  • Michael D’aguiar , Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine

The Life and Legacy of Michael D’Aguiar: A Journey Through Martial Arts, Mental Health, and Transformation   Early Years: A Seed Planted in Curiosity Michael D’Aguiar’s story begins in southern England, where he was born into a world that would later shape his dual passions for martial arts and mental health advocacy. Growing up, Michael was an active child, drawn to sports like football, which offered him an outlet for his energy and competitive spirit. Yet beneath this athletic exterior lay a restless mind, one that would later reveal itself to be shaped by undiagnosed ADHD—a condition that fueled both his tenacity and his struggles. It wasn’t until adulthood that Michael would fully understand this aspect of himself, but its influence was evident early on in his relentless drive and curiosity.   The spark for his martial arts journey ignited in an unexpected moment: watching a televised fight with his father. The bout featured Genki Sudo defeating the towering Butterbean on Eurosport, a clash of skill against size that captivated Michael’s imagination. At the time, he had no martial arts experience, but the spectacle stirred something deep within him—a desire to conquer fear and test his limits. This moment marked the genesis of a path that would intertwine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and a profound commitment to understanding the human psyche.   The Mats Beckon: Entering the World of BJJ and MMA Michael’s entry into BJJ was unconventional. With no prior martial arts background, he stepped onto the mats driven not by tradition but by a personal challenge: to face his fear of fighting head-on. What began as a test of courage quickly evolved into a lifelong passion. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with its emphasis on technique over brute strength, resonated with Michael’s analytical mind and adaptable nature. He found a home in the gi, the traditional uniform of BJJ, and began training with a fervor that would define his journey.   His progression in BJJ was swift and impressive. Michael competed on some of the sport’s most prestigious stages—Polaris and Grapplefest—where he showcased his growing mastery of grappling. He claimed NAGA belts and British gold medals, each victory a testament to his dedication. Yet it wasn’t just the accolades that fueled him; it was the transformative power of the mats. “BJJ has helped me more than BJJ will ever know,” he would later reflect, a sentiment that underscored the sport’s role as both a physical and emotional anchor.   Parallel to his BJJ journey, Michael ventured into MMA, a realm that demanded versatility and resilience. Fighting on platforms like BAMMA, broadcast on Channel 5, he tested his skills in the cage, blending striking and grappling into a cohesive fighting style. His success extended beyond his own bouts—he coached a team of fighters, guiding them to victories that mirrored his own. These experiences honed not only his technical prowess but also his ability to inspire and lead, skills that would later prove invaluable in other arenas of his life.   Despite his achievements, Michael’s path wasn’t without obstacles. His undiagnosed ADHD, which he navigated through university while earning a degree in English and Journalism, brought moments of chaos and self-doubt. Yet it also gifted him with a unique perspective—an ability to hyper-focus on his passions and adapt to adversity. BJJ and MMA became his proving grounds, where he turned challenges into strengths.   A Calling Beyond the Mats: Trauma and SEMH Schools While Michael’s martial arts career flourished, another calling emerged—one rooted in service and understanding. His professional journey took him into the challenging environments of trauma-specialized and SEMH schools in southern England. These institutions catered to children with complex behavioral and emotional needs, often shaped by histories of trauma. For Michael, this work was more than a job; it was a revelation.   Working with these young people ignited his interest in trauma and its profound effects on the brain. He witnessed firsthand how unprocessed pain could manifest as aggression, withdrawal, or defiance—behaviors that echoed the struggles he’d seen in himself and others. The mats had taught him discipline and resilience; now, the classroom offered lessons in empathy and patience. He became a bridge between structure and compassion, using his physical presence and calm demeanor to connect with students others might have written off.   This experience deepened his curiosity about mental health, leading him to a state-of-the-art mental health facility for adolescents. Here, he gained invaluable insights into the complexities of the psyche—how trauma rewires neural pathways, how resilience can be nurtured, and how healing requires both science and soul. It was a turning point that set him on a new trajectory: training to become a psychotherapist.   Psychotherapy and Mental Health Coaching: A New Frontier By February 23, 2025, Michael had completed his first year of psychotherapy training, a milestone that marked his evolution from practitioner to healer. This pursuit wasn’t a departure from his martial arts roots but an extension of them. BJJ had taught him the power of presence—being fully in the moment, attuned to an opponent’s movements. Psychotherapy demanded the same: listening deeply, responding intuitively, and guiding others through their struggles.   As a mental health coach, Michael found a unique synergy between his martial arts background and his therapeutic work. The discipline of BJJ—showing up consistently, embracing failure, and refining techniques—mirrored the principles he instilled in his clients. He drew parallels between rolling on the mats and navigating life’s challenges: both required adaptability, self-awareness, and the courage to keep going. “I’ve seen people transform into something else when they step onto the mats,” he observed, a phenomenon he now sought to replicate in his coaching.   His work in trauma-specialized and SEMH schools informed his approach. He understood that many of his clients—whether students, athletes, or everyday individuals—carried invisible wounds. BJJ had been his own therapy, a way to process fear and build confidence; now, he used it as a tool to help others. He introduced grappling as a metaphor for resilience: just as you can escape a chokehold with the right technique, you can navigate life’s pressures with the right mindset.   A Father, a Teacher, a Legacy Amid his professional and personal growth, Michael’s greatest pride lay in his family—particularly his 7 year-old son. Fatherhood brought a new dimension to his journey, blending his roles as a martial artist, coach, and healer. Teaching his son the values of dedication and hard work through BJJ became a source of immense joy. Watching the boy grow, mirroring his own curiosity and tenacity, reinforced Michael’s belief in the power of positive habits.   On the mats, Michael continued to compete and evolve, particularly in the gi, where he embraced new challenges with the same fervor that had driven him from the start. Off the mats, he built a legacy as Professor Michael D’Aguiar—a title earned not just through belts and medals but through the lives he touched. His story was one of transformation: from a fearful novice to a seasoned grappler, from a teacher in tough schools to a psychotherapist-in-training, from a fighter to a father.   The Intersection of Mind and Body Michael’s journey reveals a profound truth: the mind and body are inseparable. BJJ and MMA gave him a physical language for resilience; his work in mental health gave him a framework to articulate it. As a coach, he bridged these worlds, showing others that strength isn’t just muscle—it’s the courage to face your fears, the patience to heal, and the wisdom to guide others. His ADHD, once a silent struggle, became a superpower, fueling his ability to connect with those who felt misunderstood.   Looking ahead, Michael remains committed to growth. He envisions a future where he continues to compete, refine his psychotherapy skills, and expand his impact as a mental health coach. His story is a testament to the healing power of BJJ—not just for himself, but for anyone willing to step onto the mats and confront their own. • Nadia Wallin, Intuition & Money Healing Teacher, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine

"So there is this thing called intuition? My inner guidance system... So you say that, if I learn how to listen to my intuition, my life will become better?".   It sounded very abstract in Nadia's ears, after several years in the academic field of studying Public Law and English Literature. She had been working very hard as a teenager, caring for the horses in the stable, her siblings and her friends around her. Unknowingly, she lived from codependency and people pleasing, far away from her own intuition and her heart's desires.   In 2011 the pressure of being there for everyone became too much, and she decided to leave Sweden. She wanted to find out who she was in a new context. The travels brought her to new people, both in Europe and the Caribbean, where she somehow faced similar challenges, concluding that everywhere she went, there she was.   In 2014 she was back in Sweden, this time as a single mother to two boys, bringing her baby to university to finish her studies with the goal to create a stable base for her new family.   In this new mirror of life she could see how her childhood wounds would play out in her parenting, and it motivated her to radically change herself so that the patterns wouldn't move on to her boys. This time, not by changing countries, but by actually starting from the inside.   During her travels she had heard elderly women say that "Money is just energy", and without knowing how to make sense of it Nadia decided to figure it out. It led her to the path of intuitive personal power, energy healing, psychic awareness and a career as a Debt Advisor.   Today she has taught intuition to big groups and individuals, she has had thousands of conversations about money to a broad range of people. She's a popular guest on TV, radio and podcast and she published her book Älskade Pengar, Beloved Money in 2024. People come to her to understand their intuition, to deepen their spiritual practice of having life as their mirror and to create a better relationship with their money, both private and in business.   She loves to break down spiritual concepts to make them tangible, yet she is known for going deep and often provoking resistance and blind spots that the audience has previously avoided. She brings both compassion and a sense of humor in to her transformative experiences, even though they are connected with serious topics.   Lastly, a lot of spiritual practices has become mainstream, there is still a lot of shame and fear of being judged as not intelligent or serious enough. Nadia Wallin wants liberate your inner Rich Witch, allowing you to be YOU no matter what that looks like while enjoying your magic, your money and your life. DO I QUALIFY? Nadia Wallin Intuition & Money Healing Teacher "So there is this thing called intuition? • Arzoo Bashir, Empathetic Strategist & Visionary Leader, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine

Wish. Hope. Desire. These words are not only the meaning behind Arzoo's name but the essence of her journey - one defined by relentless perseverance, resilience, and the power of transformation.   Born into a less privileged background, Arzoo grew up facing challenges that could have crushed her spirit. Instead of succumbing, she harnessed her struggle as fuel, channeling them into ambition and drive.   Arzoo was raised by her grandparents and whilst immensely thankful for the love and life they provided her, she faced the weight of cultural norms and expectations. Overachieve. Excel academically. Become a doctor/dentist. Eventually, get married.   Being a woman who chose sports on the other hand, was often frowned upon. But Arzoo found a solace in basketball - it was a battle to even attend evening practices, many times having to claim she was studying to avoid conflict.   She studied an impressive 5 A-Levels at college. Her passion lay in critical thinking and humanities, but science was what she was pushed to study. Instead of choosing, she did them all - obtained qualifications in Philosophy, English Literature, Politics, Chemistry and Biology. When it came time to choose a university, Arzoo faced yet another crossroads. She selected the University of Hertfordshire - not only for her Integrated Masters in Optometry, as her family believed, but secretly for the opportunity to compete at Premier level in England on their Women's Division One Basketball Programme. Her dedication and perserverance paid off, as she reached her goal of gaining a spot on the team as a Shooting Guard.   Just as her hard work and sacrifice began to bear fruit, life decided to test her strength further, as she dislocated her knee and partially tore her meniscus. However, due to even having the opportunity to make the team and compete, she continued playing and training whilst injured, which led to a major ACL tear and completely torn meniscus.   At the time she felt like she had lost everything. There went the spot she worked so hard for, her independence, her jobs, her social life, even her University eventually dismissed her from the course forcing her out. The foundations she grafted to build, shattered completely. Faced with unimaginable loss and depression, Arzoo found her faith in God and made the brave choice to rise. Whilst immobile, she used her time at home to completely engross herself in coaching, leadership and basketball - she obtained her coaching qualifications online and delved into the art of eyelash and beauty treatments.   1032 days later, Arzoo had three surgeries, an unimaginable amount of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. But could finally walk without aid again. Before the injuries, she worked for LUSH Cosmetics, a UK-based company that sells luxury handmade cosmetics and personal care products globally. Her manager at the time kindly reached out to her to see how she was doing after seeing videos on her Instagram of her walking again and extended the offer of coming back to work for the company. She took it. In September 2023, she returned to work for the company she loved so dearly. She achieved huge accomplishments in her short time back, progressed to supervisor within a month, created a strategy for the store to have their best Christmas financially.   By January she had found the store broke records, created an impression with the retailers in the company and found her love in retail; making people's day brighter, elevating customer experience and leading by example. She then went on to represent LUSH at a UK&I level in a retail management capacity traveling to different stores weekly to make an impact and leave a legacy. With this, she worked with the company's Global training team as a host and facilitator, helping roll out training and events. LUSH gave her the first step in her journey to rise. It has become a massive part of shaping who she is today. The next steps in her journey led her to pursue more of her basketball passion - she worked closely with the man who introduced her to the sport, Clive Allen. He taught her all he knew and allowed her to assist him in games. He told her 'If you're that good, it will find you.' which led to her trusting the process.   Her global reach within basketball began here. She worked with Clive as an assistant coach for the first pro-league tournament in Gibraltar. Then became the team manager for the City of Birmingham Rockets Division One Men, wherein she formed a bond with their Head Coach from Portugal on the foundation of being two individuals who do the right things for the right reasons, doing all they can to help people. He invited her as the Media lead for his basketball camps in Portugal and saw phenomenal success with reach and engagement. More recently she has become the International Team Manager for FIMBA GB, the 18 senior teams in England - involving the operations and organisation of the World Championships to be held in Switzerland later this year.   With this, she re-enrolled at University for a degree in Pharmaceutical Science, became a sports scholar and represents the Womens Basketball Team and has moved into another retail management role at a bigger company, closer to home. This is so she can spend some time launching her own businesses in Beauty and Videography Swish by AB and OneClickProdigy,   From the depths of adversity, she rebuilt a life even greater than she could imagine, guided by God and a mindset that 'Today is All I Have".   Through pain and persistence, she transformed into a force of inspiration, excelling across multiple roles - lash technician, videographer, basketball coach, international team manager, retail manager and basketball operations specialist. She owes it all to the incredible people God has blessed her with and is eternally grateful.   Arzoo's story is a testament to hope realised, wishes fulfilled, and desires turned into action. It is a powerful reminder that even the greatest setbacks can lead to the most profound comebacks. Now, as an Executive Contributor for Brainz Magazine, she is sharing her journey and insights with the World, hoping to inspire others to rise from their challenges, find their purpose, and unlock their limitless potential.   Arzoo Bashir Executive Contributor Empathetic Strategist & Visionary Leader Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise.
