If you've been there, you know the road to reinventing oneself is hardly a straight journey. It is a winding course for many women in business, especially for those who work in corporate environments, are spiritually inclined, and are mothers. But what if these turns are not diversions but milestones toward who we really are?

The crossroads of career ambition, spiritual calling, and motherhood

In 2018, life as I knew it was beginning to shift. As a corporate marketing manager by day and a spiritual consultant by night, I was juggling two demanding worlds. Then came the life-altering decision to adopt three children as a single mother. Suddenly, the evening client sessions were no longer sustainable.

This was not just a career shift, it was an identity transformation. I had to reconcile my professional ambitions with my new role as a mother. The pressure to maintain the status quo was immense, but the need for change was undeniable.

Embracing the emotional labor of reinvention

Reinvention is an emotional journey that involves more than updating your LinkedIn page. It entails navigating the unknown, facing worries of inadequacy, and mourning the loss of your previous identity. Though frequently unseen, this emotional work has a profound effect.

Managing stress, uncertainty, and cultural expectations is a key aspect of emotional labor during career transitions, particularly for women in male-dominated professions, according to a study by the WomenTech Network. Sustainable progress requires acknowledging and resolving this emotional cost.

Letting go to grow

The need to let go was one of the most challenging things I have ever learned. I had to let go of the notion that my value was based on my job title and that success was possible only through unrelenting work. It took self-compassion and grace to get through this process.

Adopting a more versatile online company strategy gave me the flexibility to match my work with my family and ideals. In addition to growing my clientele, this change enabled me to provide more genuine service.

The power of self-permission

The revelation that I did not require approval from others to change my direction was undoubtedly the most freeing. It was empowering to permit myself to change course. It confirmed that, despite not using a conventional route, my journey was legitimate and my own.

Before making significant changes, women in business often seek approval from others. However, genuine empowerment starts inward. Significant change can result from following our instincts and respecting our needs.

Reinvention as a return to self

Reinvention is not about becoming someone new, it is about returning to who you truly are. It is less about chasing a new version of success and more about remembering your essence, the part of you that existed before job titles, expectations, and needing to prove your worth. It is peeling back the layers of societal "shoulds" to reconnect with your soul's "yes." And here is the kicker, that version of you, rooted, honest, a little raw and wildly intuitive, is more than enough.

When I stopped trying to fit the mold of what a successful woman in business was supposed to look like, I found freedom. Not just time freedom or location independence, although yes, those are sweet perks of an online business, but a deeper, more grounded sense of freedom that came from finally letting my authenticity take the lead. I did not need to wear the metaphorical blazer if I did not want to. I could lead with softness and still be powerful. I could be spiritual and strategic. I could mother, mentor, and monetize, all from a place that felt like home.

This pivot was not just a business decision, it was a soul decision. It led to a business model that reflects my values, supports my family, and gives me space to be the truest version of myself, with my flaws, gifts, and all. Reinvention did not take me off course. It brought me back to center.

Actionable takeaways

  • Acknowledge the emotional labor: Recognize that career transitions involve emotional work. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions.

  • Give yourself grace: Understand that it is okay to let go of previous roles and identities. Growth often requires release.

  • Trust your intuition: Your inner compass is a powerful tool. Listen to it when making decisions about your career and life.

  • Seek support: Surround yourself with a community that understands and supports your journey.

  • Redefine success: Align your definition of success with your values and personal fulfillment, not societal standards.

  • And, most importantly, be kind to yourself.

If you are ready to let go of the status quo and build a sustainable, purpose-led business that trades burnout for breakthrough, that is exactly what my coaching program "In[Her] Soul Return" is designed to support. Take a moment to explore if this path is the next best step for you.
