Six years ago, my strategy for making the world better was to remove the abuse and pain in people’s interactions by showing people how their behaviour is wrong. To that end, I was a certified trainer in a personality testing programme. (The specific one isn’t important as all of them tend to categorise everything in four categories.)

I used LinkedIn to reach the rest of the world. One of my posts spoke about the importance of leaders and parents. While I received a lot of support and interaction, one person asked me two questions: Colin, what is your definition of leader? What is YOUR definition of parent?

The obvious thing to do was answer his questions since I was hosting the post and it is the normal thing to do. I gave my answers to both questions. His response was to show me where my definitions were contradictory and then he shared his definitions. However, rather than put me down, he affirmed me for having answered the questions.

It turns out, he had begun posting a free book on Mental Health on LinkedIn. His weekly chapters would result in the book being completed in one year. His passion is leadership and in conjunction with beginning his posts in May 2019, he was asking every person who posted about Leadership, what their definition was. To his surprise, he was more than two months into this process and no one had answered him! This includes famous influencers.

When he told me I was the only person to share my definitions, I didn’t believe him. He challenged me to ask anyone who posts on Leadership to share their definition so I could find out for myself. Well, it didn’t take more than a dozen interactions for me to realise he was right!

That is how my friendship with John Lenhart began.

John has degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering that he uses to model everything! His model for the connection between the human brain and nose was declared a trade secret by the company he worked for in the United States, so he wasn’t allowed to share it with anyone. However, after he left that company, he did his own research to create the only non-contradictory model for the mind and brain and it is mind-blowing.

Most people believe we are our conscious brain. That is why psychology, consultants, and bosses all try to change behaviour by telling you what to do and give you a reason. John’s research shows that only 10% of our brain works this way. The other 90% is our unconscious brain and it is the source of all our energy and our behaviour.

Think of a car. You are only in direct control of 10% of the car: steering wheel, brake, accelerator, radio, windscreen wipers, etc. However, all of the behaviour that everyone sees and all the energy of the car comes from the 90% you are not in direct control, such as the engine and the electrics. The real way to change the behaviour of a human is unconsciously!

During our first meeting, John told me my personality testing approach was hurting people. He explained that every personality test is based on The Four Temperaments, a 2000-year-old theory by Hippocrates, who said that every time he saw someone was unbalanced, it was due to too much or too little blood, bile, black bile, or phlegm. Notice, this only applies to people who are unbalanced!

John showed me that personality tests help us not cause unbalanced people to trigger and hurt themselves or others. While that is beneficial, this will never help the individual have energy. John believes when it comes to humans, we can dissolve our problems by focusing people on what gives them energy rather than dragging them down by focusing them on what they did or could do wrong. This is especially true with the mind of the individual! Knowing and seeing this, I immediately closed down my business and ceased trading as my intention was purely to help people long-term, not papering over the cracks.

You are the driver of the car, which is your brain. Think of how you could be able to tell the difference from the outside between a new driver and an experienced driver driving the same car. Their intent and how they go about doing what they are doing is due to the mind and not the brain. This is your uniqueness!

John calls this the Intangible Driver® and everyone has a WHY (the benefit they want others to experience) and the HOW (how they go about delivering the benefit). It turns out, when you are able to help others experience the benefit that is according to your uniqueness, you gain energy! Let’s put this all together!

What is YOUR definition of a Leader? (Please take a moment to write it down or state it out loud before moving on.)

John said the reason I answered the question is I have a growth-mindset. A growth-mindset does not mean I want to grow. Everyone wants to grow and will grow when their circumstances get uncomfortable enough. John says a growth-mindset is proven by how quickly a person admits they are wrong when they are proven wrong. This is why people don’t share their definitions: they don’t want to find out they are wrong.

A leader facilitates the purpose and progress of another.

A boss facilitates their own purpose and progress at the expense of others.

Notice, the effect of being a leader is you are a servant. There is no such thing as servant leadership, unless you can explain non-servant leadership.

When you are operating in your uniqueness, you are delivering a benefit to others that facilitates their purpose and progress…and you get energy!

Our vision for a better world is people finding out and growing in their uniqueness so they can demonstrate leadership to the rest of the world!

I wasn’t trying to hurt people with personality tests. John says what makes me a good person is how I responded to being shown I was wrong. Ultimately, I want others to benefit, more than I want to appear right.

Since our first interaction, John and I have created a YouTube channel with over 60 hours of content. We have both written and published books that allow people to question themselves and understand themselves. John has Flowcess platform that has helped thousands of people understand their uniqueness and that of the people they interact with, this is the only known platform in the world to do so. I have created the Your Inner Voice application and it allows people to read their intuition and give them unconscious direction in life according to their own lifestyle and circumstances. Both are far more advanced than a personality test and reach the mind and soul of the user!
