Beverly K. Johnson, Health and Wellness Coach

Who is Beverly K. Johnson?

I often describe myself as a woman who learned that transformation isn’t just about changing your body – it’s about reclaiming your life.

I’m a Certified Health Coach, speaker, Army veteran, NASA professional, and founder of The EPIC Academy. For years, I helped women pursue fitness goals, but I eventually realized most of them weren’t struggling due to a lack of information. They were struggling because they were exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected from themselves, and carrying the weight of everyone else’s expectations.

Today, my work helps women create wellness from the inside out. Whether I’m coaching, speaking, or writing, my mission is to help women reconnect with their strength, honor their season of life, and remember that it’s never too late to begin again.

What made you create The EPIC Academy, and how does it serve women 40+ in a unique way?

The EPIC Academy was born from the realization that women over 40 are often overlooked or underserved in traditional fitness and wellness spaces.

Conventional programs focus on calories, workouts, and sheer willpower – but many women in midlife are navigating hormonal shifts, evolving identities, increased responsibilities, grief, stress, and burnout. They’re doing all of this while still showing up for everyone around them.

I wanted to create a space where women finally felt seen. At The EPIC Academy, we don’t start with the scale. We start with the woman. Our programs focus on sustainable habits, confidence, nourishment, mindset, movement, personal boundaries, and self-care practices that fit real life. We’re not asking women to become someone new – we’re helping them reconnect with the powerful woman they’ve always been beneath the noise.

What is the biggest mindset shift that allows your clients to move from “stuck” to transformed?

The biggest shift happens when a woman stops seeing herself as a problem to fix. Many of the women I work with arrive believing they’ve failed because they gained weight, lost motivation, or no longer respond to the habits that once worked in their twenties or thirties. The truth is: they’re not failing. Their bodies, lives, and priorities have changed.

Transformation begins when they let go of self-judgment and shift into self-awareness. When they stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and start asking, “What do I need right now?” everything changes.

What are the most common weight‑loss traps, and how do you help women overcome them sustainably?

The biggest traps are perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, and the pursuit of quick fixes. Many women believe they have to follow the perfect plan, cut out all their favorite foods, or overhaul their entire life overnight. When that level of intensity inevitably becomes unsustainable, they blame themselves.

I teach women that consistency beats perfection every single time. Real change comes from small, repeatable actions – ones that can survive busy schedules, long workweeks, stressful seasons, and real-life demands. Sustainable wellness isn’t built in ideal conditions. It’s built in everyday moments.

How do you tailor fitness and nutrition strategies for busy women who feel like they’ve tried everything?

I start by listening – really listening. Most women don’t need another generic plan. They need strategies that are realistic, flexible, and aligned with the season of life they’re in.

I consider their schedule, responsibilities, stress levels, energy, lifestyle, and what they’ve already tried. For one woman, success may start with strength training. For another, it might begin with more sleep, stress management, increased protein intake, or simply eating consistently throughout the day. Wellness should support your life – not add pressure.

You talk about wellness starting with the spirit. How does that show up in your coaching?

Wellness is so much more than nutrition and exercise. A woman can follow the perfect plan and still feel unfulfilled if she’s disconnected from her purpose, identity, or values. When I talk about the spirit, I mean the inner alignment that allows a woman to live authentically.

In coaching, we explore the beliefs, stories, and habits that shape behavior. We create space for reflection, gratitude, intention, and self-compassion. Because true wellness isn’t just about feeling better physically – it’s about feeling whole, grounded, and aligned from the inside out.

What does a typical “EPIC” client journey look like from day one to transformation?

From the moment a woman joins, she quickly realizes this is not a judgment zone. We begin by assessing her mental, physical, and emotional state. Together, we set goals that feel realistic and meaningful, then create a roadmap that supports her lifestyle. Throughout her journey, she receives coaching, education, accountability, encouragement, and tools she can apply immediately. The transformation almost always extends far beyond physical changes.

Women report increased confidence, more energy, healthier boundaries, reduced stress, and a deeper sense of self. They don’t just transform – they evolve.

How do you build accountability and real action – not just motivation – in your programs?

Motivation is wonderful – but unreliable. Lasting transformation happens when systems and habits replace motivation. I help women create structure: routines, checkpoints, accountability methods, and reminders that keep them grounded even when life gets busy.

We celebrate progress instead of perfection. We focus on what’s working rather than obsessing over what isn’t. My goal isn’t for women to rely on me forever it’s to help them build trust in themselves.

What are the top three signs a woman is ready to say “yes” to her transformation?

  1. She’s tired of starting over.

  2. She realizes the strategies that worked years ago no longer work.

  3. She’s finally ready to stop putting herself last.

The women who thrive in this work aren’t always the most motivated – they’re simply the readiest. Ready to choose themselves. Ready to shift. Ready to believe they deserve more.

How do you help women maintain their results long‑term, not just lose weight?

We build a lifestyle – not a temporary routine. If a strategy isn’t sustainable, it isn’t transformational. Together, we focus on habits, mindset, boundaries, stress management, nourishment, movement, and self-awareness. These are skills they carry with them long after coaching ends.

True long-term success isn’t about staying perfect. It’s about knowing how to return to yourself when life gets messy.

When you speak on stage or virtually, what is the one message you want every woman to leave with?

I want every woman to know you are not behind. So many women believe they missed their moment or should be further along by now. I understand that feeling because I’ve lived it. But what I’ve learned is that some seasons aren’t setbacks – they’re preparation.

Your story isn’t over because you’ve experienced heartbreak, health challenges, reinvention, or delays. Every woman has another chapter inside her, and that chapter can be the most meaningful one yet.
