The Earth is three-fourths water. Water is essential for our bodies, even more than food. The body can go without food longer than it can without water. When fasting from food, it is imperative to drink water. Studies show that drinking eight glasses of water a day throughout your life could reduce the risk of heart failure 25 years later.

Here are other benefits:

  1. Waste removal. Drinking water helps remove waste from the body. It is helpful if you are fighting a cold.

  2. Regulation of body temperature. The best thing to drink after a workout is water. If you are dealing with a fever, drinking water will help alleviate the fever.

  3. Joint lubrication. Just as a car needs oil to function, the body needs water to do the same.

  4. Morning benefits. There are benefits to drinking water first thing in the morning before eating breakfast or drinking other beverages. It increases your energy, boosts your metabolism, helps ease aches and pains, gives more radiant skin, and fights toxins. One plan that I offer to my clients involves drinking water upon rising.

  5. Drinking water at night. It is okay to drink a little water at night. There may be times when you wake up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty or dehydrated. If you do a cardiovascular activity at night, it helps you refuel. Like with anything, do not overindulge. If you are constantly getting up to use the bathroom at night, it will interrupt your sleep.

  6. Room temperature or ice water? Some people prefer to drink ice water, and others prefer to drink it at room temperature. I like drinking ice water after working out and at room temperature other times. Either way, water is essential for the body.

  7. Other sources of water. Fruits and vegetables like cabbage, spinach, watermelon, and oranges contain water. Seltzer water is a substitute if you wish to stop drinking soda. It gives you carbonation without added sugars and artificial flavors and colors.
