  • Rose Sexton, End of Life Doula, Registered Nurse & Author, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine

Rose Sexton has spent more than forty decades as a nurse, drawn almost from the beginning to the edges of life, the places where people are most vulnerable, most themselves, and most in need of someone who will stay in the room. She is a palliative care nurse and End of Life Doula based in Victoria, Australia, where she has built a practice grounded in the belief that dying is not a medical failure but a human experience that deserves honesty, presence, and care. She works with individuals and families navigating end-of-life, helping them find their way through terrain most of us would rather not look at until we have no choice. But Rose has never been content to do this work quietly at the bedside and leave it there. She is also a performer, singer, actor, musician, and over the years she has come to understand that the arts and the death space are not separate territories. They speak the same language. She has brought them together deliberately, using theatre, music and humour to get communities talking about mortality before crisis forces the issue. The response, consistently, is that once people are given permission to talk about death, they won't shut up. She is a mother of three and has lived and travelled widely, experiences that have shaped both her understanding of what matters and her ability to meet people wherever they are. The Bird and Bee (Balboa Press, October 2026) is her debut book, a dual-voice memoir about her relationship with Bill Walsh, a guitarist, yoga teacher, and philosopher who was also her soulmate. Bill died in June 2019 after a second encounter with melanoma. Using cretive non-fiction, they together tell a story about love, dying, music, and what it means to stay present for another person all the way to the end. The book is not a grief memoir. It is an argument for a different relationship with death, and with life. Rose is currently developing a body of work that brings these threads together: writing, speaking, performing, and advocating for death literacy in Australian healthcare and in the broader community. Everything, as she puts it, is harnessed. • Katrina Batey, Anxious Children Parent Coach, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine

Katrina Batey is a former primary school teacher and Deputy Head with nearly twenty years’ experience in education. After the birth of her second child, she left teaching and moved with her family to Sweden, where her focus shifted toward children’s mental health and wellbeing. During this time, she completed a Master’s degree in the Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health at King’s College London, graduating with distinction, and qualified as a Mental Health and Wellbeing Coach. Around this period, Katrina’s own parenting journey took an unexpected turn when it became clear that her eldest daughter was experiencing significant anxiety. She struggled to speak or respond to people outside her immediate family and, after returning to England and starting school, she was diagnosed with selective mutism, an anxiety disorder affecting approximately 1 in 140 children. Like many children with anxiety, her daughter also experienced multiple overlapping fears. Navigating this journey was challenging both practically and emotionally. Katrina experienced first-hand how isolating and overwhelming it can feel to parent an anxious child, particularly when you are trying to support them while managing your own worry and exhaustion. This personal experience would ultimately shape her professional path. Initially, Katrina began coaching parents to support their own emotional wellbeing. However, she quickly recognised a common theme. Parents did not just want to feel better themselves; they wanted clear, effective ways to help their children. This insight led her to focus on practical, evidence-based approaches that empower parents to make meaningful changes. Through her research, Katrina discovered S.P.A.C.E. (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), a validated, parent-led anxiety treatment programme developed by Dr Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center. SPACE places parents at the heart of change, equipping them with tools to respond differently to anxiety and reduce unhelpful accommodations. The result is a shift that benefits both parent and child, creating lasting change and resilience for the future. Today, Katrina works with parents using SPACE alongside a range of other evidence-based techniques. She supports families facing both mild and more complex anxiety challenges, including those involving neurodivergence. Her greatest passion is early intervention, particularly for children up to the age of 11, helping families build strong foundations before the increased pressures of adolescence. DO I QUALIFY? Katrina Batey Anxious Children Parent Coach Katrina Batey is a former primary school teacher and Deputy Head with nearly twenty years’ experience in education.
