Joseannie Martinez

Author, Advocate

Diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of sixteen, Martinez faced challenges that reshaped her understanding of health, identity, and resilience. What began as a difficult and isolating journey soon evolved into a deep passion for storytelling, self-advocacy, and community support.

From her earliest days navigating the realities of seizures, medications, and uncertainty, she imagined a future in which she could transform her experiences into meaningful tools for children facing similar struggles. That vision—rooted in empathy and determination—later became the foundation of her work as an author and advocate.

In 2022, Martinez published her debut children’s book, "Lucky Feels Fuzzy", a heartfelt story centered on a character with epilepsy. Drawing directly from her personal journey, the book helps young readers recognize, describe, and communicate their symptoms in ways that foster self-confidence and understanding. By featuring vibrantly colored cats as characters, Martinez emphasizes diversity, inclusivity, and the reality that epilepsy can affect all kinds of individuals—human or otherwise.

Building on the impact of her first book, Martinez later released her second title, "Lucky's First EEG". This companion story introduces young readers to the experience of undergoing an EEG, a common but often intimidating medical procedure for people with epilepsy. By demystifying the process through playful storytelling and accessible explanations, Martinez equips children and families with knowledge that reduces fear and encourages open dialogue with healthcare providers. The book further reinforces her mission: helping children feel seen, supported, and empowered through every stage of their medical journey.

Beyond her writing, Martinez has become an active voice within the epilepsy community. She created an online support space dedicated to connecting individuals, parents, caregivers, and newly diagnosed patients. Through educational posts, shared stories, Q&A discussions, and peer encouragement, she fosters a welcoming environment grounded in authenticity and compassion. Her digital community has grown into a resource hub where people can learn about self-advocacy, seizure safety, emotional wellness, and the everyday realities of living with epilepsy.

Martinez continues to expand her work as both a storyteller and advocate. Whether through her books, online presence, or public outreach, she strives to amplify conversations around epilepsy, reduce stigma, and empower young readers to understand their conditions without fear. Her commitment to educating and supporting others reflects the very journey that shaped her life—turning vulnerability into strength and transforming her personal story into a guiding light for families around the world.
