Every powerful leader has a moment that redefines their voice. For Black women in corporate spaces, that moment often comes not from a lack of brilliance, but from being overlooked despite it. In this empowering guide, seasoned HR strategist Che’ Blackmon shares the communication breakthrough that changed everything and introduces the POWER Framework, a proven system to help Black women lead boldly, speak strategically, and command every room with authenticity and impact.

"There is no agony like bearing an untold story inside you." – Zora Neale Hurston
The moment that changed everything for me as an HR Director
I was presenting our diversity strategy to the C-suite. Despite having the most comprehensive data and innovative solutions, I watched as my carefully crafted recommendations were met with polite nods until a white male colleague rephrased my exact points and suddenly received enthusiastic approval.
That day, I realized something profound: excellence alone isn't enough. How you communicate that excellence determines whether you lead the conversation or get talked over.
The communication reality for black women leaders
As Black women in corporate spaces, we navigate a complex communication landscape where our words are filtered through layers of bias before reaching their intended meaning. Research consistently shows we face "tone policing" and are labeled "aggressive" for the same behaviors praised in others.
But here's what I've learned from transforming organizational cultures across multiple industries: strategic communication isn't about changing who you are; it's about expanding how you express your authentic power.
The POWER framework: Your communication transformation system
After twenty-plus years of helping leaders unlock their potential, I've developed the POWER Framework specifically for Black women who refuse to shrink themselves to fit others' comfort zones.
P – Position with authority
Your preparation neutralizes bias. Before my most important board presentations, I would:
Research every decision-maker's priorities
Prepare data-driven responses to potential objections
Practice until my key messages flowed like second nature
Arrive early to claim physical space confidently
Pro Tip: Use phrases like "Based on the data..." and "My experience with similar situations suggests..." to establish credibility immediately.
O – Orchestrate your presence
Your voice is an instrument of influence. Master these techniques:
Speak at a measured pace that commands attention
Use strategic pauses for emphasis (count to three!)
End statements definitively, with no questioning uptones
Modulate volume for impact without triggering "aggressive" labels
W – Wield strategic storytelling
Stories bypass defensive filters and create emotional connections. I once shifted an entire leadership team's perspective on inclusive hiring by sharing a brief story about an overlooked candidate who became our top performer.
The IMPACT story structure:
Intention: Define your purpose
Message: Craft your core takeaway
Personal connection: Include authentic elements
Arc development: Structure your narrative
Cultural bridge: Build inclusive connections
Takeaway action: End with clear next steps
E – Execute difficult conversations
The GRACE Framework transforms challenging discussions:
Ground yourself emotionally
Reframe as collaborative problem-solving
Assert your perspective with facts
Control the narrative, stay issue-focused
End with clarity and documented outcomes
R – Radiate authentic adaptability
Code-switching becomes strategic flexibility when you:
Adjust your approach while maintaining your values
Speak different "languages" without losing your voice
Meet others where they are without abandoning where you stand
Real-world application: The promotion that almost wasn't
I'll never forget Sarah (name changed), a brilliant Black woman I coached who was repeatedly passed over for promotion. Despite stellar performance reviews, she remained invisible during leadership discussions.
We implemented the POWER Framework over 90 days:
She repositioned her achievements using strategic language
Practiced executive presence techniques until they felt natural
Developed compelling stories that showcased her unique value
Learned to navigate difficult conversations with confidence
The result? Not only did she secure the promotion, but she also negotiated a 23% salary increase and an expanded scope of responsibility.
Your next level communication toolkit
For executive presentations:
Lead with your key point, then support it with evidence
Use the "Rule of Three" for memorable messaging
Include diverse perspectives to show inclusive thinking
Close with clear calls to action
For networking situations:
Perfect your 60-second value proposition
Ask strategic questions that showcase your insight
Follow up with concrete value, articles, connections, solutions
Share the spotlight generously
For difficult conversations:
"I'd like to finish my point, then hear your perspective" (when interrupted)
"Thank you for reinforcing what I mentioned earlier..." (when your idea is repeated)
"My experience with [specific example] has shown..." (when authority is questioned)
