High-achieving leaders often hide their burnout behind polished facades, sacrificing their well-being for success. In this article, Laurie Hawkins, creator of The Reset Code, reveals the hidden crisis of burnout in leadership and offers a powerful solution: micro moments of recalibration. Discover how resetting your nervous system can help you lead with clarity, energy, and sustainability, without sacrificing ambition. Read on to learn how to transform your leadership approach and prevent burnout.

Four people at a cafe table, talking and smiling. One uses a tablet, another has a laptop. Bright and casual setting with wooden decor.

The hidden crisis behind the boardroom door

They look the part: polished, driven, successful. Yet if you sit across from today’s high-achieving leaders long enough, you’ll see it: the micro-pauses, the unfocused eyes, the weight behind the smile.

I’ve had hundreds of conversations with executives, CEOs, and entrepreneurs who confess the same truth:

“I’m exhausted, and no one can know. I’ve built too much to admit I’m breaking.”

This isn’t a failure of ambition. It’s a failure of the operating system we’ve been running on.

The old playbook is outdated

For decades, leadership was measured by hustle: inbox zero, endless growth targets, and 5 am routines. The implicit rule was: if you’re tired, push harder.

But here’s the truth: burnout isn’t proof of commitment; it’s proof of a broken system.

We now know what relentless pressure does to the nervous system. It erodes clarity. It hijacks energy. It breaks down communication. Ultimately, it costs organizations millions in lost innovation, turnover, and disengagement.

As I often say to clients:

“Every KPI improves when the leader’s nervous system is regulated. Clarity returns. Energy regenerates. Stress drops. Communication sharpens. The entire culture shifts.”

So why are we still clinging to a leadership model that quietly destroys the very humans upholding it?

Nanny-cam moments of burnout

You might recognize yourself in these:

  • Rewording an email for 20 minutes that no one will read twice.

  • Eating lunch in 15 minutes at your desk because “there’s no time.”

  • Agreeing to another coffee chat you don’t want, then resenting the lost energy.

  • Glazing over mid-meeting and realizing you didn’t hear a word for three minutes.

If any of those hit too close, it’s not because you’re weak. It’s because you’re leaking energy everywhere.

The call for leadership reset

We are living in what I call The Great Reset of Leadership.

The world doesn’t need leaders who can do more. The world needs leaders who can reset differently, who can recalibrate their nervous system, reconnect to their clarity, and lead from alignment instead of depletion.

This isn’t about abandoning ambition. It’s about anchoring it in truth and sustainability.

As I’ve said to many leaders behind closed doors:

“Burnout isn’t normal. It’s optional. You can choose another way.”

So, what does resetting look like?

Resetting isn’t another 30-day challenge or a 5 am alarm. It’s micro-moments of recalibration that create disproportionate impact:

  • A 60-second pause that turns spiraling overthinking into decisive clarity.

  • Returning the “emotional backpack” after a draining meeting so you don’t carry what isn’t yours.

  • A single breath with hand on heart before opening your phone, setting the tone for your entire day.

  • Declaring a confidence script that pulls you into the leader you’re here to be.

These are not productivity hacks. They’re nervous system resets. They’re what make sustainable leadership possible again.
