You’re doing everything “right.” You eat healthy, work out, take supplements, and manage stress the best you can. And yet, you still feel off.

You’re tired but wired. Bloated, no matter what you eat. Your mood swings for no reason. You crave salt and caffeine, and can’t seem to relax even when you try.
If that sounds familiar, it might not be just stress. Your body might be stuck in survival mode.
What “survival mode” really means
Stress isn’t just a mental thing you can “meditate” away. It’s a full-body physiological state controlled by your nervous system.
Your nervous system has two key branches:
Sympathetic nervous system (SNS): Think “fight or flight.” It’s your body’s accelerator. Heart rate rises, digestion slows, cortisol spikes, and your body gets ready to react to danger.
Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS): Often called “rest and digest.” But when overstimulated by trauma, chronic stress, or overwhelm, it can flip into a freeze state, also known as parasympathetic shutdown. Heart rate drops, energy tanks, digestion slows even more, and you feel mentally stuck.
Both of these states, hyperaroused fight-or-flight and parasympathetic freeze, are survival modes, and either can keep your body from healing.
The catch? Most women I see are stuck in a freeze state. What that means:
Mentally feeling “stuck” is actually your nervous system being literally stuck. Your body is frozen in protection mode, and your mind can also feel trapped.
Energy is low, motivation is difficult, and healing interventions feel like they “don’t work.”
Common signs you’re stuck in survival mode
You might notice:
You wake up tired and go to bed wired.
You feel bloated, anxious, or constipated regularly.
You can’t tolerate stress like you used to.
You need caffeine to get going and wine to unwind.
You crave salt or sugar like your life depends on it.
You feel stuck mentally, like you can’t move forward no matter what you do.
If this resonates, your body is protecting you, but it needs help to come back to balance.
Why healthy habits aren’t enough
Even the best diet, workouts, or supplements won’t work if your nervous system is stuck in survival mode.
When your body doesn’t feel safe:
Nutrients aren’t absorbed properly.
Gut motility slows down.
Minerals and hormones can’t balance.
Inflammation lingers.
This is why so many women say, “I’m eating clean, sleeping more, and taking supplements, but I still feel awful.” Because your body doesn’t need more doing, it needs more safety.
How labs can help you know for sure
Functional lab testing can uncover whether your nervous system is truly stuck:
HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis): Reveals stress load, mineral patterns, and whether your nervous system is locked in protection.
DUTCH test (comprehensive hormone panel): Maps cortisol rhythms and sex hormone balance to show the physiological effects of survival mode.
GI-MAP or comprehensive stool analysis: Highlights gut inflammation and dysbiosis that can keep your nervous system on edge.
Bloodwork (CBC, CMP, thyroid panels): Identifies nutrient deficiencies and endocrine imbalances that affect stress resilience.
With these insights, you can build a strategic, personalized plan instead of guessing or following trends.
Why trendy supplements often fail
You may see people online raving about the “latest gut repair protocol” or “ultimate adrenal stack.” The truth? If your body is still in freeze or survival mode, it can’t absorb or utilize supplements effectively. Think of it like trying to charge a dead battery with a faulty charger. Nothing will stick until the foundation is restored.
How to help your body feel safe again
Restoration comes before optimization. Here’s where I suggest every woman start:
Rebuild your mineral foundation. Minerals regulate stress, energy, and digestion. Think of them as the battery pack for every system in your body.
Support drainage and gut flow. A sluggish gut traps toxins, keeps your nervous system on edge, and slows nutrient absorption.
Move and reset your nervous system. Somatic practices are key: gentle stretching, walking, dancing, laughing, singing, anything that reconnects you to your body signals safety to your brain.
Create a mindful rhythm.
Take unplugged walks.
Eat meals without screens.
Get morning sunlight with bare feet on the earth whenever possible.
Prioritize warmth, hydration, and consistency in daily routines.
Regulate your nervous system daily. Small practices like deep breathing, grounding, stretching, and even laughing or singing signal safety to your brain.
Healing isn’t about doing more. It’s about creating calm, consistency, and safety, which allows your body to finally absorb nutrients, balance hormones, and repair itself naturally.
The reframe: Your body isn’t fighting you, it’s protecting you
When women stop fighting their symptoms and start understanding them, everything shifts.
Your body isn’t slowing you down, it’s asking for safety, rhythm, and nourishment. Once you provide that, healing begins almost automatically, and any supplements, diets, or biohacks will finally work the way they were meant to because your body begins shifting into a state where it’s ready to receive.
If reading this resonated with you, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. I help women uncover whether their body is stuck in survival mode and create a personalized, strategic plan to restore balance, rebuild energy, and finally feel like themselves again.
If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and start feeling safe, nourished, and alive in your body, let’s work together. Your first step could be as simple as a discovery call to see what’s really going on under the surface. Fill out my interest application here to get in touch.
