do you make the switch? How do you go from being someone whose normal M.O. is to turn down the support being offered to you to someone willing to open up their arms and take in as much as they can- even to the point of overflowing with abundance?

Receiving is a Practice

It’s important to remember that the practice of receiving is exactly that; it’s a practice. You don’t simply know how to do it, and it can often take time to become comfortable with it. But when you learn it and employ these five tools, you will find there’s so much more on the other side of it than you could have ever imagined.

Let’s Break it down into five action steps.

1. Get Clear on What you Desire

What do you most want in your life? I know this isn’t a simple question to answer, so again, I encourage you to take time with it. When you go within and get quiet with yourself, what are the things you desire to the core of your being?

Make a list in your journal and refer back to it often to remind yourself of all of the things you want to bring into and bring forth in your life.

2. Create a Statement

Sometimes being a good receiver boils down to reclaiming your power, retelling your story, and deciding that you are good at receiving! Instead of repeating that old message that you’re a person who doesn’t accept help or compliments, flip it. Tell yourself that you’re open to accepting all forms of abundance. Word it however you like, but craft an “I Am” statement that tells the NEW story you want your life to be telling.

3. Accept Compliments and Kind Gestures

I know this is going to be really hard for some of you! I want to challenge you that the next time someone says they love your hair or the way you wrote that outstanding article or praises you for a job well done, just say, “Thank You.” Do not explain, “Oh well, my hair is getting so scraggly and really needs a dye job,” or, “Oh yeah, I just kinda whipped it together, it was nothing.”

When someone offers help, take them up on it. When someone gives you a gift, thank them. Receive the compliment, gift, or act of service as it was meant to be received.

Bonus tip: It makes the giver feel really good too when they feel their gift is welcome and received.

4. Give to Yourself

What is something that you have been dying to do or get for yourself that you keep pushing aside because your kids need new socks and underwear, or your husband’s schedule doesn’t allow for it? Give yourself permission to give yourself what you want and desire. This does not need to be of Ferrari proportions! This could be as simple as a peaceful walk alone, a soak in the tub, a jacket that you have been eyeing at your favorite shop. Be open to receiving, even from yourself.

5. Celebrate the Little Things with Gratitude

It always comes back to this one, doesn’t it? Every single time something comes into your life, give thanks for it. A new client, a free coffee at Starbucks, a $10 Amazon gift card slipped into your birthday card from Nana. Celebrate and give thanks for what you are receiving.

By turning your attention to all the areas the Universe is already pouring into your life and giving thanks for it, you will invite MORE to come flooding in! It will help you to be more open, aware, and present to every good thing that wants to come your way!

Are you ready to stretch and strengthen those receiving muscles and try these five things out for yourself? What I’ve learned in putting these practices into place is that I can have everything I desire and more. I don’t need to do it all, and I unlocked an awareness that anything is possible.

I want those things for your life too. So tell me, will you work on being more open to receiving? I’d love to hear how it goes. Find me on Instagram and let me know!
