We live in a world where sometimes we can become anxious and fearful of the things going on around us. Those feelings can become so overwhelming that it feels like we are drowning and we wonder if we'll ever be able to get back to the surface again for a breath of fresh air.

Here are 3 things to do when life becomes overwhelming to help bring you back to the surface again.

1. Take a Step Back: We get so caught up in everything that is going on that we don’t know which way is up. At some point, we need to decide that we don’t want to live in this overwhelming state anymore and take a step back. Taking that step back helps us to see what is making us anxious and fearful and how we can manage them.

2. Stopping/Cutting Back On Social Media and the News: Social media and the news are always around us. They keep us updated when we want to know what's going on in the world or see what our friends/favorite celebrities are doing. They can become toxic very fast. Watching too much news can make us feel anxious, fearful and angry. Social media does the same but it can also make us feel bad about how we look and who we are as a person.

In order to stop them from overwhelming us we need to disconnect ourselves from both platforms. It is hard to disconnect from social media especially if you are using it for business purposes. You should have two separate accounts. Only look at the personal account a few times a day for a short amount of time. Make sure you are not using your business account to look up people who are on your personal account.

When it comes to the news, limit yourself on how much you are watching. It can be tempting to have a 24-hour news network on in the background for noise while you work but this can be distracting and lead to anxiety, anger and fear.

3. Being Grateful for the positive things in your life: When life is overwhelming and the feeling that nothing is going right, being grateful for the positive things in your life can be difficult. Listing the positive things is important to do because it grounds us in the here and now and gets us away from the “what ifs”. Make a list of things that bring you joy. Saying what we are grateful for helps us to overcome being overwhelmed.

Don't let anger, anxiety and fear get the better of you. Doing these small things helps us come up for air when it feels like we are being drowned by the world around us. You are a strong person.
