You’ve set goals, made plans, and feel ambitious and full of potential. But somehow, you’re still stuck, trapped in cycles of procrastination, self-doubt, or fear that holds you back from achieving your goals. Why does this happen? The answer lies in your mind, and more specifically, in the deeper parts of your mind that you don’t even realize are running the show. Let’s break this down and talk about how you can finally take control.

Are you treating the symptoms instead of the cause?

Imagine you have a fever. Would you just take medicine to lower the fever, or would you treat the infection causing it? Of course, you’d fix the root problem of the infection. The same goes for your mind. When you procrastinate, feel stuck, or lose confidence, those are just symptoms. The real problem lies deeper in the unconscious patterns and emotions you’ve been carrying for years.

How your mind works

Your mind has three main levels, and each one plays an important role in shaping your behavior and decisions.

1. Conscious mind (5%)

This is where you think actively, set goals, and make decisions. It’s the part of your mind you’re aware of, the part saying, “I want to succeed,” or “I need to stop procrastinating.” However, it represents just 5% of the total power of your mind. This isn’t enough to create lasting change.

2. Subconscious mind (20-30%)

This is where your habits, beliefs, and experiences are stored. For example, when you drive a car without thinking about every step, that’s your subconscious mind at work. It’s like a storage space for everything you’ve learned and done repeatedly. It helps you do things automatically, like riding a bike or brushing your teeth.

3. Unconscious mind (60-70%)

It holds memories, emotions, and instincts, even the ones you don’t realize you have. Have you ever had a strong reaction to something without knowing why? That’s your unconscious mind at work. For instance, seeing an accident might remind you of something similar from years ago, even if you don’t consciously think about it.

(The exact percentages can vary depending on different psychological theories.)

Here’s the problem: while your conscious mind is busy setting goals, your subconscious and unconscious minds might be full of old fears, doubts, and negative beliefs. These deeper parts of your mind are far more powerful, and if they’re not on your side, they can hold you back no matter how hard you try.

The key to unlocking your potential

To achieve your goals, you must go beyond the surface and address the root causes in your subconscious and unconscious mind. Here’s how:

  • Heal past emotions: A lot of your fears, anger, and doubts come from things that happened in the past. Recognizing and letting go of those feelings can free you to move forward.

  • Change your beliefs: The beliefs you’ve carried for years, like “I’m not good enough” or “I’ll never succeed,” aren’t true. Replace them with beliefs that support you, like “I am capable” or “I deserve to achieve my goals.”

  • Practice mind-body tools: Techniques like mindfulness, visualization, and guided healing can help you access your subconscious and unconscious mind. These tools allow you to reprogram your mind and clear away the emotional “clutter” holding you back.

For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, your conscious mind may want to eat healthy, but if your subconscious believes food is comforting due to past experiences, you might struggle. By working with your subconscious, you can reframe that belief and replace it with a healthier mindset.

Take the first step toward change

It’s not your fault that you feel stuck. Your mind has been shaped by years of experiences, emotions, and beliefs, many of which are out of your conscious awareness. But you have the power to change. By understanding and working with your whole mind, you can break through the barriers that hold you back and achieve the life you want.

If needed, don’t hesitate to seek help. A therapist, coach, or counsellor can guide you through the process, helping you uncover the root causes of your struggles and reprogram limiting beliefs. Change takes time, but with the right tools and support, you can transform your mindset and unlock your full potential.
