Dave Scrivens is a lymphologist with 20+ years of experience. The lymphatic system is critical to your overall health and well-being. A Lymphologist teaches his clients the physical, mental, and nutritional properties required to either reverse or keep their bodies disease-free in today's toxic world.

Headaches, fatigue, brain fog, and swelling can feel like separate problems, but they may leave you wondering whether something connects them. The lymphatic system helps manage fluid balance and supports immune function, yet many people know little about how it works. In this article, David Scrivens explores 24 symptoms often attributed to lymphatic congestion, what may affect lymphatic flow, and why persistent symptoms deserve a closer look.

What if I told you that headaches, brain fog, bloating, joint pain, allergies, and that low-grade “something’s off” feeling you can’t quite name are all pointing at the exact same problem? Not six problems. One.

I’ve spent 20+ years as a certified lymphologist, and here’s the question that changed how I look at disease: What if symptoms aren’t the disease, they’re just the smoke alarm? What if the smoke signals are disease, and when you find out about it, it’s the start of a fire? Stick with me for a second.

Lymphatic system congestion: Like a house with backed-up plumbing

Every disease has a list of symptoms attached to it. That’s how we’re trained to think: diagnosis first, symptoms second. Rheumatoid arthritis has its symptoms. Eczema has its symptoms. Chronic fatigue has its symptoms. We treat them like they live in separate rooms of the house.

But here’s the thing nobody talks about: Your body has a plumbing system, and when it backs up, it doesn’t back up in one room, and it is not just the electrical that gets affected.

Effects of a lymphatic system versus a congested one

That system is your lymphatic system: over 500,000 miles of vessels, 600 to 700 lymph nodes acting like filtration checkpoints, moving 2 to 4 litres of fluid through your body every single day. It’s the drainage system for every cell you have, running through all organs. When it’s clean and flowing, metabolic waste gets removed, immune cells travel freely, and nutrients get delivered efficiently at our cellular layer. When it’s congested? Waste sits. Inflammation builds. Immune cells move sluggishly or, worse, get confused and start attacking healthy cells.

Autoimmune disorders, allergies, a weakened immune system. All linked to lymphatic system congestion.

So here’s my question, and it’s the one I want you sitting with: If the same congested plumbing can show up as a headache in one person and psoriasis in another, is the “disease” really 20 different problems, or is it one clogged system showing up 20 different ways depending on where the blockage is worst?

I’m not saying lymphatic congestion is every disease. I’m saying it might be the common thread running underneath a lot of them, and that’s worth paying attention to. If your lymph system is congested, it leaves your body open to disease – any disease to start and manifest. It might be said that if your lymphatic system is kept clean, you are way less vulnerable to disease, at least.

The 24 symptoms of lymphatic congestion

Here’s what I see over and over in practice. These aren’t random. They cluster around the areas where lymph tends to pool first: the neck, chest, gut, and extremities.

  1. Frequent headaches or a feeling of pressure in the head

  2. Brain fog or trouble concentrating

  3. Chronic fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix

  4. Swollen or tender lymph nodes (neck, armpits, groin)

  5. Puffy face, especially in the morning

  6. Swollen ankles, feet, or hands

  7. Bloating that doesn’t match what you ate

  8. Constipation or sluggish digestion

  9. Difficulty losing weight despite doing “everything right”

  10. Cellulite or dimpled skin texture

  11. Dull, congested-looking skin

  12. Acne, eczema, or psoriasis flare-ups

  13. Itchy skin with no clear cause

  14. Dark circles under the eyes

  15. Frequent colds, flu, or slow recovery from illness

  16. Recurring sinus congestion or postnasal drip

  17. Sore throat or swollen tonsils that keep coming back

  18. Joint pain or stiffness, especially in the morning

  19. Sore or achy muscles without an obvious cause

  20. Cold hands and feet

  21. Breast tenderness or swelling (especially cyclical)

  22. Allergies or sensitivities that seem to be getting worse

  23. Mood swings, irritability, or low-grade anxiety

  24. A general feeling of being “toxic” or heavy in the body

If you’re recognizing several of these lymphatic congestion symptoms in yourself, you’re not imagining it. That’s not a coincidence. That’s your lymphatic system waving a flag.

What causes a congested lymphatic system

The lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like your heart. It relies on movement, breathing, hydration, and muscle contraction to keep fluid flowing. So the usual suspects add up fast: sitting for hours a day, chronic stress, dehydration, a diet heavy in processed food, poor sleep, and everyday toxin exposure from our environment.

Toxins are dramatic on their own. They completely congest the lymphatic drainage system, plugging it up faster in today’s toxic world. Toxins are in food additives and preservatives, and in our air and water.

Effects of deep lymphatic system detox

Here’s the reward for sticking with me this far: This isn’t a life sentence. Unlike a lot of the individual diagnoses these symptoms get filed under, lymphatic congestion is addressable. It’s plumbing. Plumbing can be unclogged.

For one thing, I lost 65 pounds and reversed a mountain of my own symptoms once I understood this and started actually decongesting my system instead of chasing every symptom as its own separate fire. I have had clients with epilepsy (night seizures), MD, and cancer who have reversed their diseases quite substantially. In the case of my client with epilepsy, he has been free of night seizures for 12 years. Other prominent naturopaths, some I know and others I don’t, love lymphology.

Celebrities such as Tony Robbins comment positively on rebounding, which is a key cornerstone or piece of any lymphologist’s deep detox program, not just the one I offer. A lymphologist is a rare breed. Ever seen stuff like this as I speak of?

How to decongest your lymphatic system

Rebounding, hydration, deep breathing, clean eating, manual lymphatic work, other detox and lymphatic system practices: these all move that stagnant fluid and let the system do what it’s built to do.

The point of this article isn’t to tell you to throw out your diagnosis. It’s to ask a different question before you do anything else: Is my plumbing backed up somewhere, and if I clear it, does the smoke alarm stop going off?

Questions on your lymphatic system?

Things you do not know about it. That’s the question I built my whole practice around. If it’s got you curious too, that’s exactly the reaction I was hoping for.
