Beliefs are powerful; they are the assumptions you hold to be accurate and, in the process, shape your life.

"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you are tight." Henry Ford

Are you one of those people who declares to themselves and others what they don't want in life and always wonder why they keep getting more of it? Let me tell you a little story that produced a profound shift in perception about beliefs.

It was March 2006 when I attended a weekend workshop that focused on balancing the pillars in your life. When the topic of beliefs came up, a young woman was invited onto the stage and asked what one of her limiting beliefs was. She told the presenter, and he wrote it on an 8' x 11" x ¾" wood board. He then instructed her to break through it using the heel of the palm of her hand.

Nervously, she prepared and hit the board. It didn't break. He told her to try again. She did, with the same result. This went on until, finally, on the seventh attempt, she broke through. The outcome for all to realize—it could be done!

We were then instructed to write a limiting belief we wanted to delete on the same type of board. At the time, I was a leader in a direct sales company for 14 years and had only developed one leader—duplicating myself—while many had promoted four, five, six, and more.

I believed I sucked at leadership development; I mean, one in 14 years? So, I wrote down, "I can't influence people towards leadership," on one side of the board, and "I influence others towards leadership." on the other.

There were more than 400 people in attendance, and even with all the volunteers holding the boards and encouraging each person to break through it, it was time-consuming. As the minutes ticked past, I could feel my heart beating out of my chest and my mouth growing drier and drier—the result of nervous anticipation.

What if I couldn't break it?

When it was my turn, I stepped up and gave the board to the volunteer and took a long deep breath. I focused on the person behind the board, and with all my enthusiasm, I hit the board, and it snapped! I broke through. I broke through that limiting belief.

I can't explain the feeling that emanated from the experience other than to say it was ethereal, and it lasted the entire weekend.

Three days later, on March 6th, I was informed that I would have a new mentor leader with the company.

She lived 600 miles away, so we spoke on the phone. She suggested a few changes in my work schedule and flew in several weeks later to help me host an event in April.

I found people were attracted to me, a lot of people. I sponsored eight and, on May 1st, promoted two leaders. I questioned myself: Did I work more hours? No. Did I give more away? No. Did I work harder? No. Then, what made the difference?

The distinction was I no longer believed that I sucked at leadership development. Instead of repelling people, I was attracting them. Even though I was doing the same things, with a little tweak, the energy level in me shifted tremendously and produced different results.

On August 1st, I developed my third leader, and on September 1st, my fourth and fifth, which made me a Regional Leader, earning a trip to Boston with others who were Regional Vice-Presidents. One leader in 14 years versus five leaders in five months.

That's how powerful beliefs are!

Getting rid of, deleting, or dis-creating limiting beliefs changes your life and everything. It's necessary to walk through the fear as I did, to break through to the other side.
