There is real science and true power behind the positive self-talk we engage in with ourselves. As a psychotherapist who utilizes methods of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I have seen firsthand the tremendous changes that can happen in clients who practice positive self-talk. Positive self-talk is a transformative tool that can significantly improve your emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

The science

Scientific research has shown that positive self-talk can influence and change brain neural pathways, enhancing your ability to process and manage stress. When you engage in positive self-talk, your brain releases neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which improve your overall mood and reduce anxiety.

How to begin utilizing positive self-talk

Recognize negative self-talk patterns

Awareness and insight into your daily negative thought patterns are key. Begin paying attention to your inner dialogue and identify recurring negative thoughts. Journaling can help you track these patterns. I encourage my clients to practice “catching those negative thoughts,” making it easier to replace them with positive self-talk.

Replace negative self-talk phrases

Swap phrases like “I can’t do this” with “I’ve got this” or “I will try my best.” Repeat positive affirmations daily, such as “I am capable,” “I am worthy,” “I am resilient,” or “I can do this.” Create your own positive self-talk mantras. Over time, you’ll notice these affirmations reshaping your beliefs and having a more positive impact. With practice, you’ll naturally challenge negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.

Practice self-kindness

When you make a mistake, remind yourself that you are human and that failure helps you grow. Treat yourself with empathy and compassion. Often, we are our own harshest critics, be kinder to yourself, especially during life’s challenges.

Engage in consistent practice

Positive self-talk requires patience and consistency. Don’t give up. Each time you replace negativity with affirmations, acknowledge your progress and encourage yourself to keep going.

Conclusion

Positive self-talk can help you feel more optimistic about the future and empower you to conquer life’s goals. It is a profound tool that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Begin transforming your negative thoughts into positive self-talk. Start practicing today, you’ve got this!
