Let’s face it: we all know life is a journey. Just like any journey, there are going to be unexpected roadblocks along the way. Sometimes the roadblock is obvious. A job opportunity falls through. A relationship changes. A business idea doesn't work out. Plans suddenly have to change. Other times, the obstacle is something happening inside us: fear, self-doubt, disappointment or the belief that perhaps we aren't capable of getting where we want to go after all.

When we encounter a roadblock, we have a choice. Do we stop? Do we turn around? Or do we look for another way forward? The people who eventually reach their desired destination aren't necessarily the ones who had the easiest journey. They're often the ones who became more determined because of the resistance they encountered along the way. They faced things that could have broken them. Instead, they allowed those experiences to strengthen them. That's what resilience looks like.

When the road doesn't go as planned

Roadblocks can look very different depending on where you are in life.

A career roadblock: Maybe you didn't get the promotion you wanted or a job opportunity disappeared. It can feel like the end of the road, but perhaps it's actually an invitation to explore a different path.

A personal roadblock: Maybe a relationship ends or circumstances change in a way you didn't expect. The path forward may look completely different, but different doesn't necessarily mean worse.

A dream that takes longer than expected: Sometimes the biggest obstacle is simply time. We want something now, and when it doesn't happen quickly, we begin questioning whether it's meant to happen at all.

A roadblock doesn't necessarily mean stop. Sometimes it means reroute.

3 ways to keep moving forward

1. Stop and assess, but don't give up: When you hit an obstacle, it's perfectly okay to pause. In fact, sometimes stopping for a moment is exactly what you need. The important thing is not to confuse a pause with quitting.

Action step: When you encounter a setback, ask yourself: Is this truly the end of the road, or do I simply need to find another route? Give yourself permission to regroup before deciding what's next.

2. Let resistance fuel you: Resistance can be frustrating, but it can also reveal how badly you want something. Think about a time when someone told you that you couldn't do something. Didn't a little part of you want to prove them wrong? That determination can be powerful.

Action step: Think about the obstacle you're facing right now. Instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?" ask: "What can this challenge teach me, and how can I use it to become stronger?" Let the challenge become fuel rather than an anchor.

3. Keep your eyes on the destination: When the journey gets difficult, it's easy to become so focused on the obstacle that you forget where you're going. Your destination doesn't disappear simply because the road became difficult.

Action step: Write down the goal you're working toward and, beneath it, write one reason it matters to you.

Put it somewhere you'll see it regularly. When the journey gets tough, let that reminder reconnect you with your why.

The wise woman says

Life isn't a straight line from where you are to where you want to be. There will be detours. There will be wrong turns. There will be unexpected construction, closed roads and moments when you wonder whether you're ever going to arrive.

But here's the thing about a roadblock: it doesn't get to decide your destination. You do. You may need to change your route. You may need to slow down. You may even need to take a completely different road than the one you originally imagined. But don't let an obstacle convince you that you can't get there.

Let the resistance strengthen you. Let the challenges teach you. Let the setbacks sharpen your determination. Then lift your head, keep your eyes on where you're going and move forward like the champion you are.

The road may not always be easy, but you don't have to turn around.
