I was recently on a cycling cruise in Norway. The food, the boat, the scenery, the cabin, and the laundry service, all were 5-star. And I like a nice place to stay as much as the rest of us! The cycling was also beautiful and gave me the chance to experience places I’ll likely never visit again. Yet, if I’m asked if I’d take the same company’s trip again, my answer is a very definitive no. It hit me (on a bike ride, of course): not my people.

Cyclist waves near a large cruise ship docked by a scenic mountain lake under cloudy skies. The ship's name "Star Pride" is visible.

I’ve had similar experiences in growing my business. I value early bedtimes and training mornings over wine-filled business evening events, as a general rule. I love being around people who are growth-oriented and see what’s possible, rather than ‘shoulding’ all over me or forcing me to play small. So, from time spent with older friends, to family, to colleagues, to fellow business owners, to where I spend my holidays, I’m constantly examining if I’m in the right room.

Would I take advice from this person?

Do we share the same values?

Have they been where I want to go?

Is this interaction allowing me energetically to show up as my best?

These are some of the questions I ask myself on a regular basis. And it’s not an insult to anyone I’m surrounded by.

We met some lovely friends on our cycling cruise. I have some amazing people in my life. But I’m constantly discerning whom I ask for advice or tell about my big goals every time I want to move to the next level.

In an endurance event, you need a support crew who will push you with encouragement and tough love when things get hard, not tell you to stop. They must be able to see the difference between danger and the normal pain of the process. It’s the same in business, leadership, and chasing big goals in life. You need people around you who will help you understand when to push through, when to change pace, and if needed, when to pivot.

Once you become clear on YOUR unique vision, this is how you’ll get there.
