We live in a society that often demands that we know who we are at a young age. We often ask children what they want to be when they grow up. We urge young adults to align with a path to have a high-paying career, a large home, and a nuclear family. Because of the social conditioning we all experience to be trained for different social roles and functions, people often experience periods of their lives where they feel lost and yearn to discover their “purpose.” This article will offer a reframe for the meaning of purpose and outline 3 spiritual tools you can use to help you unearth yours.

Redefining the meaning of purpose
When hearing the word “purpose,” it is common for us to think of a singular, grandiose thing or action that gives our lives profound meaning. However, thinking that purpose has to be something larger than life likely contributes to feelings of being lost and can inhibit us from seeing how much progress we are actually making on our path. I want to offer a reframe of thinking of purpose instead as a layered experience. Think of it like an onion. The base layer of your purpose is to experience, learn, and grow. From there, you continue to pull back layers and explore deeper parts of your purpose as you remove societal conditioning, explore your true self, and strengthen your connection to source energy. With this new understanding of purpose, you are never off track or on the wrong path.
Living with intention means you are constantly evolving. In the moments you feel lost in life, take time to reflect on where you have been and how far you have come. This assessment of your life will inform you of where you are going, even if you do not have all the details figured out just yet. There may be some life lessons you have to repeat or learn more deeply, but that is all right. As long as you take time to introspect and apply what you learn, every experience is there to teach you something, give you wisdom, and serve you in becoming the highest version of yourself. Your purpose is not merely something that you do; it is an extension of who you are at your core. Here are 3 spiritual tools you can use to gain some insight into the deeper layers of your purpose.
3 spiritual tools to gain insight into your purpose
1. Intuition
Everyone has intuition. Intuition is known as those gut feelings and moments of inner knowing, which are ultimately a channel connecting you to your higher self and divine consciousness. It is important to take private moments to listen to your intuition and work on strengthening your divine connection. You can do this by being present in nature or engaging in meditative practices to clear your energy and become more familiar with it. Paying attention to your energy levels and body language helps you assess the people, places, and things that you are drawn to and feel energized by. Often, practices that are connected to the deeper layers of our purpose are gifts that we naturally possess and do well in. It is the things that feel immersive to us and cause us to lose track of time when engaging in them.
Identifying your gifts is easiest when you are focused on your path and working to avoid comparing yourself to others. We all have gifts. Your gifts can be anything creative, performative, or instructional, such as cooking, creating art, singing, teaching, advocating, and more. There are no limitations. We must first acknowledge and honor our gifts ourselves so that we can share them with the world from the perspective of our highest selves. Reflect on your life experiences and use your wisdom and intuition to reveal your natural gifts and talents. Approach your gifts from a high vibrational perspective. If you feel called to share your gifts in a crowded domain or industry, then know that your unique voice and energy are needed. There may even be moments when people confirm your gifts because something about the action attached to your specific energetic signature is moving and inspiring when experienced.
2. Astrology
Astrology is the cosmic blueprint that shows the energy available to you. It is not fatalistic or doom and gloom. It is meant to be a spiritual tool used for guidance, but you are the master of your destiny, and you have free will. Your natal chart is a snapshot of all the luminary and planetary placements at the moment you were born. It reveals the universe that is contained within your vessel. It is important to look at your entire natal chart holistically. Still, your 10th house, midheaven, and north node placements are likely to give you some rich insights into some of the deeper layers of your purpose. Consider consulting an astrologer for a full chart reading if you would like.
The 10th house in astrology corresponds to the sign of Capricorn, and it represents the energy of one’s career, public image, and legacy. Similarly, your midheaven placement can help you understand what you strive for and may find fulfilling in a vocation or career. The midheaven is the highest point in a birth chart and is connected to themes of success, recognition, and long-term goals. Because the midheaven is on the cusp of the 10th house, both placements are often in the same astrological sign or one sign apart. Studying the sign and planet, if any, that is in your 10th house and the sign of your midheaven can help you realize some abilities and energies you have that you can share with the collective. Care Astrology has an article that gives more information about what the midheaven placement means in each zodiac sign.
Although the lunar north node is not a physical celestial body, it is a very important placement in your birth chart, especially for gaining insight into the deeper layers of your purpose. The north node in astrology represents the qualities, experiences, and energies that are available to help a person grow throughout their life to fulfill their soul mission. Studying the astrological sign and house that your north node is in can reveal amazing insights about who you are becoming throughout your entire life. The focus on growth over a lifetime reaffirms the base layer of purpose identified earlier, which is to learn, grow, and experience. Looking into your entire natal chart and how it all works together can be a helpful part of your path to self-discovery, which is often where we unearth some of the deepest layers of our purpose.
3. Numerology
Numerology is also an ancient spiritual tool that can be used to gather insights into the deeper layers of your purpose. Numerology is the study of the divine meanings of numbers and how their energies apply to our lives. Just as with astrology, you also have a numerology chart that is based on your name and date of birth. Your numerology chart represents energies that are available to you, but you are the master of your destiny, and you have free will. While it is important to study your numerology chart holistically, your life path number, soul urge number, and expression number are three placements that may provide profound insight into the deeper layers of your purpose. Consider working with a numerologist to get a better understanding of your entire chart.
Your life path number is calculated from your birthdate and reveals your innate talents, elements of your purpose, and obstacles you may have to overcome throughout your life. Numerologist Felicia Bender has a life path number calculator and a set of descriptions on her website. Similarly, your expression number, calculated from your full name, reveals your natural talents, skills, and potential as well as how you express yourself. The expression number is also known as the destiny number in numerology. Lastly, your soul urge number, also known as the heart’s desire number, is calculated using the vowels of your name. This represents the energy of one’s deepest desires, life ideals, and motivations. Your soul urge number can help you identify why certain actions or opportunities may not feel the most fulfilling for you. Numerologist Matt Beech has a soul urge calculator and a set of descriptions on his website.
