Dawn Bates, Writer, Author Coach and Publisher

Introduce yourself! Please tell us about you and your life, so we can get to know you better.

Well, before all the job titles and accolades I am a woman determined to bring about positive change in the world, then I am a ‘Crazy Mama’ of two young men and a fur baby girl, who are used to me singing and dancing all the time – when I am not writing, reading, walking, sailing and cooking… yep! I am that person who cannot sit still or keep quiet during a movie too!

What is your business name and how do you help your clients? The business name is Dawn Bates International (DBI) because there is no hiding, and it is a way of holding myself accountable to the highest standards possible.

At DBI we help our clients in several ways. Those who work with me on a 1:1 basis want to share ‘their story’, whether that is a memoir, autobiographical a biography of another person they admire; or a cause they wish to be an advocate for. We then expand on their success and influence to create change in the world through educational books and associated merchandise.

With those who choose to work through my distance learning courses, they are choosing to become a published author who wants to become business savvy and successful, rather just another ‘one book wonder, starving artist’ living on minimum wage – as is the case with most authors in the world today.

What would you like to achieve for yourself and your business in the future?

Personally, I am currently working towards my goal of receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature – which as you know is a lofty goal indeed, so there is plenty of work to be done! I’m also working towards completing my sailing Captaincy and my PhD in Human Rights and Social Justice, meaning everything I create needs to be aligned to assist me with all three of these goals.

For the business, it is my goal to reach 1 million readers of all the books I publish, and to provide 1 million writers and activists with the resources, expertise, products and services they need to help them achieve their author goals.

Who inspires you to be the best that you can be?

Honestly? I do, because I know who I am and what I want to achieve, and that makes me get out of bed each morning. Plus, my children inspire me to keep going. It’s a bit cliché, but they are going to inherit the business one day and so they need to see me lead by example and I want them to have something great to pass onto to their children too. What is your work inspired by?

Being bullied at school turned me into the author activist I am, and my travels around the world seeing and understanding the amount of injustice, corruption and bullying became the fuel for my fire. There is so much ignorance in the world and having lived and worked in 43 countries across 5 continents, I have seen a lot. As humans we have a lot to answer for, and all the problems in the world could be solved if we all educated ourselves with powerful literature and then harnessed the power of self-belief to live life with our full potential engaged.

Tell us about your greatest career achievement so far.

Being in love with the ‘work’ I have chosen to make money from I believe is my greatest achievement. I could have chosen to ‘do a job’ for the money, but I chose to build a business that inspires me and gifts me the freedom to learn, live life and inspires others. Accolades, awards, and titles are all very nice to have, but it is what we do with those that matter (says the woman going after the Nobel Prize for Literature, her captaincy and a Ph.D.!)

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?

The arrogance and snobbery within the industry, especially from those who think they are someone just because they either work for, have been published by or awarded an accolade by the Big Four publishers. Like I have always said to my two sons, “He who has the most toys still dies,” and “It isn’t the size of your wallet which counts, it the size of your heart that matters.”

Tell us about a pivotal moment in your life that brought you to where you are today.

Facing my own mortality with the birth of my second child was the catalyst for finally publishing my first memoir-based book Friday Bridge because I had been in the press, spoken on stages and positively impacted millions of lives through my work and activism.

I wrote that book whilst living through the Egyptian Uprising, and then when I returned to England, I was fed up with the incorrect narrative being espoused by the mainstream media, I then wrote my second book Walaahi in 7 days, which became an international bestseller on three continents 7 days later. That blew my mind – and here I am about to publish my 18th book with another 22 solo books already in the pipeline!
