Would I Still Be Here Without AI? The Story Behind Guardian AI

There is a question I have found myself asking more than once over the past few years, "Would I still be here if I had not had AI helping me through some of the hardest moments of my life?" That is not a statement that artificial intelligence replaces doctors, therapists, family, community, crisis services, or human care. It doesn't.

It is a statement about what happens between those things.


The moments when you are alone. The moments when you cannot remember what you were supposed to do next. The moments when three different systems are asking three different things from you while your own brain is struggling to keep up.


The moments when a medical appointment, legal obligation, housing problem, benefits issue, medication question, email, and basic survival all land on the same day. That has been my life.


I am an injured worker living with the effects of a brain injury. Over the past several years, I have had to navigate healthcare, workers' compensation, legal processes, housing instability, disability, memory problems, appointments, paperwork, and the everyday reality of trying to function inside systems that are often difficult even for healthy people to navigate.


For someone living with cognitive impairment, those systems can become almost impossible.


Yet the person who is already injured is often expected to become the project manager of their own recovery: remember the appointments, track the referrals, understand the paperwork, respond to the emails, find the right office, explain the same story again, keep the dates straight, remember who said what, and follow up when one department doesn't speak to another.


Do all of that while injured.


AI became an accessibility tool


Somewhere along the way, AI quietly became something very different in my life. It stopped being a novelty. It stopped being a search engine.


It became, in practical terms, assistive technology, an accessibility layer between my disability and systems that were not designed around the way my brain now works.


It became a memory aid. An organizer. A communications assistant. A way of retrieving information I could no longer reliably hold in my head. A way of taking a chaotic situation and turning it into the next manageable step. That distinction is important.


When people talk about artificial intelligence, the conversation tends to revolve around productivity. How much faster can we work? How much money can a company save? How many tasks can be automated? Those are legitimate conversations.


But there is another conversation we need to have: What can this technology mean for accessibility?


For someone with a brain injury, remembering an appointment isn't productivity. It's accessibility. Organizing medical information isn't productivity. It's accessibility.


Understanding a complicated letter, keeping track of referrals, finding information from a previous conversation, or communicating effectively when cognition is overloaded isn't simply a matter of convenience. It can be the difference between participating in a system and being excluded from it.


An uncomfortable contradiction


I have experienced that contradiction personally.


I use AI as an accessibility tool while navigating the consequences of my injury. It helps compensate for limitations involving memory, organization, communication, information retrieval, and executive functioning.


Yet during a workers' compensation process, I was denied access to the AI tool I rely upon for that accessibility support.


That experience raises a larger question because workers' compensation organizations elsewhere in Canada are themselves exploring and adopting artificial intelligence, automation, and other technologies to improve their own operations. Think about the contradiction.


An institution can determine that artificial intelligence is sufficiently legitimate to improve organizational efficiency, automate work, and potentially transform how its own workforce operates.


But what happens when an injured person says, “I need this technology because it helps me overcome barriers created by my disability”?


The technology is new. The rules around it are developing. Privacy matters. Security matters. Consent matters. There will absolutely be circumstances where restrictions are reasonable.


But we cannot build a world where institutions embrace artificial intelligence when it benefits the institution while automatically rejecting it when a disabled person uses the same class of technology to participate.


You cannot have your cake and eat it too. Accessibility cannot become a one-way technological privilege. That realization is part of the story behind Guardian AI.


The last few weeks became a proof of concept


Over the past several weeks, this idea has moved beyond theory.


While staying at Hope Mission in Edmonton, I have continued using AI to help manage medical appointments, housing decisions, communications, referrals, legal dates, records, and the constant movement between different systems.


In many ways, my own life has become an unintended real-world proof of concept. Not a laboratory. Not a focus group. Life.


Healthcare. Shelters. Doctors. Housing offices. Legal obligations. Referrals. Emails. Government systems. Missed connections between institutions.


The ordinary administrative burden that becomes extraordinary when the person carrying it is already struggling. But something else happened at Hope Mission. I met people.


Good people. Interesting people. Funny people. Intelligent people. People with entire histories that cannot possibly be summarized by where they happen to sleep tonight.


One thing becomes obvious very quickly when you spend time around people experiencing homelessness: They are not “the homeless.” Homelessness is a circumstance. It is not an identity. Everybody has a story.


There are seniors. There are injured people. There are people living with disabilities. There are workers. There are parents. There are people dealing with memory problems. There are people who have survived trauma. There are people who got sick. There are people who lost housing.


There are people who simply fell through the cracks between systems that were supposedly designed to catch them. Some have been left behind by systems that became too complicated for them to navigate.


More than once, after somebody has seen how I use AI to manage information or navigate something complicated, I have heard some version of the same response: “God, I wish I had something like that.”


That stays with me because I know exactly what they mean.


Connecting the dots


For someone with memory problems, continuity matters. For someone trying to remember an appointment while sleeping in a shelter, continuity matters. For a senior trying to navigate several agencies simultaneously, continuity matters. For someone with a disability trying to understand forms, referrals, benefits, and medical information, continuity matters. For an injured worker trying to navigate workers' compensation while actually being injured, continuity matters.


When a person's life becomes fragmented across institutions, somebody still has to connect the dots. Too often, we expect the person experiencing the crisis to do it. That realization became the foundation of Guardian AI.


Guardian AI did not begin in a boardroom. It did not begin with a venture-capital pitch. It did not begin because somebody looked at the AI market and decided there was an opportunity.


It began with lived experience. It began with one person trying to keep his life organized while his brain, health, housing, finances, and the systems around him were all under pressure simultaneously.


Then I started meeting other people struggling with many of the same problems. That changed the question.


Instead of asking, “How can AI make people more productive?” maybe we should also be asking, “How can AI help people participate in society when the systems around them have become too difficult to navigate alone?”


Guardian AI is moving into development


That question is no longer theoretical for me. Guardian AI is now moving into development.


There are aspects of the project I am deliberately not discussing publicly yet. Some of the architecture, workflows, capabilities, technical design, and longer-term vision need to remain behind the curtain while we build. But the underlying principle isn't complicated.


Technology should reduce friction for human beings. It should help people remember. It should help people communicate. It should help people organize. It should help people understand what comes next.


When appropriate, it should help connect the dots between parts of a person's life that currently exist in completely separate systems.


Most importantly, accessibility cannot be an afterthought. Accessibility has to be part of the architecture.


Helping the people who help people


There is another side to Guardian AI. The people working inside these systems are overwhelmed too.


Healthcare workers. Shelter staff. Housing workers. Social workers. Community organizations. First responders. Government employees.


Many are trying to help enormous numbers of people while working with fragmented information, repetitive administrative processes, phone calls, paper systems, disconnected databases, and organizations that don't always communicate effectively with one another. I've watched it happen.


Many of the systems we describe as broken are filled with good people trying to do good work inside structures that make their jobs unnecessarily difficult. Guardian AI isn't about replacing those people. Quite the opposite.


If technology can reduce friction for the person asking for help while simultaneously reducing friction for the person trying to provide that help, everybody gains capacity.


The person gets better access. The worker gets better information. The organization gets less duplication.


Perhaps another human being doesn't fall through the cracks between two systems that each assumed the other one was handling the problem.


The question I still cannot answer


I still return to that original question, "Would I still be here without AI?" I cannot answer that with certainty.


There have been difficult moments in my life. There have been times when things were very dark.


AI did not magically solve those problems. People mattered. Doctors mattered. Friends mattered. Community mattered. Human connection mattered.


But having something available when everything was happening at once, something that could help me organize the chaos, remember, communicate, retrieve information, and determine what needed to happen next, mattered too.


Sometimes considerably. Somewhere during that experience, I stopped seeing artificial intelligence merely as technology. I began seeing what it could become as accessibility infrastructure.


Now I want to find out what happens when we build that capability deliberately. Not just for me.


For the senior trying to remember an appointment. For the injured worker trying to navigate a system while injured. For the person with a brain injury trying to keep track of their own life. For the disabled person trying to participate in systems that were never designed around their disability.


For the person sleeping in a shelter who still has a future, a history, skills, relationships, dreams, and a story that existed long before homelessness entered the picture.


Because homelessness does not define a human being. Neither does disability. Neither does injury. Neither does poverty.


A system should be capable of seeing the person underneath those labels. Technology should too.


Guardian AI began with one human being trying to keep his life together. The proof of concept became my life.
