Last week my wife Taisha wasn't feeling well, so I decided to take her to the emergency room. She told me that her body ached, and with every swallow, it felt like knives digging aggressively into her throat. I was concerned for her health.

Once I got her in the emergency room, the doctors conducted a series of tests. They weren't sure what her condition was right away, but they did tell me that her white blood cell count was above average, which is common when the body is fighting an infection. After a few hours of waiting, one of the nurses informed me that it was a strong case of strep. It's a devastating condition, but I'm grateful it wasn't life-threatening.
The recovery process is ongoing; however, she feels better each day. Once she regained a basic energy level, we sat down together and talked about the experience. I explained how her white blood cells were fighting to keep her safe from the infection. At that moment, her first response was, "How many things in this world fight for me the way my body does; and how do I repay it?" Then she said out loud, "I need to treat my body better!"
My wife admitted that she hasn't always prioritized her health, but she is praising for the experience of pain. Unhealthy choices in her life have often resulted from external challenges associated with being a mom who puts everyone else first. She was amazed by the concept that the body and self (a person's essential being that distinguishes them from others) are two different entities. The body works hard to keep us alive regardless of how well we care for it.
Instead of looking at her flaws, she looks in the mirror every day and tells her body, thank you for being a gift. She recently made a vow to value her body better. I'm personally amazed by her strength, and I appreciate the energy she shares with our two children and me without skipping a beat.
Even though getting sick with strep or catching a cold is not necessarily a direct reflection of bad lifestyle habits. It's crucial to understand that taking care of your body is vital! A couple of skills to start with can be simple: adding one or two more fresh fruits and vegetables to each meal and fifteen minutes of daily exercise can improve your lifestyle significantly.
The body has natural wiring of inner and outer strength. Still, when you exercise the essential fundamentals of self-care, its potential to be even more excellent in overcoming internal or external resistance. Treat your body like someone else you are responsible for overseeing. Count your bright spots in life and continually search for opportunities to be the better version of yourself.
