BURNOUT

Burnout can be caused by a state of chronic stress that leads to exhaustion, detachment, feelings of ineffectiveness.

How do I know if I am suffering from burnout?

Be aware of things like:

• Drinking or smoking too much

• Overeating – binge eating on junk

• Insomnia – constant broken sleep

• Palpitations

• Shaking, chills or hot flushes

• A tingling sensation in your arms or legs

• Unsettled stomach

You may also experience:

• Headaches

• Muscle tension or pain

• Dizziness

• High blood pressure

• Indigestion or heartburn

• Constipation or diarrhoea

• Hyperventilating

• Problems having sex

Other signs of burnout include:

• Feeling that every day is a bad day

• Consistently thinking negatively

• Feeling disinterest and unenthusiastic about your work

• Developing a short temper and snapping at minor things

• Wishing that you could disappear or quit

• Constantly procrastinating or self-sabotaging

• Feeling extreme hatred or resentment towards people

• Feeling isolated and like no one understands

• Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.

• Diminished pride in your work

• Losing sight of yourself and your goal

• Sense of failure and self-doubt

• Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated

Burnout often causes you to feel as if the entire world is against you. Everyone is unique, and burnout can affect us all in different ways.

Reassess your values and goals:

• What do you value in life?

• What main goals would you like to achieve within 12 months?

• Sometimes, your job doesn’t align with your long-term goals. So, look at what would make you feel aligned with your true purpose and values?

• What is in your control that you can change?

• What makes you happy and feel energised?

Create new habits:

• Exercise daily – start small with a walk and build up to what feels good

• Journal negative thoughts and assess true, false or don’t know

• Set boundaries for yourself – it can be hard to say no to a boss, family or friend but can be a necessity for mental wellbeing

• Take time out when needed – we can all be busy but unproductive. Timeout will get you re-energised and refocused

Recovering from burnout is going to take time. It does not happen overnight, but you can start today and focus on small things that make a big difference to regain control. Healthy habits, in regaining your sense of yourself and your wellbeing.

Ask for help when needed.
