At the highest levels of leadership, skills alone aren’t enough. True top performance comes from intentional design, balancing Awareness, Regulation, and Connection. Catherine Gallacher’s Leadership ARC™ combines neuroscience, narrative therapy, and executive experience to help leaders build trust, regulate under pressure, and inspire lasting success.

Why ARC™ matters for top performers

At the highest levels, leadership is not about the skills you can list on a CV. It is about the inner design that holds under pressure, builds trust, and delivers consistent performance.

That is why I created The Leadership ARC™, a framework for top performers who want top performance. It fuses neuroscience and narrative therapy with the lived realities of executive life.

Here is the truth: what gets you to the top will not keep you there. Only intentional design will.

“Every leader has an ARC: Awareness, Regulation, Connection. Ignore one, and performance cracks. Design them, and performance becomes inevitable.” – Catherine Gallacher™

The neuroscience of ARC™

  • Awareness: The prefrontal cortex is where insight, empathy, and strategic vision live. Without awareness, leaders default to amygdala-driven reactivity, fight, flight, or freeze.

  • Regulation: Stress floods the brain with cortisol, shutting down innovation. Leaders who master regulation activate oxytocin and dopamine, creating clarity, trust, and motivation.

  • Connection: Mirror neurons prove leadership is contagious. If you are aligned and connected, your team will catch it. If you are chaotic and fearful, they will catch that too.

“Your brain state is your leadership state. Lead your inner state first, or the rest collapses.” – Catherine Gallacher™

The narrative edge

Narrative therapy teaches us that the stories we live by determine the futures we design. In leadership, your inner story is louder than your outer strategy.

ARC™ challenges leaders to rewrite their scripts:

  • From “I must have all the answers” → “I create space for collective wisdom.”

  • From “I can’t afford to fail” → “I experiment, learn, and grow.”

  • From “Leadership is authority” → “Leadership is alignment and service.”

Change the story, and you change the outcome.

The Leadership ARC™ framework

Awareness, the foundation

Tagline: “See it to shift it.”

  • Neuroscience: Awareness activates pattern recognition and shifts leaders out of autopilot.

  • Narrative: Without naming their stories, leaders remain trapped in them.

  • CEO Question: What am I blind to that my team already sees?

Regulation, the lever

Tagline: “Pause to perform.”

  • Neuroscience: Regulation calms cortisol and reopens access to strategic thinking.

  • Narrative: Shifting from “react fast” to “pause, then choose.”

  • CEO Question: Do I lead my state, or does my state lead me?

Connection, the peak

Tagline: “Trust you can see.”

  • Neuroscience: Connection creates oxytocin and trust; leadership is mirrored.

  • Narrative: Connection is the story others tell about you when you are not in the room.

  • CEO Question: Do my people trust me because I say it, or because they see it?

“Connection is not soft power. It is the hardest currency in leadership. Without it, nothing sustains.” – Catherine Gallacher™

Case studies in action

Case study 1: The overloaded CEO, regulation gap

A CEO convinced, “If I don’t hold everything, it will collapse,” was trapped in fight-or-flight. ARC™ revealed a Regulation gap. Breath resets and nervous system tools helped them move from micromanagement to empowerment. Within 90 days, stress dropped and innovation soared.

Case study 2: The rising executive, awareness and connection

A brilliant strategist undermined by self-doubt was stuck in the story, “I’m not enough.” Through Awareness and Connection, they rewrote the narrative to, “My presence creates clarity.” Confidence grew, and within a year, they were promoted.

Case study 3: The home leader, misalignment beyond work

A senior leader who thrived at work unravelled at home. ARC™ revealed they had dropped Regulation and Connection outside the boardroom. By applying the same practices at home, the conflict shifted into a conversation, and trust was rebuilt.

Case study 4: Rebuilding connection at the top

A global COO noticed disengagement and rising turnover. ARC™ showed the missing link was Connection. By listening first, sharing authentic narratives, and aligning actions with promises, they rebuilt trust. Engagement rose and retention stabilised.

Hard truths from ARC™

  • “What you do not regulate, you will project. And your team will mirror it.”

  • “Awareness without action is theatre. Regulation without awareness is denial. Connection without alignment is manipulation.”

  • “Top performers design their ARC. Average performers leave it to chance.” - Catherine Gallacher™

The call to action

If you are serious about leading at the highest level, ARC™ is your edge. This is not theory; it is neuroscience and narrative design applied to real leadership.

And remember,

“Leadership by Design™ is not built in titles or tasks. It is built in your ARC™, Awareness, Regulation, Connection, the design that holds under pressure and sustains top performance.” – Catherine Gallacher™

A quick ARC™ exercise for leaders

Take ten minutes this week to walk through your own Leadership ARC™:

1. Awareness

  • Write down the three patterns you fall into under stress.

  • Circle the one your team already sees but you rarely admit.

2. Regulation

  • Before your next big meeting, pause for 90 seconds.

  • Take slow, deliberate breaths and ask: Am I walking in with clarity or chaos?

3. Connection

  • Ask one trusted colleague or team member: “What do you see me doing consistently that builds trust, and what do you see that erodes it?”

  • Do not defend. Just listen.

Keep your notes. This simple check-in is the beginning of designing your ARC™.

“ARC™ is not a framework you learn once. It is a practice you design every day.” – Catherine Gallacher™
