In a world where work-related accidents cause many injuries and deaths, a robust safety and health culture in the workplace is critical. World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an opportunity to highlight how important it is to build a culture with strategies that contribute to safer work environments. At Gutterglove®, we've made it our mission to ensure that our team members operate in settings that prioritize their well-being. Safety is not just a policy but a cornerstone of our operational ethos.

A recent International Labour Organization (ILO) report, A Call for Safer and Healthier Working Environments, found nearly three million people die every year due to work-related accidents and diseases, an increase of more than 5 percent compared to 2015, according to new ILO estimates. Work accidents account for approximately 330,000 deaths, according to the analysis.

The toll underscores the persistent challenges in safeguarding the health and safety of workers globally.

The Top Safety and Health Concerns at Gutterglove

At Gutterglove, our primary safety and health concerns revolve around ensuring that all team members are not only well-versed in proper safety practices but are also fully equipped with the necessary tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform their roles safely. We go beyond the minimum requirements by providing additional safety tools that enhance comfort and ensure peace of mind. This approach has instilled a strong safety culture within our team, making safety a foundational aspect of our daily operations.

Educating Team Members and Enhancing Safety Awareness

To foster a deep-rooted safety culture, Gutterglove promotes several educational strategies. We conduct monthly safety meetings and have established a safety committee that plays a pivotal role in our factories. New team members are introduced to our safety-first philosophy right from their onboarding process. This includes detailed discussions about the importance of safety, the availability and location of safety materials and equipment, and strict adherence to wearing appropriate PPE.

Strategies for a Safer Environment

Our policies and the physical layout of our facilities reflect our commitment to safety. For instance, we ensure that PPE is readily accessible to all team members, fostering an environment where safety tools are available whenever needed. Moreover, we encourage open communication, urging team members to immediately report any safety concerns, hazards, or issues. This openness not only prevents accidents but also reinforces the importance of safety in our organizational psyche.

Beyond Safety: Fostering Overall Team Member Well-being

Understanding that team members' well-being extends beyond physical safety, Gutterglove has integrated comprehensive support systems into our workplace culture. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers various resources to help team members navigate personal and professional challenges. This includes free therapy sessions, online courses, and webinars, all at no cost to the team members. These programs also extend support to family members, ensuring that our team can maintain balance at work and in their personal lives.

We also provide competitive PTO programs in addition to a company-paid week off in December to help team members maintain a healthy work-life balance and allow them to focus on matters most.

Gutterglove believes that what matters most to our team members, matters to us. To that end, we provide access to Matthew Kelly’s inspired Dream Program, which seeks to help team members achieve personal life goals by offering the support and resources to help attain them.

The Impact of Our Safety and Health Strategies

The effectiveness of our strategies is evident in our track record. For example, our California factory celebrated nearly three years without a workplace accident—a testament to our proactive safety measures. Moreover, despite prioritizing safety over speed, our productivity levels have reached all-time highs. This balance demonstrates that team members are more engaged and productive when they feel safe and supported.

Safety as a Way of Life

At Gutterglove, a safe workplace is the foundation of a healthy workforce. By investing in comprehensive safety education, open communication, accessible safety tools, and overall well-being support, we enhance our operational efficiency and ensure that our team members feel valued and protected. This World Day for Safety and Health at Work, let us remind ourselves of the critical role that workplace safety plays in building sustainable businesses and communities. After all, at Gutterglove, safety isn't just a protocol—it's a way of life.
