These are the three fundamental principles that I use because I work remotely, and I am "Crushing It" on a daily basis. Firstly, I have set an Intention to work from home and be fully focused, purposeful, and invested in successfully working from home. My action is to create a dedicated working space for use. My behavior is to dress appropriately as if I am going to an office.

If we come from the perspective that our home is our safe space to relax and enjoy our time and family away from the stresses and stressors of work, then:

1. Have a dedicated office or working space.

Do not work from every room in the house, ie. Bedroom, Bathroom, Dining Room, Lounge, Kitchen, etc. because you contaminate these areas with work and there is no clear boundary for you to relax.

If you do not have a proper office, decide where you will work, get some masking tape, and tape a boundary around where you work. Make that the office or working space and all working takes place in that space.

Be considerate of yourself and others by taking note of all the communal and shared spaces where others in your family relax, make noise, and don't use those spaces.

2. Get dressed for work.

When we get dressed for any occasion we are being intentional and considered with what we want to achieve. Like we want to look and smell nice when we go out on a date. We consider our appearance, clothes, style, etc... It is intentional.

It is the same with work. Dress for that occasion. Not just the top half, go the whole hog. I do.

Remember to dress for success…it is a mindset, and hanging out in pajamas is about relaxing and resting.

3. Leave the house at least once a day.

Many of us forget when working alone at home how important the social aspect of being physically around people is. We need it energetically to recharge. It also breaks us out of the monotony of being at home all day.

Occasionally, before I start work, I will get dressed for work, pop out to get a coffee, and Danish as if I am commuting to work. I will come home to my home office and start to work.

Other times, I will go out for lunch or take a mid-morning or mid-afternoon coffee break as my calendar and schedule dictate.
