Your shadow isn't trying to hurt you, it's trying to belong, it's trying to be heard, it's trying to come home, and that is the truth I want to begin with, because so much of what we are taught about the parts of ourselves we call shadow starts from the wrong premise entirely.

We are taught to fear it, to fix it, to keep it managed and out of view, as though the parts of us that live in the dark are somehow lesser, somehow dangerous, somehow proof that we are not as evolved, not as healed, not as spiritual as we would like to believe ourselves to be. So we spend years, sometimes lifetimes, trying to outrun our own darkness, chasing the light instead, believing that if we can just stay positive enough, just vibrate high enough, just focus on love and gratitude and gentleness, the shadow will stop asking to be seen, but it never does. It cannot, because it was never trying to sabotage you in the first place. It was only ever trying to find its way back to you, the way anything exiled eventually finds its way back to the place it was exiled from, patiently, quietly, again and again, for as long as it takes.
So before we go further, I want to offer you the same question I open this work with every time, because it is the doorway into everything we are about to explore together. I want you to actually sit with it rather than read past it the way we so often read past the questions that matter most, which is simply this. What parts of yourself have you hidden to be loved, accepted, or safe? What do you keep in the dark, not because it is shameful, but because somewhere along the way you learned that showing it would cost you too much? Let that question sit with you as you move through the rest of this, because what we are exploring here is not abstract, it is specific, and somewhere in you, you already know some of its names, even if you have never said them aloud, even to yourself, even in the privacy of your own mind late at night when there is no one left to perform for and nothing left to prove.
What is shadow, really, and why is it your gold
Shadow is not evil, and that is a truth worth holding onto because it undoes so much of what we have been taught. Shadow is unintegrated truth, it is energy we were taught to exile. Shadow can look like anger you weren't allowed to feel, power you were punished for expressing, a desire you were told was shameful, grief you had to suppress, even magic you were made to doubt. Shadow forms wherever love was withheld and you had to dim yourself to survive, but these parts of you were never gone, they have only been waiting, quietly whispering, sacred the entire time.
Here is what so often gets missed when we speak about shadow work, and it deserves its own moment rather than a passing mention, because it changes the entire way you go looking for what needs to be reclaimed. Not everything you exiled was painful, some of it was radiant, a gift you were made to shrink because it made someone else uncomfortable, a brilliance you learned to downplay so you wouldn't outshine the room, a knowing, an intuition, a leadership, a magnetism, that got filed away in the same dark place as the anger and the grief, simply because it was too much for the people around you to hold, too bright for a room that had only ever known dim light.
This is often called the golden shadow, and it hides for the very same reason the painful parts hide, because somewhere along the way, being fully yourself felt unsafe. Perhaps you were the child who was told to be smaller, quieter, less intense, less much, and so you learned to fold your own brightness away before anyone else had the chance to flinch at it. Perhaps you watched what happened when someone else's gift made a parent feel threatened, or a sibling feel eclipsed, or a partner feel outshone, and you made a quiet, unconscious decision that your own gift would be safer left in the dark than risked in the light. That decision may have kept you safe once, but it is not keeping you safe now, it is only keeping you small.
So when you go looking in the dark for what needs to be reclaimed, don't be surprised if what you find there is not only a wound. Sometimes what you find is power you were never permitted to carry, a gift that has been waiting this entire time for you to finally decide it is allowed to take up space.
The four stages of coming home
When we stop running from the darkness, the soul has the opportunity to be lit up, to first acknowledge that parts of us were kept hidden. This is a process, and it moves in a particular order. First, acknowledgment, simply admitting the part exists. Then, acceptance, which stops the arguing with what is there. Then, integration, the weaving of it back into who you are. Then, a feeling of a new version of yourself beginning to be formed, not a better one, none of that perfective labelling, simply a new version, an identity beginning to evolve.
What I would love for you to understand about this final stage is what being seen actually means once you arrive there, because it was never about someone else's acknowledgment. It doesn't matter if someone tells you how amazing you look, that was never the goal. It is about you showing up for yourself, seeing yourself, hearing yourself, feeling yourself, so completely that it becomes impossible for the people around you not to feel that frequency, that energy you are exuding, the quiet certainty of I know who I am, I know what I stand for, and I am fully here in this experience, the light, the dark, and everything in between.
The truth reveals
The question worth sitting with is this. What truth is buried inside the parts of us we've learned to hide? The truth of who you're becoming, the truth of your desires. Ultimately, what is buried inside you that you've learned to hide is the part of you that actually knows what you came here to do.
Whether you call that purpose or mission, that is what is buried inside you, a truth waiting to be heard, to be seen, to be loved, to be accepted, to be integrated. This is why a spiritual path that focuses only on the light and ignores the shadow will never let you land your learnings in a way that is integrated and evolving. You will always sit in the ether, all love and light, quick to judge other people for their shadow, and that is not what the truest of souls came here to do. We came here to share unconditional love once we have learned it and experienced it, and we can only do that once we have unconditional love for ourselves. Without that, it becomes very easy to judge other people's light and shadow, when really we are only looking at what we ourselves are pushing aside, what we are not wanting to see.
What we don't own, we project
What we don't own, we often project. We see in others what we fear in ourselves, we judge what we secretly carry and avoid what mirrors us. But projection is an invitation, it says, look here, there is something you have disowned, and it's time to reclaim it. Shadow work doesn't mean you're bad, it means you're ready to be whole, to be real, to be free.
You can feel projection at work in the small moments long before you can name it, in the flash of irritation at a colleague's confidence that seems to arrive from nowhere, in the discomfort you feel watching someone else receive without apologising for it, take up space without shrinking first, say no without softening it into something smaller. None of these reactions are really about the other person, however convincing they feel in the moment and however much your mind will happily construct a story about why they are justified. They are about the part of you that has not yet been permitted to do the same thing, and the other person is not doing anything wrong. They are simply standing close enough to something you buried for you to finally notice it is still alive.
This is why projection, uncomfortable as it feels, is one of the shadow's most generous gifts, because it does the finding for you. You do not have to go searching in the dark, wondering what needs to be reclaimed. Life will keep placing it directly in front of you, again and again, in the form of other people, until you are finally ready to stop reacting to them and start listening to what they are showing you about yourself.
What judgment reveals about where we're ready to come home
Judgment reveals that there is an old program still running through your system, and it moves in levels. The first level is judgment of others based on what society has said is bad, and even the judgment you feel when someone simply makes you feel something, a sense of unease, a resistance you can't quite name. That physical, emotional reaction is an invitation to understand why there is resistance to what that person is doing, and this is not about people maliciously hurting others, that is different entirely. Judgment is about having a physical, emotional, or verbal reaction to someone in which, intentionally or not, you are shaming them for their opinion, their choices, how they look, or how they feel. When there is that resistance, it is often because somewhere in your life, someone made you feel a particular way that was shameful, and now this person has held up a mirror to say, you feel this too.
Then there is a second, deeper level. Once you realise your resistance exists because you've experienced the same thing yourself, just labelled differently, what is being revealed is an old program running through a system you were unaware of, one that you have not yet dealt with. Most human beings feel a quiet shame after judging someone else harshly, even if it doesn't surface in the moment. That ache afterwards is the deeper layer asking you to come home, to look at the old programming, the inherited rules, the strict boxes you were taught things had to fit inside. You don't have to like everybody, you don't have to agree with everybody, but that judgment that shoots out first, spoken or not, is holding up a mirror because there is something in you yet to be uncovered, or something you know is there and are simply scared to face. The universe itself is made up of light and darkness. It sits in itself as purity, as pure love, and still holds both, and this is what you are here to learn and reveal about yourself, the light and the dark, for you are one with the universe, and all of that light has layers, but ultimately has love. That is what is waiting for you, to come home to that love, deep in your soul, for yourself and for others.
How integration transforms the way we move through the world
When you welcome the shadow, you reclaim your energy, your voice, your soul's full range. You stop leaking power through shame, you stop fragmenting yourself for approval, and you become sovereign. Integration doesn't mean acting on every shadow impulse, it means understanding where it comes from and responding with awareness, and that awareness is what real power actually looks like, what real maturity and real embodiment actually look like, far more than any performance of having it all together ever could.
Integration doesn't happen all at once, it comes in stages, alongside our evolution. When something resonates, when there has been growth with it, we begin to integrate those teachings and land them in our everyday experience, and when we can land that learning, it transforms how we operate with other people, the decisions we make, the discernment we bring to what's presented to us. So often people learn and do all the work, trying to live in the light, and still struggle to land what they learned at a retreat, in a ceremony, in a class, in any teaching at all. Integration doesn't mean becoming everything you were ever taught, it means understanding what needs to be integrated for you, how you embody it, because when it resonates and aligns with where you are and where you're going, that transformation raises your frequency. People begin to feel it, a heaviness that's gone, a lightness that draws them in, not for performance but for the wisdom, the energy, the healing, the insight now genuinely landed in you.
We can only impart knowledge once we've integrated it, otherwise, we're only regurgitating what we learned, and it won't land for the other person either. It will just feel like noise, something they listen to but don't really hear, because it isn't believed all the way through. When you integrate your teachings, your shadow, your lessons, you speak with reverence, and from that place you move with more impact in the world, with grace, with kindness, with a sense of inner power, not power used to manipulate others, but the quiet power of being at peace, of being at one with your creator, your universe, your mother earth. When you feel that, you don't even need to speak of what you've learned, it is simply how you move through the world that moves others.
You already know which part of yourself you have been keeping at a distance. You have known for some time, even if you have not said it aloud, even if you have dressed it up in other language, kept yourself busy enough not to have to sit with it directly, or told yourself a more palatable story about why it stays where it is. You already know, somewhere beneath the fear of what it might mean to finally let it in, that it was never trying to punish you, that it was never your enemy, but has always been your teacher, your protector, and the portal through which your power was always meant to return to you.
A note from me, and an invitation
If something in this piece raised a question you have been carrying, about a part of yourself you have been keeping in the dark, a gift you have been shrinking, or a reaction in yourself you have never quite been able to explain, send it to me. Each month, I choose questions from readers and channel a response in this column. You will not be named, you will simply be heard, and through you, others sitting with the same thing will be heard too.
Send your question here. If at some point you want to work with me more directly, you can find ways to do so here, where there are spiritual advisory sessions, classes, books, and more available when you are ready, and not before.
