When parents are looking for an Orton-Gillingham practitioner for their struggling reader, they are often in crisis mode. As a parent…

Mother helping daughter with homework

You’ve tried everything you thought would help your child read and write, only to realize it was either a waste of time, ineffective, detrimental to your child’s self-esteem, or all of the above. You are in panic mode, looking for a quick fix or hoping a few sessions in the summer will give them the boost they need. While most parents understand that helping their child is never a quick fix, something is triggered when you realize how behind your child is and you feel guilt and shame around the “what ifs”. The lack of knowledge about what your child needs to progress and the emotional, physical, and financial investment required can be overwhelming.

As a mother and a special educator who has worked with hundreds of families over the past 13 years, both in the classroom and one-on-one, I know that getting the proper support for your child is priceless. Finding the right practitioner to help your child read and write comes at a significant cost.

However, this investment results in your child gaining confidence, empowerment, and the ability to achieve more than you ever imagined.

During discovery calls with parents, one of the first questions I get, after discussing my rates, is, "When will my child get better?" or, "After about ten sessions, will they be reading on grade level?" My answer is always the same: there is no guarantee that I can get your child reading at grade level.

However, I can meet your child where they are and give them what they need to build foundational skills, which they will then master and apply as they continue to learn. The journey of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD isn’t just about learning to read and write; it’s about building skills to apply rules and open up more opportunities.

The first stage of my literacy intervention framework is the comprehensive analysis. This entails about 7-10 sessions, or 4-6 weeks of getting to know your child’s areas of strength and weaknesses, understanding the gaps that need to be filled, and finding that sweet spot between challenging and giving them wins to build their stamina. If you think about it, seven sessions are equivalent to two school days. You wouldn’t expect your child to be a proficient reader and writer after two days in school.

Things you need to know about working with a skilled literacy practitioner

  1. Stay Calm and Trust the Process: Don’t let your anxiety and dysregulated nervous system get the best of you. You sought a professional and will get the support and guidance necessary every step of the way. This truly takes time.

  2. Patience is Key: Miracles don’t happen overnight. There is a process, and when it occurs in the proper order, things will start to click for you and your child.

  3. Understanding Learning Disabilities: Learning about your child’s specific learning disabilities is a journey. Take it one step at a time.

  4. Investing in the Future: Getting the proper intervention and individualized instruction is an emotional and financial investment that will be worth it.

While the journey of helping your child overcome dyslexia and dysgraphia can be daunting, it is a path worth taking. With the proper support, patience, and persistence, your child can develop the skills they need to succeed and thrive. Book a discovery call to learn more about my framework and process.
